Knew you would lose it when they showed Phil and Mikkey, and when they showed Lemmy's picture, especially after half losing it when the Motorhead flag was shown. Perfectly acceptable. Seen a bunch of reactions to this, and you are not the only one to get choked up on this song. Love that Motorhead was included, Sabaton is a class act. The cello on the credits was played by Tina Guo, you've seen her play with the band before.

I never heard of this song before the cover came out, Motorhead was before my time. But it hit me pretty hard. My great-grandfather fought in WW1 with the Canadian battalions. He was injured in the Battle of the Somme. Spent at least 1 night in no man's land with shrapnel in his leg. He was lucky to come home. He then served again in WW2 watching for u boats in the harbour at Halifax. My grandfather went through the Netherlands in the second war. Even met his wife of 70 years in London. She was down from Edinburgh to help with the war effort. After they were married she was shipped to Canada while he went off to fight. He was D-Day + 13. Even though there is a lot going on in the world the last half decade I have had a great life so far. Every time I feel like things are not going my way I try and think of what my grandparents did so I can even have those thoughts.

"Oh look, they put a Motörhead flag in there", and I thought: "Dude, you have no idea what's coming..." I hadn't heard the original version before this, all I knew of Motörhead was "Ace of Spades", but this tribute is absolutely fantastic. And just as with No bullets Fly (anim. story) and Christmas Truce, it gets me everytime although I've seen them probably close to hundred times each. No need to apologize for the tears, we all get emotional with Sabaton's excellence in storytelling. Keep it up and greetings from Sweden! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

This was a very pure and kind reaction. And in fact, only a strong enough person can afford public emotional weakness, and I think all the fans of this channel respect your honest and genuine reaction DH. The song was great, and Sabaton gave a second wind to this Motorhead piece. There was another cool thing in this release, DH was wearing a T-shirt with the name of my favorite band, and this added emotional depth to the empathy. This reaction deserves 10.0, man.🤘

We should all be able to afford public emotional moments - not a weakness, as emotions are STRONG, thus strengths to have and experience - without shame. Songs like this and messages like this, remembrance of unimaginable loss and suffering and waste of lives SHOULD f**k us up if we actually think about them. Most Winter War themed things still f**k me up, because my family suffered personal losses there. Well, great gramps lost the dearest younger brother, his home, his livelihood, his horses, his land - everything. It's an honour to come from that, and to come from whatever family ties we each of us have.

Sabaton has a song titled "What's the Price of a Mile?" which asks the same question about how much a soldier's life is worth. I believe its about a later battle called Passendale, whereas 1916 is about the Somme, but does it really matter? I love this movie called "The Big Red One" by Samuel Fuller, who was a veteran of "The Big Red One" in World War 2. The best scene is when they crossed an old World War 1 battlefield; the Sergeant had served in WW1. One of the soldiers said, "They Already made a memorial for us." The Sergeant said, "It was for the last war." Another soldier said, "Funny had the names don't change." The Sergeant said, "They don't."

Sabaton just had a concert here in Finland. Friday, 19th of May, and I was there. First time I ever saw them live. Very first time. And I heard this one. Live. Cried in the stands. Almost the entire freaking arena sang along. It was so good that my first ever Sabaton merch item is the cover t-shirt... and I don't regret it. It'll be, for me, a nod to both Sabaton AND to Lemmy. Have NO shame and take NO flak for this reaction. Seeing you cry, too, it makes this song and this cover for me, and I'm betting so, so many others. If you don't cry? Shut yer trap, amirite?

Yeah, that was damn good. If I didn't know this was a cover, I wouldn't have guessed it, because it fits Sabaton like a glove. And even having never heard the song before, I was in tears just from the lyrics. So I can only imagine the added impact from the Motorhead memories. No apology needed for the emotions there. Also, I'm fine with you having a personal pick now and then, _because_ you do something like this only for particular reasons, not to jump on a bandwagon or boost some numbers.

A real man can cry. Thank you for being that real man. My grandfather was born in 1900. He enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He never spoke about his service. My father served in WWII and rarely spoke about it. After his death I learned he had served in Korea, too. He never spoke about it. I lost an uncle in WWII. I lost an uncle and numerous cousins to Viet Nam, PTSD, Afghanistan, and suicide. I broke down when I first heard this song. If we can’t cry about all the people lost in all the useless wars that did not end war, what should we cry about? Lest we forget.

My father made the same mistake in World War II! He was only sixteen when he volunteered for the German Army from a small mountain farm in Austria. When he was asked to do so, he stated that he was 18 years old (in 1941 not all people who came from remote regions had ID papers). It was brought to the Russian front in 1 1/2 years, was wounded twice and was captured in 1943 near Stalingrat. After 2 years as a prisoner of war and seriously ill, he came home. Throughout his life he regretted the decision he made at the time

When I saw your reaction to the flag I could tell how this was going to go. No need to apologise - I have cried to this version so many times already. It doesn't seem to hit any less hard on repeat viewings. And the value of a soldier? Apparently about half an inch. [I hope you'll forgive a mostly pasted comment for once, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw them perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

Sabaton don't joke around when they make their songs. They put amazing amount of thought behind their songs. I bet they have wanted to do this one for ages however unless they feel they can make it justice they dont release it. Just like Christmas Truce. They did not want to make that song unless they got it right. And with something like this, unless the remaining Motörhead members have an all clear i bet they would not made this.

I first heard 1916 by Motörhead a few weeks before this release on a German rock radio and I was impressed. Never thought Motörhead wrote such a great song back in 1991. And now Sabaton delivered this absolutely masterpiece as a trubite to Lemmy and Motörhead and to all soldiers of different ages. Heard this song more than 30 times now and it hits every time. The brilliant way of telling stories about what happened in the past and teaching history makes them my favourite band for years. No wonder that I have a lot of Sabaton patches and soon Motörhead patches on my battle vest. Sabaton made a powerful tribute to Motörhead and their great song 1916. They did more than just a tribute to Motörhead but a tribute to all fallen soldiers in history. All the different soldiers from different ages refer to specific Sabaton songs. The Lady coming out of the dark alley is one of the Night Witches. The convertible car refers to the car where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo which caused WWI. And at the end of the song was "The Old Pub" the B17 bomber from the song No bullets fly... >> Did you know that Sabaton received the "Enlightener of the Year Award 2022"? Sabaton is the "FIRST EVER ROCK BAND to receive this prestigious accolade!!"

on the day this was reliced i saw Sabaton on the first show of there European tour and in the middle of the show they play this. the song before everyone singing along same for the song after but for 1916 total silence throughout . the only time i have experanced that at a gig and in was incredibly powerful. on a side note the youngest soldier to be killed in WW1 was a britsh Solder killed in 1915 at age 15 the crazy part was he was only 13 when he signed up before WW1

Funny you would mention the "price of a mile", Sabaton has an original song called The price of a mile which is about that "how much are military gains worth in human lives"

Its refreshing to see a "reaction" channel doing an earnest reaction to something. The little bit of personal history you gave at the beginning was the cherry on top. Thank you sir.

I have watched many reactions to this song, over 15 and 75% ended in tears I have ended every watch in tears, what I also liked in the video is the reference of all the other soldier's matching with sabaton are character's from their other songs, example the woman who steps from the alley who looks up at the bombers is in a Russian uniform is from the song night witches, you had Sparta, you had the bomber from no bullets fly, with the red baron, and more. One thing I didn't know but the bus at the beginning had Hammersmith which someone pointed out was also a motorhead song,

When reading the credits, I read that each portrayal was in fact an actual soldier - most who did fight in 1916 (i.e. Sgt. Awal Nur served in the Indian Army regiment of 1914-18, Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides. He served in Belgium, France and East Africa from 1914 to 1917, and he was wounded three times.) or fought in other actions of WWI (i.e. Sgt. York and Sgt. Henry Johnson - both Medal of Honor Winners in WWI - Johnson served with the 15th New York "Colored" Infantry) or who fought in other wars. Another side note about Sgt. Johnson...."colored" U.S. soldiers in WWI were "brigaded" to the French Army because U.S. "White" soldiers did not think "they" could fight and racism ran very high within the ranks. By doing this Pershing fulfilled a pledge to supply combat regiments to the French, while also freeing “himself from the dilemma of how to use the African-American fighting regiments" (which is why you see the actor wearing a French Uniform in the video - kudos to the producers and their sense of authenticity and historical accuracy). Sorry - didn't mean to stray that far from what the video is truly about.

Oh damn, this was quite heartfelt for you mister, on two planes - the song itself and the perfect cross-over with Motorhead.

Hi David, my Dad added 2 years to his age during WWII. I think about all the boys that have done that and I'm with you with the tears! Do not be sorry, music is supposed to touch us and this song hits so hard. I must have tissues in hand every time I hear it.

I have been to the concert yesterday in Berlin. Great atmosphere, everyone with their lights on when they played 1916 and 10000 people singing along…

if anyone was gonna do this song justice it would be Sabboton. I love this version, I do think Motorhead's version is about a point or 2 higher imo. I think its the fact that its striped down and shows a tenderness in Lemmies voice that normally isn't there. again I do love this version and the fact that they included surviving members of Motorhead shows what class acts Sabboton are.

Had to come back to the vid rewatched again, 1916 was my first Motorhead album i bought on vinyl, even managed to learn just about every song on bass, I'm with you Dave, this has to be one of the best ballets Motorhead or any band for that matter has ever played.

Sham-Wow, for those moments when a tissue isn't good enough. Man. This song affects me every single time, but I also have a high empathy thing going on as well and so, no judgement. I was right there crying along with you. I could have used a Sham-Wow too.

David, you ofcourse know by yourselves, but just reassurinf you... tears are not allways a bad thing. I found that for myselves few years back with Nightwish, and since that i'm not afraid anymore to confess - im a crybaby (with a "right" song), too.

It wasn't courage that drove those boys. They didn't know what was waiting for them. Nobody knew beforehand because there had never been a war like that. WWI was the first modern war, modern weaponry, free use of nerve gas. Most of these boys thought they were going on an adventure, receive medals and be greeted as heroes.
