Take a drive on Interstate 95 between New London and Old Lyme to see what it's like to strictly obey the posted speed limit, even when everyone else is not.

Down in Florida, the speed limit on i95 is merely a suggestion, and most people treat the road name as the speed limit. Usually you can cruise through south Florida at 89 mph and still get passed by most fars

Well, since you asked (3 years ago), we need slower RELATIVE speeds, and strict enforcement of "Keep right, except to pass". The second suggestion will facilitate the first. Accidents are caused when the relative speed between two cars is high, such as a car merging too slow, or changing lanes abruptly WHILE MOVING SLOWER than the car that is already in the lane. I will admit to driving aggressively earlier in my life. I never got in an accident when I changed lanes because I was always accelerating away from other vehicles. This concept is lost on many Americans. They foolishly believe slower is somehow inherently safer, it is not. Car accidents kill far more kids than anything else. Yet we, as a society do not invest in driver education. Most adults are not aware of laws requiring motorists to "keep right, except to pass" or "Slower traffic to the right". I really do not like the "Slower" traffic statute, because slower is relative and people will interpret "slower" differently.

So correct you are we were taught in driving class that driving besides someone is just as dangerous or even more dangerous than driving that same Distance behind someone. (Tailgating) We were taught to pass all traffic with due caution because it's more dangerous to pass or to be speed matching next to someone then it is to be tailgating, because when you're tailgating you might be able to functionality apply your brakes, however when somebody changes lanes on you often have nowhere to go but Into another car.
@tacvolun3570
@tacvolun3570 Жыл бұрын
They settled that argument in driving school by wording it as "always travel faster than traffic to your right and slower than traffic you're left" & never impede faster traffic. The term gridlock does not come from stopped traffic but traffic all traveling at the same speed in different Lanes and the danger that causes with all traffic locked into that grid, no one having anywhere safe to go.

Speed limits are very important but not nearly as important as properly lane usage. If everyone obeyed the speed limit but no one obeyed proper lane usage, we're in much more danger than if everyone obeying proper lane usage but nobody obeyed the speed limit. The speed limit is very important but not nearly as important as most of the other safety laws that most people choose to ignore in favor of the speed limit making the roads avoidably more dangerous.

You'll never encounter anyone driving the speed limit if you're also driving the limit because you both will be fixed distances on the roadway. You will essentially only come up on slower moving vehicles and only be passed by faster moving vehicles. In my opinion, 50 and 55 mph is a slow "LIMIT" on an expressway and those roads could easily be 65 or 70 mph from the look of it. People forget that the limit is the maximum you may travel and that you're free to drive slower, especially if conditions like time of day or weather warrant it. Many expressways have a state-wide minimum of 45 mph to prevent hazards, however.

actually, you'd reduce the capacity of the road by the left lane. keep right except to pass is an idea that only favors the speed demons and will make merging hell. merging is clearly easier to do when there is less traffic in the right lane, which can only be true if people are free to use the left lane however they want. it would also make merging safer by the factor of every large vehicle choosing the left lane when the merge occurs. by increasing the capacity of a highway by the capacity of the left lane, you'd have fewer rush hours. usually, the left lane is added because when nobody is passing, traffic would be expected to use the other lanes
@josephcarson8382
@josephcarson8382 Жыл бұрын
@@vc8my traffic flow is beautiful indeed, I'm just proposing a different way that instead of favoring those who are speed demons, and making merging onto highways harder and less safe, utilizes the full capacity of the highway, which can reduce overcrowding on the road and make things smoother. not to mention, my proposed method increases compliance with the speed limit, and because of the increased amount of fast traffic, (the right lane is freed up for increased speeds with fewer people on it), slow drivers are more likely to get blown off the highway. if you can't drive the speed limit of a road or faster, you shouldn't be on that road, impeding traffic. we need minimum speed limits to force slowpokes off the highway. I believe that's the solution to highway traffic, not left lane laws

It's a freeway. It's meant for cars to go fast. So, we should raise the speed limit to whatever the physics says is just slow enough to safely negotiate turns and curves and to stop safely if necessary. And more strictly enforce rules against tailgating, cutting people off, weaving in and out of traffic, as well as the rule of "keep right except to pass".

The 55 zones on interstate highways in the northeast are a joke. Flow of traffic is usually low to mid 70s sometimes even 80s in big toll roads like the NJ turnpike, so I usually just keep up with the flow. My dad strictly keeps to 10 over when driving so he’ll do 65 in a 55 and still pretty much everyone passes him at a high rate of speed

That's because America is a joke. Speed limits are too low, yes, but the drivers are reckless swerving in and out of lanes all the time at 80mph+ with people using the slow lane as the fast lane & the fast lane as the slow lane. In the UK, you can get a fine if you're caught passing in the slow lane, it's strict enforcement of designated lane speeds.

Try following the 45 mph speed limit in a construction zone on the freeway and see how much traffic will back up, even if you set the cruise control to the speed limit. I remember the radar speed sign was showing someone doing 72 mph in a 45. I guess if you have a dash cam recording your speed showing you driving under the speed limit with traffic backed up behind you as well as other drivers raging at you and you were wrongfully ticketed for speeding, you could probably easily beat that ticket with the footage. I even have dash cam footage of me driving under the speed limit and there was a line of cars behind me.

The "keeping up with traffic" argument is nonsense and no state trooper will ever forgive a speeder going 20-30 over if they simply say everyone else was going that fast as well and that's why I was speeding. There is an interstate in West Virginia which *going down a mountain* is 55mph posted. People routinely hit 85-90 traveling that road and the West Virginia troopers vigorously patrol and give tickets every day, pulling people over for as little as 10 over.

Here is the problem. Common sense says to average out the speed of the flow of traffic so you're more smooth, therefore speeding would be the few idiots going even faster. During the last time I received a speeding ticket in a 55 zone, the officer actually told me "technically if I wasn't in the left lane he wouldn't have gotten me..." However, the problem is any officer at ANY time has a legal right to stop a vehicle for even traveling 1mph over. So.... you always have the rookies out there, or the officers who aren't going by common sense but strictly to the book. But think about this, lets say all those cars are doing 70mph. The speed limit is 55, ans you're doing 65. In the officers eyes, you really provably wouldnt draw any attention. But if you were swerving or distracted, he could stop you for speeding on top of that. Maybe they average out what most traffic is traveling at and catch those "few" suckers going even faster. Trust me, if everyone is doing 70 in a 55, you will have a few wanting to do 90. Also, lets say most traffic is at 70mph in a 55, and car A is tailgating car B, car A is far more likely to get the bust. (Please dont quote me on this, it's just my view of it.) We never truly know what is going on behind the scenes. If you're the only car with noone else around doing 70 in a 55, and that cop is on the shoulder, you will DEFINITELY get stopped. 78 when everyone else is doing 70...... oh yeah you're getting it, and for the full penalty of 23mph over.

Ok. The problem is that everyone is speeding in these highways let's just say the speed limit is 70, and the flow is going between 75 and 85mph, so what tells me is that even if they can put It up 80 or 85mph speed limit, the problem is people are always trying to go 10mph over and 15mph over. So if they put it faster like 80mph speed limit then the flow is going to moving 100mph+! Thats why speed limits are usually low even though it seems that could much more. If people were to drive on the speed limit or common sense that we could go a little over in some parts understandable, then we would have faster speed limits in America or anywhere. But I guess for now just keep in the 10mph over or less then you should be safe, or the flow. But always try not to follow that one guy that is going like 25 to 30+ mph over then your most likely to get pulled over.

The answer to get people to stop speeding as an entire group in reality i feel is this; pass a law creating hefty fines and have speed sensors (make them legal) every quarter mile and then enforce the law with ZERO compromise. Dont think that will happen. In southern california its not this bad, cops and highway patrol are fairly abundant. In el paso texas? Good luck going 61 in a 60 zone. No joke, go there and speed one mile over.... An unmarked cop will pull you over and you get a ticket FAST. Strange how its so different yet still in the same country. merica

The federal government threatened to pull Connecticut’s federal highway funding if they didn’t raise speed limits, they were so ridiculous low compared to the speed the highway was designed for. CT went through and raise the limit to 65mph across most interstates in the state so they didn’t lose funding. Speed limits should be set by engineers who designed the road to function a certain way, not legislators that wants to generate revenue with limits that don’t match the road design.

@TheCeilingFanCollectorHD or you could post the speed limit to match the speed engineers made the road for. *shrug*

That’s so unreasonable, I hope that never happens. First of all, most states have limitations on where speed cameras can be placed and 8 states outright ban speed cameras. Second of all, most local/state authorities don’t intend for speed limits to be taken in an absolute manner, even if speed limits are technically the “law”.
