Wharfedale Diamond 9 Speaker Failures
I find that my Wharfedale Diamond 9 speakers have failed prematurely.
I will do another video repairing these speakers once the required parts arrive.

Yes check with Wharfdale! This has to be a bad batch of speaker surrounds. Replacing those surrounds is not a job I enjoy, but the results are usually excellent if you get the right size and take care.

Clearly, the quality of materials, no matter the company, has lowered over the years. I have a set of HUGE tower speakers that I've had for over 30 years! These were very expensive at the time, around $3,000 for the 2 towers. They have 18" woofers (I think they are) and some mids and tweeters. Over 30 years and they are like new. Materials were much better 30 years ago. These speakers have been in use for the entire 30 years, used daily on our theater surround system. I've never felt the urge to replace them for "thinner" speaker towers or lighter ones and part of that reason, is due to lower quality parts.

run a bit of rubber cement around the edge and it might get them back up and running again. Don't expect a lot of movement at the edge as it on the outside anyway. worth a try.

You may be able to source replacement cones, particularly if it's a common problem. With bigger PA speakers, replacement cones are typically available.

i found out that for older vintage speakers those part do indeed fail after longer time. and they can be repaired / replaced. for your issue here, well i would suggest to consider the material, the glue, the relative humidity and any direct sunlight shining uv onto them as possible factors to eliminate. if you have to replace, it is well outside of warranty. and wharfdale are not exactly a premium brand. but regardless the repair should be fairly inexpnsive imho. and not too problematic but if you do want to get better speakers... i can recommend kali lp6s. got 4 of them here for quadraphonic audio. just its missing a centre channel is the only thing. (of course that does not necessarily need to be another lp6 - it could be something else instead)

I would be complaining to wharfdale, i've had my disco speakers since the early 80's, paper suspension, not a problem, i sold them a few years ago , they were Fane Crescendo 12"

Had Cervin Vegas do the same thing but between the cone and the gasket instead of gasket -> cage like yours. Must be some sort of stress point? Apart from being very annoying to look at (screaming orange) they felt and seemed ok too
@robbieaussievic
@robbieaussievic Жыл бұрын
..... Yeah, I was thinking they have 'pinched' the flex with the lock down frame. Compressed, thin, fatigue point creation by poor design. Would have been revealed with a prototype continuous stress test that wasn't done. Even if the material perishing with age wasn't factored in the test.

Parts Express here in the USA has speaker foam repair kits. I had a set of Infinity's from the 80's with foam rot on the woofers. Disappointing to see yours fall apart in such little time, they should (or I'd expect them to) last much longer.

Indeed, I expected much longer service life, especially as they are looked after, have never had high power levels out into them, and haven’t actually had that many usage hours, if they had been thrashed a bit of been used daily then maybe I would expect a failure at this age, but not with the way I have looked after them from new.

The older Wharfedale speakers lasted a heck of a lot longer than these new ones do. Today's build quality is nothing compared to yesterday's quality.

That is called "foam rot", they are not the first one. It isn't something magical from the 2000 or later., it started in the 90s. It is the type of rubber they have used, synthetic rubber instead of natural rubber. 'Normally' synthetic rubber turns into a messy goo but this is a very foamy construction (with air bubbles/compartments - gray looks instead of solid black) to make it more flexible, starts to fall apart when it degrades. Actually it is very thin and first starts to break at crucial points and after this it turns into flakes. How (fast) it develops depends on environment conditions. Is it a quality issue? I don't know because many brands have used it and have the same problem. Mostly used to increase the lower/bass response, improve sound quality. The speaker itself is still working and you can refoam it if you want.

I have several much cheaper and older speakers which also have rubber (not foam) surrounds and are still in perfect shape. This looks to me (as someone that actually works in the plastics industry) like a design flaw, the edge that separated was extremely thin, almost as though it was designed to fail, the rubber surrounds itself is still nice and flexible and soft, with no other signs of depolymerisation (plastic breakdown).

A well known problem with many of the nine series speakers, including my 9.5s. Just replace surrounds with more durable rubber ones, and Bob's you uncle. I made a KZbin video about it, if anyone is interested.

From the way it looks to me these failed because of a design flaw in the surrounds, where they were made way too thin.
