The leaves is a traditional leave which is used to drive away bad energy and evil spirits. The white markings signifies victory. In the olden days warriors where the people who were given those marks when they emerge victorious in a battle but now everybody can get when you achieve something or does something good. Also with the naming ceremony there’s a slight difference with how each tribe celebrates it and the tribe that performs the naming ceremony for you automatically you become part of that tribe therefore they give you a name which represents them.

In Ghana our native names are mostly based on our day of birth if you are male born on Tuesday ' Kobina', the number if you are first born the Akans either deside to add 'Piesie' also someone's role either your grandmother's name of someone who actually had a great influence or was of help to your parents they can also decide to give you that name for instance you can find a Monday born being called or referred to as 'Aba' which is a Thursday born for a fanti female. The outcome of your birth if it took long for your parents to give birth they can name you in a form of appreciation to God like 'Ayeyi' means praise 'Aseda' means thanks and same to all other situations. Also you can be given a king and queen reference as the Ga's did Nii and Naa and Akans we have the Nana for both sexes and Ohene for male and Ohemaaa for female. Akans do also add respects like mother like one referred to as 'Maa/ Maame' to a female and sister too. In addition to the male reference you can get Dad being added to a name like 'Paa/Papa/Papaa and brother all these can influence the name given to one as an akan and I believe same goes to other ethnic groups. I am given the respect of a mother and also a name of my grandmother which adds to my full name and I am from the fanti tribe of 🇬🇭 hence I know more of the Akan as I can relate to it. I believe some will agree. I love you guys, 💯 👌🏼 😍

When my kids were born, we had the Akan naming ceremony ( Kumasi) as that is where am from and it differs from this video which are the Ga’s from the capital city. Mostly you are named after someone in your family like ( after your grandma/pa, mum, etc)or who your family appreciated for helping in times of needs. I was born on Tuesday so am called Abenaa plus my nan’s traditional name as I was named after her but I just go by Maabena which is (Maa for mother if your translating to English and the Abenaa)

In most Ghanaian tribes children are named on the 8th day..I can not emphasise enough the significance that goes with naming a child. Not until the reincarnated child is given a name, he will continually remain a stranger to the family.

System of naming is more complicated among the Ga people. To understand our naming system depends on the traditional area within the Ga tribe. Names are given usually according to order of birth. The name will also depend on the tradional area in Ga tribe the person's parent's come from. That is why the names are different from Akan Day names.

@brakespearwoortman2528
@brakespearwoortman2528 Жыл бұрын
No not complicated. Actually exact and known so everyone can easily be identified to their family. With Akans you can,t tell which town they are from by their day name. Everyone knows where a Bortey is from, or a Atwerh is from with the Ga. You cant tell where a Kwesi Mensah is from. so the day names are really not identifiers. So in Ga we say no Ga person can be misidentified. If you bear a Ga name and you mention your full name, I can take you directly to your family home without asking another question, and i can tell which order of child you are. i.e. whether a first born son or eight daughter who came after twins.

Also during the process you’re given water and strong gin or alcohol. This symbolizes water and the liquor looks the same but when you taste it it looks different meaning speaking the truth and lieing looks and sounds the same to the one receiving it so you always have to speak the truth. Tye liquor signifies speaking the truth is hard and difficult but always say the truth to people.

If a Ghanaian family leave in America and has a child they do the same naming ceremony but it might differ from this but the purpose is the same. The rituals will depend on which tribe you come from. These are Ga people from the Greater Accra region. The names are very important, you can go back to your name and trace your ancestral home.

Yes indeed! Your children are entitled to the African names. We may be given the traditional names at birth or some days after being born or one month after, and most likely accompanied by modeste or elaborate ceremony depending on the immediate African culture from which the family emerged. 3. Naming ceremonies are highly spiritual rites. 3. Some Africans who subscribe to religions from parts of Asia or Europe follow naming ceremony protocols stipulated by these religions. 3. The naming ceremonies organized as part of the Right to Return rites are actually meant to restore permanently, all the rights of those who are reconnecting with the Motherland as of right. Therefore, Mr and Mrs. D. feel free to take your children along. Happy Naming Ceremony!

They are being given Ga names. However even within the Gas, there are differences on how children are named. In Ghana, naming ceremonies are for new borns and dependent on the ethnic group and lineage one comes from. My Dad was Nzema and my Mum Ga. Gas inherit patrilineally hence it was my Dad who named us and not Mum. He named us from his side of the family but I was the only one who my Mum wanted named from her side. Thus I was given my grandmother's name Sarah, Adwoa added for the day I was born and Mansa because I was the 3rd girl born to my Dad.

The powerful aspect of the naming is that,its integrate you to your core , and the dancing they relates you to the times you were not there with them,the childhood plays and dances,it wont make sense until they explain it further,the leafs on their neck is not just what you see,thats one of the powerful leafs for which kings and queens uses to protect themselves from their foe,anyone can say anything but those leaf represent protection from the past and future foes.

I can imagine for these people the significance of this ceremony. It must be very emptional. This is so beautiful, symbolic and deep. I am happy for our brothers and sisters who reconnected to their people and received their tradional names. It's very important, it's identity. I celebrate with them. Yes kids can participate and be given their own names. Gabrielle Union's daughter got her Ghanaian name last year.

Yes. Kids are given the names too. The video you are showing is performed by the GAS. The Akans and others tribes have different naming ceremonies. However, it amounts to the same. Sometimes parents name their children the day they were born for example Friday born is Kofi for a boy and Afua for a girl, A Thursday day born is Yaw for a boy and Yaa for a girl. In addition, a third born child is named Mensah for a boy and Mansa for a girl Note that every name has meaning. My name Asiedu is an Akan bane meaning broad base - foundation with wide range

Hello Guys , So today I decided to put my two cents by way of comments as regards this video. The video you saw or watched is to do with one of the tribes in Ghana who are mainly located in the capital of Ghana which is Accra. Is a different story when one move to Ashanti and Kwawu in the Eastern region. In other words the ritual ceremony is vastly different from those of the GAS LOCATED IN ACCRA CAPITAL. TAKE NOTE though that naming ceremonies in Accra maybe different though closer OR SIMILAR TO the FANTE TRIBES. The reason being that both Fantes and Ashantes are what is described as THE AKAN CLAN. Unless it is an inter-marriage , people from Accra cannot speak either Twi or Fante though a Fante man can do that from growing up. I mean a FANTE man could speak both Twi and GA fluently though cannot say the same for both tribes of Ashanti and GA unless things have changed though I strongly doubt it. Finally, take note Twi is most widely spoken and as a population made up of 45 percent of Ghana's census where Fantes make up the third most widely spoken language in Ghana. Just so you know I am proud of Fante with knowledge of the history of Ghana though currently living in London for well over 30 years. Happy to engage with you guys on What's app for free whereby I could fill you in or bring you guys up to speed on matters to do with African history in general and Ghana in particular. Let me know?
