I've worked in the electroplating equipment business for 40 yrs. Steel gets plated with copper 1st because it it sticks to steel, followed by nickel the chrome. Most people don't know is the silver color is the nickel. Chrome is actually clear and added over the nickel so it doesn't tarnish (turn green).

When I started in Aviation as a mechanic, we were not allowed to use chrome tools. They were more likely to flake off and get into the engine or whatever. We had to buy black oxide or nickel plated tools. Chrome vanadium was not always a mark of quality. Japanese tools were pretty good, tools made in Taiwan, Vietnam were the China of the day. I don't like chrome, it is too slick when sweaty or oily. I am not buying new tools. I don't do it for a living anymore. I am retired. But I hope the young guys do take your video to heart.

I am a blind guy who likes to do DIY projects, so for me, I cannot really see the tool other than if it is shiny. However, I would have absolutely no problem with the tools finished like the Tekkton wrenches you were talking about. I agree with you that the slightly pebbly surface would give a better grip. I have a really nice chromed cobalt set, And those ratchets are a bit slippery if your hands get damp, so for me, the mat finish would be no problem. I do not care whether it is a matte finish, or a polished chrome finish, at the end of the day, it is the tool that gets the job done, and not it’s finish.

My problem is American made tools are globally sourced. There was a tool if I remember with that USA made with global materials and the only US made product was the plastic molding and not the steel component. American Steel company are too busy screwing everyone else over rather than streamlining their products and innovating. I'll say it now. China's Steel manufacturing is far superior to our Industry despite the Chinesium poor steel stereotype. We buy raw steel product from them all the time and always certain steel suppliers will always pump out quality graded steel. The perpetrators are American Company buying cheap steel to use as their product. Don't blame the Supplier, blame the Corporations/ Governement for skimping on quality. I Always, Always will buy steel from Taiwan, Germany, or Japan nowadays because they're far more superior in quality and finish. Rarely do I find modern tool made with American steel, and usually they're niche or extremely expensive. It's sad but true and a lot of folks can't swallow that pill. Sorry for the rant... I use to work in the Steel Mill Industry.

Non-electrode nickel was used almost exclusively over 100 years ago, and our version was known as the Watts nickel process. That process was preferred over electrode nickel for machinery that had necessary tolerances since it would deposit the coating evenly as opposed to the electrode process where the plating was affected by magnetic fields causing more nickel here and less there. The Watts process produced a dull nickel finish. The electrode process produces a bright finish which was popular in polished finishes. Before chromium plating became possible, the auto industry produced its polished bumpers, mirrors, etc. in nickel. The problem with nickel is that it is not as resistant to oxidation that causes polished surfaces to 'fog' requiring polishing infrequently. Chromium is more resistant to oxidation maintaining its bright appearance. There is a slight color difference in the plating color when compared side-by-side. Nickel going to yellow, chrome going to blue. The process for plating a 1960s auto bumper would be to coat the steel with a thick deposit of copper, then a thinner deposit of nickel, and, finally, a 'flash' coating of chrome. What's important to you?

Always been a fan of an industrial finish like Proto, Blackhawk and some Williams stuff. Old Craftsman shot-peened finish was great for grip, too. Anyone who's ever had a bad chrome plating shatter and leave chrome splinters in your hand would likely jump at the opportunity to have an equal-quality tool in a more industrial finish, especially when they are often cheaper (compare Proto to Snap-On, for instance).

I don't have any of the wrenches that are black. But they'd be alright too. At some point there's a diminishing rate of return where "features" add more cost while offering little "benefits" in return. I try to find value when I buy durable goods. Bottom line, chrome adds very little for the added cost on professional quality wrench sets.

I have a few old school open end wrenches and adjustable wrenches that are black or near black, just like impact sockets, and the main downside of the dark finish is they are harder to see. Most of my tools are shiny chromed because the what's been readily available for decades, not because it was a particular choice. If high quality hand tools at an reasonable price needed to be purple or pink, I would buy them even if it's not my first choice in color.

I prefer tools that don't have a polished finish mostly because they grip better. A more industrial look also makes me feel better when using the tool because its design is focused on helping with the job, not on looking pretty in a drawer. Not that tools can't do both, or that there's anything wrong with tools looking good. I just think that in a world where 98% of tools on the market have that shiny aesthetic, it kinda gets cheapened, and it leaves a gap in the market for tools with a more serious design focus.

I'm like you and prefer the brushed or shot peened finish over chrome. Yes chrome is a little easier to clean, but it's also super slick and I find I get a better grip on my old non-chrome Craftsman wrenches than I do my chromed Snap-on wrenches. And for the ADHD and OCD types out there, with the natural finish you won't have to worry about that dreaded day ever coming when you find a scratch on your shiny polished chromed wrenches or if/when the chrome starts flaking off. Regarding Tekton, I just wish they made it easier to discern which of their wrench sets are U.S. made and which are made overseas w/o having to click on each set. Maybe suggest to them to add a filter option to the left column of their website with a Made in USA option.

Upper management and the boards of directors are compensated 10 to 100 times more than the people doing the work and are rewarded for eliminating jobs and moving USA jobs to foreign, cheap labor markets. The chrome looks nice but my dull finish, 60 year old Barcalo wrenches work just as well as my newer, shinier stuff.

Same as danroll - I like the matte look just fine and if it's good for jobs AND the environment, well, sign me up.

It's kinda like the old saying - 'don't let perfect be the enemy of good'. Brushed or knurled finishes are usually better than chrome. It's just the outer appearance that's different.

Definitely will agree that chrome is not needed. I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and my hands constantly cover in various fluids at work and chrome is very slippery in that senecio

Hydraulic fluid on your chrome wrench? May as well be trying to hold a fresh fish with Dawn coated hands.

@The Den of Tools Is there a comprehensive list of manufacturers that currently make non chrome or matte finish hand tools?

I certainly don't have to have chrome but I do like the way they look. If it can be made in the USA, I'm fine with no chrome.

I worked on heavy equipment back in the 80s. The last thing I wanted was a slick chrome wrench while I was laying under a greasy back hoe covered in hydraulic fluid . Tool snobs are weird.

I purchased a par x wrench about 45 years ago it was made by snap on just did not have the fancy finish. Like the way chrome looks but if it is going to bring good paying jobs back to the USA 🇺🇸 I will take the plane finish.

Almost all of my sockets and ratchets are black oxide Proto. Wrenches are all dull nickel. I just always liked it that way.

I still have my grandfather's socket set. No chrome and still as good today as when he bought them. The only problem I have is no metric sizes.

Your German hand tools such as Hazet, Gedore and Stahlwille utilize that satin finish. So do a lot of Japanese tools such as Koken. I have no problem with that finish. Also too fun fact, during ww2 US hand tools were either coated with black oxide, hot blued or had a parkerized finish. Chromium went to the war effort. Chromium went into lining chambers and barrels of ww2 freedom seed dispensers. In today's world we have other forms of coating IE cerecoate, duracoat or powder coat. I think a metallic ceracoated hand tool would look sharp. Plus there are nitrate and titanium nitrate coating. I think chrome is a thing of the past. I feel you will get a superior finish with a nitrate coated hand tool. They have been using various coatings in freedom seed dispensers and defense applications for years. In some applications replacing chrome altogether. Why not apply said technologies into hand tools? Said coatings fall well within EPA requirements as far as having an environmental footprint and producing waste.

being a machinist that works in with cutting oil I prefer my tools to not be chrome. Chrome tools are much more slippery when your hands and the tools are coated in oil

I’m a millennial DIY type and I don’t care at all for made in USA or elsewhere, but also the shiny chrome finish isn’t a selling point for me. I would gladly buy the matte/satin finish, or even a black oxide or blued finish
