Rise Review - Tracks on Tracks on Tracks

I'm working on a game design right now where players are figuring out the best songs to listen to while they take railroad trips to various decathalon meets around the country. It will have one track for the players to choose tracks, another track for the players to build tracks, and a third track for the track meets. I'm calling it "Brussels".

Yes! Enjoyed this with my buddy Scott in a 2P format over the past two days. One very easy house rule to help bookkeep the double or triple track movements is to acquire currency from the game and just return it back to the pile once you have satisfied your movements For example, if you move 3 spaces on science, just borrow $3 from the bank. then for each $1 you return, you can perform all the bookkeeping for that single movement on the science track

Played it at 4. It was good for 6 rounds, after that it became a real bore and it becale just getting pointd. Everyone was at the end of each track, so those who had the best books, could score easier - run away leader game.

Seems like there are too many better “tracks” game out there right now for this to be worth it. Khora, Tapestry and others will give you a similar feel with a better table presence.

There are plenty of games that have tracks for sure, which is why I went into this knowing I like tracks :) I would say Rise feels more "purely" just tracks. It feels almost like it was a design exercise, and that sets it apart in my mind. The cards in the game are only used to make a variable track, whereas in Korah and Tapestry there are card, dice and board elements that are in addition to the tracks. Those additional elements do add great depth and interaction to the games, but I also appreciate Rise's commitment to trying something uniquely specific.

Cool review. I would like to hear a comparison to Khora, which is also a game of tracks. I played Khora only once, but thought it was very good.

I very much enjoyed Korah, but the secret dice selection and the way the tracks interact make the core of both games feel quite different to me.

So basically a uglier version of Andromeda‘s Edge…that too is/was just tracks. They didn’t even try to hide it.
