I just loved Rising Sun. The game has amazing replay ability . The amount of choices and variation of strategy and the engagement between players and the cards play really well. For me is on the same level of Blood Rage. CAn't decide which one I like better. I agree, 4 is the sweet spot for this game.

I would contend that the models, in all their gory glory, drew in more buyers than it turned away. So to say he is limiting his customer base is likely the exact opposite of reality. I think Eric takes older ideas and refreshes them really well. Sometimes it is his own ideas... like Midgard to Blood Rage...... and this time I think we have a fusion of Senji with Shogun/Samurai Swords/Ikusa. The whole money behind the screen, and hiring the Ronin, just really reminds me of that game. And it even came with cool Koku, and castles for the map where fortresses were.

finally got my copy in and it is fantastic. Everything that you do matters and very little down time. War may take a few minutes more, depending greatly on the player, but most it should last is 10-15 minutes per war phase. This game, the first time you play will have a long first round, spring season, but after that everyone will know exactly what to do.

The thing I'm afraid of is playing with either 3 or 5 when someone might always feel left out of the "tea ceremony". Cause I imagine it CAN happen for someone to be "forever alone" in a playthrough. Is it possible to win completely without allies?
@ccggenius7 жыл бұрын
There ARE benefits to not being allied. Ex. you can't get screwed by the betray action; additionally, combat is the primary means of scoring victory points, and you only battle if provinces have enemy units in them. There's a pretty real points cost paid for that extra action from allying. Also, losing armies in a battle get paid a gold from the victor for each unit lost, so it's not like getting beat down for a while is a hopeless situation. TLDR: Maybe, going to take many play-throughs to know for sure.

18:27 I guess there are two approaches to balancing a game's factions, and the way that Tom and Sam are talking about here is more common, I think. The other approach that works quite well is one where every time you play *every* player feels like all the other players have amazing, overpowered factions. If every player feels like all the other players are overpowered then you're doing something right. >:) Duel of Ages 2 is like that, and I've played plenty of Cosmic Encounter sessions that were like that.

You know, calling this a successor to Blood Rage isn't a bad thing. I think trying to point out that it's not a successor is an error. So much of this game is Blood Rage 2.0 and if I were to list all the things mentioned in this video to my gamers, they'd say it sounds like Blood Rage without hesitation. Again, not a bad thing. I realize they don't want to call it Blood Rage 2.0 because there are other elements in the game and they want it to stand on its own, but it's like saying Eldritch Horror isn't a successor to Arkham Horror when it obviously has ties to the other game. There's card drafting, there's area control where you get different bonuses depending on which area you control, there's bonuses for losing battles, there's monsters that you can acquire on your team, there are different cards available for different ages, and the list goes on. To just say that the miniature quality and the Loki strategy aspect is all it has in common with Blood Rage is a joke. I love Blood Rage and I'm sure this one is good too, but I wish Zee was in this review to balance Sam's unwavering opinion. Zee just seems to have a better way of getting his thoughts across and is able to make counterpoints to the others' comments that allows for me to get a better perspective of these games. Thanks for the review.

So I just played my first game and it was awesome. I have 1 question in regards to the Lotus Clan. LOTUS gets to select whatever Mandate they wish. Early in the game, LOTUS picked me(I was the player to his left in turn order) twice in a row as an ally. So for 2 rounds we were unchallenged in our ability to first MARSHALL (we each built Strongholds) and then RECRUIT. After the second season we ran away with the game. As the Turtle clan I was putting out 6 models during recruit and neither of the other 2 clans were even close. Im not criticizing the game at all. Its awesome. I just wonder how you slow down the runaway leader problem that may exist when the LOTUS Player can pick the player to his left and get 2 back to back Prime Mandates unopposed... Im afraid that with his ability to go first (Honor track) and his ability to pick any ability PLUS being able to bury Mandates he doesn't want to come out could be a serious balancing issue.

Blood Rage demoted to ONE OF Sam's favorite games of all time? #1 TI4, #2 Blood Rage, #3 TI3? :)
@thediceodyssey46907 жыл бұрын
I just noticed he had said that as well. The last time I can remember him doing this is when he was messing with us about his new number 1 game last year. If that's the case, then that's a quick toss up again within a year's time. Blood Rage knocked off another game for me earlier this year to become my number 1, and I have yet to play another one that has toppled it yet for my personal tastes. I thought Terraforming Mars had a chance...but alas, tis not the case.
@cthulwho81977 жыл бұрын
The Dice Odyssey Tom just "told off" Eric for putting the same game on his Top 100 twice (two Merhants of Venus from different publishers). So I don't think Sam would get away with that. 😁

The only negotiation I like in a game is Cosmic Encounter but I don't know how I feel about it here. I like Blood Rage since it's quite streamlined, but this feels like it has more "fiddly-ness" with the negotiation and battle phase. I feel the great plastic may inhibit one's opinions about the game. I loved Blood Rage, but it is slightly over-rated, and without those mini's do you think it would rank as high? Hmm I don't know on this one. I'm not bashing the game, but I know Sam and Tom are huge Lang fans, so their appreciation of the game has to be taken with a grain of salt. I'll have to watch some other reviews on this before pulling the trigger. I would just go with Lords of Hellas, but I hate what they did by making everything KS exclusive. I'm not hunting crap down for a board game(CMON is bad with that garbage too)

The reason is they're using coloured bases for a different purpose which is to identify your shintos. This lets you distinguish your faction and shintos at a glance rather than relying on sculpts, which is even more difficult when sculpts per faction are different.

Or, assuming it is released Jan-Mar 2018 as expected, will it count as a 2018 game? I can’t help but feel that if they put it in a “Top 10 Games of 2017” list they are going to wind up a lot of KS backers. 😤

I just think alliance games are a strange breed as you know that only one of you is going to win so somebody has to screw the other person at some point before the game ends so you aren't really in an alliance, you're just teaming up on other players and then turning on your 'alliance' partner afterward. Doesn't sound fun to me. Now, if both alliance members can actually win together such as in Fief: France 1429, that's different.

Played this yesterday with 6 players. Result: I was bored as hell. The game looks beautiful, yes. The monster and season cards all have their cool or mildly interesting features, but honestly when it was not my turn I felt my self dozing off LOL. Even in the war phase (the meat and potatoes here), it was meh to me. Also, the negotiation was not that important honestly, specially when people can betray one another. Like, we were all expecting it to happen so when it did, it did not change anything really, because people planned ahead for it individually.

these eric lang games are such a rippoff why not do a economy version of the game without tose minis?i like the sentinel tactics model wehn you really like the game you can buy those expensive minis. no choice for you as a consumer.thats bad.

Normally I would totally agree, as a lot of games are pricing me out of the market. However, when it comes to area control games, for some reason I like the minis being a part of the presentation of the game. I think it brings the focus of the game on the units ans monsters and helps create the proper environment.

Because it takes away from the theme of the game. Also as far as I know CMON hasn't released a MRSP for the basegame.

you pay for a premium product. That's why.

The minis really bring a fun bit of flare to the game that you can't get any other way. I really enjoy the opportunity to paint them up.

YOU may not want minis MANY do. Rip off is the wrong word completely. We get it you want a 25 dollar version of this game. That's not really their problem. They decided on the product they wanted to make, they made it, you don't wanna buy it, they knew you wouldn't anyway

I think you did a bad job of explaining the game. I usually like Toms reviews but he ran through this and I wasn't following.
