For the setup maybe a little page/booklet showing balanced setups so you can just use one of these and just jump straight in.

I wouldn´t call "setup" 100% to the first phase. It has some strategy in it. It is setup *but* you can also win or lose because of epic fails during preparing your positions.

I agree. It's just the first phase of gameplay.

thank you SO much for reviewing older games... :)

Zee i think there is no "setup time". Placing the discs on board is not random. Players actually strategically choose where to place their pieces, which in turn will benefit their movement and control of board.

This review made me want oreos for some reason.

You mention that same complaint in a top ten which had this game. Do you not consider the strategy in the set up as a part of the game? I think dropping the label of "game setup" and just viewing it as a "first phase" of the game might make that more palatable.

I agree that it is part of the game, but it feels like setting up to play the game proper. It simply isn't as engaging.

Nice review. I agree the pieces are very nice and pleasing to look at and use. I don't like the flimsy cardboard board at all. I've been meaning to make my own board out of wood to use with the game's pieces and I haven't gotten around to it. One of these days I'd still like to do that. I also agree the setup phase is long and among many inexperienced (and experienced) players can skip this phase, by simply starting with a random setup. Ideally the rules could mention this, as an alternative way to start, and provide the players with a balanced and fair random setup to start the game.

What a coincidence, just ordered this a couple of days ago along with GIPF and ZERTZ after I had a chance to try YINSH. Sadly that one (as well as TZAAR and PUNKT) weren't available.

I got all of them years ago before I knew they'd become so popular. I like Tzaar the most!

Maybe you already said it, but what triggers the end of the game? Only one black pile and one white pile left?

So, you said "skip over" empty spaces...? Do they still count as a space?
