Lets take under consideration that Tzolkin is 2012 game and Teotihuacan 2018. After 8 years nothing similar poped up (maybe it does but haven't seen any) with a gear mechanic and the game still remains so good makes the game a big hit. But it's a game where mistakes are not forgiven. On the other hand in Teotihuacan it's easier to forgive mistakes, it's a more modern game with the usual action we see in many games taking 1-3 steps to do an action you like. The pyramid in the center is unique. Both games are thematically great. But Tzolkin in my opinion is much better and one of my favs.

I love Tzolkin! But I agree, it is very Competitive and Unforgiving. A Single mistake can rear its head over and over again. But the artwork and mechanics still make the game enjoyable even if you find yourself behind early.

In case anyone missed him saying it: the cogs don’t come out of the box looking that way. Those are Drakenized.

I bet you Tzolkin will still be played in 5 years, and it's been out longer still. Teotihuacan is a great game but I wonder how circulated it's going to be in another 5 years

I love Teotihuacan. I have bought this recently and then bought the expansion a couple of weeks later. I think it’s just me, but I understood Teo more than Tzolkin. I’m trying to watch more playthroughs to get more of the feel. As I have been keen on getting both Tzolkin and Tekhenu as well.

Two great games, and I'm not sure which one I prefer if you are just talking about the base game. However, if you include the expansions, I prefer Tzolk'in. Although I have just played the first of the Teotihuacan expansions.

For me Tzolkin seems more interesting and frankly more palatable. Still, both sem kinda dry and a tad overly complex. Is there an Euro game with a stronger theme and more streamlined gameplay?

I actually watched this video because Tzolkin was mentioned in a review of Fromage, a KS with a rotating board. The cheese theme is strong, and it seems to be more streamlined. The KS is actually very affordable compared to the usual pricing nowadays as well.

Hands down, better art on Tzolkin. It looks more natural to me - the muted colors and the squares all over the Teotihuacan board does not look good or in any way realistic to me.

A shame. I would have raced out and bought the game based on the amazing board itself. I was disappointed when I saw how the cogs really looked. Amazing job!!

11:14 I like games where each choice matters but, this sounds like too much for me. I don't like early mistakes causing the rest of the game to be pointless. The last game I heard that does this was Food Chain Magnate. Tzolk'in may not be that bad but, this does make me leery.

In my experience, in Tzolk'in it's mostly a matter of making timing mistakes that can have consequences for the rest of the game. Yes, that's harsh. But I feel it's mostly a problem when you're learning the game. Once you've played it a couple of times, that will become much less of an issue. In contrast, I think in Food Chain Magnet it's mostly the other players that can mess up your plans if you're not constantly vigilant. And I suspect that will always be a danger, because your opponents will be constantly on the lookout for those opportunities.

I like them both but Teotihucan is the better game to me. I also like Trismegistus more than TZOLK'IN. I agree with you that the last one is very punishing and one mistake or doing something in the wrong order might mess up your game.
