In the example, could player two not put the 3 gravel in player one's bag? That would limit the first-player advantage somewhat.

Yea that was my immediate though. There is an obvious built-in catch-up mechanic, so getting in the lead would more likely be a detriment

Tom Vasel is my first (and generally last) stop for game reviews. And it doesn't surprise me that he doesn't like this game. But we've found this game extremely fun. The odds of winning first time is, for all statistical calculations, zero. And if the first player gets 3 gold, then every other player will be throwing gravel in his bag. It's not a deep strategy game but fits in the category of 'social games', 'frantic and fun games' and 'games you can play in any company'. I'm always on the lookout for games that will attract EVERYONE - and this is it. But, as someone else mentioned, its not Terraforming Mars. But its a must have.

What was Buonocore thinking, when he decided to bring this to the Stronghold library? He has amazing games like Terraforming Mars and Great Western Trail and then he adds this?

Nah this game is decent, it’s just being inadvertently compared to much more in depth and adult games. It’s simple and it works for what it is. This is like a Michelin star food critic leaving a bad review for a bag of haribo.

Well, its interesting idea, could be more fun to add extras to the game. Draw blindfolded, and decide without looking am I stop or not. Or swap bags, stuff each oder bags with black and grey, than swap again... anything really what makes more interesting....

I totally disagree. This is a superb game for 4-5 year olds. Lots of suspense from a simple concept. I agree that the ruby option doesn't work optimally, but the emerald option works well. If you are going on holiday and there is a 4-5 year old in the gang you will earn a lot of points with both the child and parents for having brought this game along.

How can a designer think "this is a good game"? or even can he/she not be afraid of losing his/her face...?

Stronghold Games is now advertising this game with "#TomVaselDoesntLikeFun" on BGG... soon as I saw it I knew this game would be a "no" for me! Tom's recommendations have been extremely solid for years, no clue why they thought calling attention to a bad review by one of the most esteemed critics in tabletop gaming would be an effective marketing strategy 😆

This is not a game for adults :) It's great with the 4 to 8 year old crowd, though.

It's not horrible at all and could work well with younger kids.
