We used a D10 on the seperate card discard piles to denote how many blank cards already got pulled. Makes the mental load so much easier. Also, you can choose to roll dice AND pull cards on the same test, it's in the rules.

I think the cards vs dice system is great. You can switch it up if you want and if you want you can remember all the drawn cards but you don't have to. It's just there to mitigate the luck factor you have with dice. And you can even take cards and roll dice for the same check if you really wanted.

I hated the size of this game so much that I almost parted with it…instead I got into minis painting the last year and it changed my feelings on this game completely. Started playing it solo and painting while I’m going through the campaign. The boxes are still obnoxious but man, this game is a beautiful production and with super fun combat . 6 chapters in and I realize there’s huge strategy in combining both dice and card in the same attack resolution. For example, when you know there are many blanks left in a deck you can mix dice and maybe 1-2 cards to draw out the blanks. Once you know the blanks are in the minority or are gone from the deck, you save the deck for when you know you want a big attack. This is my preferred way of playing and that’s how you mitigate that!!!

If dices and cards are use for completely different things then it’s a fair point of criticism. But since both can be use interchangeably, I never found an issue with it.

they recommend cards for the monsters. The encounters were balanced around cards. We use a mix mainly cards until the deck becomes a risk and we don't want to use an action to reshuffle.

You can use your companion to refresh the might decks instead of your full characters playing cards. If I recall it is the +2 animus and battleflow tokens that allow it, and companions cant use those. The blanks dont matter for the enemy cards (same as criticals), because they never miss, so the only reason to track those is to gues how many higher nunbers are left in the deck. All discard piles are public knowledge so you can use dice to track remaining blanks if you want. I play this with my wife and she is all about the dice. Myself, I always add a card or two just for variety. It doesnt feel like it takes a load of additional time to draw a card. I get why the developers have done both - some people just want to chuck a fistful of dice, some people want to count cards and plan everything; and this caters for both and everyone inbetween. P.S - enjoy chapter 4......

Oh blanks do matter for enemies too, you can guess how strong the next attack will be. And some of the bosses in later chapters hit pretty strong 🥲

Man, this game is just soooooo good. If you're not on board with it by the third scenario, just go ahead and sell it and also maybe check to see if you're a little dead inside too 😛

We play it two player, my wife and I (one player and one companion each). I use only cards and my wife only use dice, and that function great for us both 😊 I guess the mental load whit the cards ain’t there when only one player use them?

I hate dice… if you want someone unlucky that will gurantee a bad roll give them to me. Saying that in Jaws of the lion it’s amazing how many time the monster deck has the x2

Sounds like a boardgame that should have been a video game (setup times, space requirement).

Could say that for a lot of things. But physical interaction with others and components are reasons why most board games are board games.

Setup time for this one is pretty short, you can do the story in 5 minutes and encounter maybe in 10.

Yeah it isn't bad. This is the first mega campaign game that my friends and I actually played all the way to completion. Absolutely worthwhile, an amazing experience.
