I’d never heard William F Buckley say he disagrees with civil disobedience before. Obviously, I’m no Buckley scholar, but I know he was a conservative thought leader of sorts. To me, civil disobedience is a weird thing for an American to disagree with. Most of what I’ve heard him say was reasonable relative to conservatism of that time, but disagreeing with civil disobedience seems authoritarian.
@roughhabit90852 жыл бұрын
You confess you’re no Buckley scholar and at the same time you are dumbfounded that you have never heard him express a certain opinion?
@lvn4x2 жыл бұрын
@@roughhabit9085 I’m not dumbfounded about anything. The fact that anyone in mainstream politics in the second half of the 20th century in America would say they don’t believe in civil disobedience disappoints me. I guess there are two types of disobedience: civil disobedience and uncivil disobedience. So if you don’t believe in civil disobedience, you either prefer uncivil disobedience or you don’t believe in disobedience at all. One of those sounds like an anarchist view and the other an authoritarian view. From what I’ve seen and heard of Buckley up to this point, I had him pegged as neither anarchist nor authoritarian.
@lvn4x2 жыл бұрын
@Hanover Fiste To me rioting by it’s definition is uncivil disobedience, but perhaps rioters were classifying their actions as “civil disobedience”, so I imagine you’re right.
@roughhabit90852 жыл бұрын
Well Thoreau wrote the book on civil disobedience and I don’t recall him advocating rioting. Buckley said the same thing to Galbraith with the caveat except when somebody gets in the way of my rights to conscience. Buckley was not anybody in politics. Kissinger said he single handedly shifted American politics to the right. He was no disappointment to me . Dumbfounded may have been the wrong word. I should have said ignorant.

As a Leftist, I honestly loved hearing Buckley speak because he was so intelligent. Not the glibness that today passes for intelligence, but for genuinely being able to elucidate his ideas in a manner in which thinking people could process and appreciate. However, this 'interview' is so weakened by Meir Kahane that it really becomes meaningless. What a shame that Cavette participated in this charade, but what a a greater shame that he influenced so many people with this. Genocide of the Palestinians? Yeah, let's just process that away with bullshit propaganda and lies. .... FFS
@olylongmember6 ай бұрын
Kahane never asked for the genocide of anyone. He proposed that there's a great incongruence between Zionism (the need for a Jewish national home) and so-called democracy in Israeli society where arabs becoming a high percentage of the population would democratically extinguish Israel as a Jewish state. Therefore, arabs should be expelled and transferred to the neighboring Arab countries or stay in Israel with their political rights removed. That's quite different from genocide.

It took me a long time to learn that intelligence is not tied to eloquence. It is a skill that almost anybody can learn. Did anybody else notice that in his small defeat, he instantly assumed that irritating half-grin of his, as if he was celebrating a small, secret victory? I'm guessing that many bedazzled people would score that as a victory. He really should be celebrated as a master of grammatically correct gibberish, delivered with utmost panache.
