Check out Pt. 2! - • How to Clean a DPF Pt....
In this video I'll show you the easiest and one of the most effective ways to clean your DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Air cleaning will remove some of the built up Ash only. This method will remove nearly all of the Ash, Soot and even other contaminants that may have gotten in there.
Detroit Diesel, Cummins, International, Caterpillar, etc. It doesn't matter. It will even work on light duty applications.
Hi Folks. Today I want to show you a cheap, easy and effective way to clean a Diesel Particulate Filter, or "DPF".
Now in this example I'm using a heavy duty Diesel Particulate Filter out of DD15. A Detroit Engine. Now here you see one of the DPFs. This particular engine used two DPFs working together in what they call a "1Box". The number of filters used or shape or size and anything like that doesn't really matter. The overall purpose of the filter is the same. It's there to trap and collect Soot from the Engine. Now we won't go into how to regenerate these filters or how they work that way, that's for another video. This is just about cleaning them when they've reached the end of their service life. When they're filled with Ash.
Now most manufacturers are going to recommend that you replace these filters. They're going to have exchange programs set up where you give them your dirty filter and they'll give you a previously cleaned filter that they've cleaned themselves. This usually costs a lot of money. Some manufacturers have authorized cleaning procedures that can be done at your local shop for example. Air cleaners are typically what's used. We've found that Air cleaning is not very effective. A lot of manufacturers are not getting away from that. They're not recommending it, they don't endorse it. Air cleaning leaves a large percentage of the filter plugged. You're not getting full flow through it after it's cleaned. Manufacturers are now starting to go to a liquid cleaning process. It's a little fancier than what I'm going to show you here but it's also a lot more expensive. What I'm going to show you now is very effective. We've had great luck with it.
And it really couldn't be simpler. We're just going to pressure wash the filters out. This method looks pretty crude and you wont find it in any manual from any engine manufacturer but it works! We've ran this by some of the head trainers from people like Cummins and Detroit and they wont go on record to tell you this but they'll give you a nod when you tell them that you're doing it.
You want to make sure not to use any chemicals or cleaning solutions of any kind. Just straight water. Heated water preferably. You also want to spray in the opposite direction of the exhaust flow to push the soot and ash back out the way it came. If you're using high pressure don't get too close to the cell walls. You don't want to damage the substrate or knock out some of the plugs at the end of the cells. You'll be able to see the soot and ash coming out the back side of the filter as you spray it. Just continue to spray until the water coming out of it looks relatively clean. Be sure to get the entire face area of the filter. The outside edges can hold a lot too. This method is also very effective at getting contaminants out of the filters. If, for example, you've had a ruptured EGR cooler and you've had coolant enter the system, you can wash it out. I have access to an air cleaning machine but it's to the point now where it rarely gets used. This is usually the preferred method.

Thanks for the video...I went ahead and did this...First i boiled lots of water, i put the filters in seperate containers big enough to hold each..Then i poured the rolling boiling water in ,and sumerged both..Then after about 20 min i grabbed each filter and lifted them up and back down, swishing the water thru them..This got tons out of the filters..Next i pulled them out after about 45 min...Let them cool a little , and powerwashed them like you did..I did that for about 30 min, being careful to not go to hard and damage them.I then reboiled water and repeated this process the same way, and powerwashed again afterwards..They came super clean, i was very happy with the results .I then put them in the sun to dry..The next day they were reinstalled ,and everything is perfect..I driven about 10,000 miles since then ,and life is good, no problems..

Dude, You are the Bomb. Thank you so much for clarifying this. I just did what you said and used my hot-water pressure-washer with a wide-angle tip and cranked back the pressure a bit [it is a 3500psi] to below 2500 or so and started cleaning very carefully. Dam if the whole cap popped right off and a ton of soot can out [They do a lot of short trips around town]. Did a quick Borescope and found no visible evidence of damage. Bought 2 gaskets and reinstalled the sensors. This is the fix. Again thank you so much and my customer loves ya.

I've recently had a DPF issue on my Mini Countryman, and ended up cutting my filter open, performing a high temperature pyrolytic clean (in our self-cleaning oven no less...) and then pressure wash in the reverse direction as you have shown here. By using the high temperature process first, it made sure all of the unburnt fuel in the filter was already turned to ash, (without chemicals) and making it much easier for the pressure washer to clean the remaining particles clean. thanks for sharing

with out proprietary software how do you update the dpf miles in the computer? cleaning is only 1/2 the battle- the light is still on unless you update the module. every pound of diesel has soot in it. years ago it just went into the atmosphere, now we trap it, burn it, spray chems on it, then remove the filter, clean the filter and flush it down the drain into our water supply. besides making several new industries to either delete the dpf or clean it, what has been accomplished with all that crap the epa has mandated! another prime example of the fourth branch of government forcing crony capitalism down our throats.

I want to add an update to my previous story and that is that after we change the filter I went on another trip and had more problems with my DPF. My DPF light went on but I was not able to regen at all.I was able to get to a mechanic before it went to level four and he found that all of the sensors were in the wrong position.now that the DPF was cleaned the sensors were receiving information that did not make sense to the information they should be receiving since all sensors were in the wrong positions the data they were receiving was also incorrect.the mechanic was able to move the sensors to the right positions and allowed the truck to go into regen process.I think cleaning the DPF was the catalyst that expose the real underlying problem of the sensors being in the wrong position since all of the sensors were able to receive information due to the unclogged DPF filter now the data that they were receiving did not make sense with the information they should be receiving.the moral to the story is make sure that all of the sensors are in the correct position before digging into more complicated Solutions says there's a good possibility that the DPF system was worked on prior with another owner or mechanic. This mayhelp you reduce your repair cost once you know that the DPF sensors are all in the correct position on the DPF housing.

I worked at international dealership and I serviced the doc and dpf. we used fsx air machine and I was quite impressed, I thought it did a great job. my opinion was it was stupid we collected the soot from the items then throw the soot in the garage. the soot ends up in the environment anyway. that still has to be way better than removing from water. I also thought EPA was stupid...... how is it illegal to idle more than 5 minutes but somehow good for the environment to run at 1200 rpm for half hour dumping raw fuel in the exhaust? bp and mobile must have designed after treatment system.

It doesn't work like this: Soot is caught by DPF and burned off either during heavy load or when engine enters regen mode. Soot is carbon, it goes into CO2 and flows out of your exhaust as a gas. What stays in the filter is ash - non-burnable solids that pass through your engine and come from oil and fuel additives, engine wear products or even very fine dust particles that make their way through air filter and get stuck in DPF. You get only tiny fraction of ash in your exhaust compared to soot, otherwise your DPF would get filled in no time.

+Crystal ojeda Thanks a lot. The filters are a maintenance item. At least in a Detroit, it will set a fault code telling you when they need cleaned based on the duty cycle that engine has been running. Milage and hours are not good factors to judge how plugged they are since no 2 units run the same. The engine ECUs will monitor things like fuel used, etc to determine when they need to cleaned. The fault code that sets will not derate horsepower unless it is indeed for too long. After they're cleaned, the ECU needs to be told to reset the count. Much like an oil life monitor in a car. I've heard of people being able to drill holes in older models and get away with it but I really don't think it would work on anything from at least 2010 and up. These ECUs are very smart and are constantly running diagnostics to make sure everything is working just as it should. After 2017, soot sensors were introduced to really put a stop to things like that.

I'm not sure what the substrate of the filter media consists of but I can't see why you couldn't pre-soak the dpf filter in a hot bath mixed with CLR or similar product to soften/loosen the carbon soot buildup then a short rinse with high pressure water. Another option I wondered for older diesels like mine without emissions and EGR is a simple steel mesh air filter like the same one used on the intake side to capture carbon soot particles, then wash it out at every oil change "B" service.

I'm not a tree hugger by any means. But seems kinda silly that we can't have the soot in the air but we can wash the soot out of the filter into the water systems......lol makes perfect sense. Still ended up into the environment just took more steps to get there.......enginering at work. Just my 2 cents

Jamie Prentice Soot is trapped in the filter and then converted. What you're seeing washed out is Ash. There's a LOT less of it but, you're right, it's not very good for the environment either.

every pound of diesel fuel has pollutants the epa does not like. we used to put them into the air straight away, now we have an entire industry to build computer controlled boxes to trap and incinerate these , but once they are full we wash the "concentrate" down the drain and call that progress.

Jamie Prentice true, and here in Australia with DPF’s end emission laws over the last 15 years we have seen an increase of over 200% in melanomas. This is from a professor at Westmead hospital. Particulate may look bad, but it’s one hell of a UV filter.

For the record air cleaning is done in a puffer machine which does clean the filter if it was NOT OVERLOADED WITH PARTICULATE MATTER( PM) In this case the filter has to be baked for 8 hours at 1200 DEGS F then put back into the puffer to push the ash out.I have been working with DPF'S AND UREA since 2002 long before the Federal law in 2007.

one problem for the backyard mechanics. you still need proprietary software to get in the exhaust management computer and update the clean/replace dpf miles or the light will not go out. also when you reinstall the dpf you need to lead/asbestos wrapped clamp so it will reseal when it gets hot. failure to replace the clamp will give a leak inside the one box. and then you get a dpf pressure diff code. if the code comes up to clean the dpf you can still go 10k-15k miles with the light on. engine will not shut down.
@firstname6208
@firstname6208 6 жыл бұрын
forgot to mention , perform a parked regen before removing the dpf's. when u have the dpf's out write down the dpf serial numbers. you will need those numbers when you update the exh management computer. also inspect the dpf's close. any crack or meltage on the surface of the substrate - they are junk. no core, not reusable. there should be zero, zilch, nada, no soot on the outlet side at all. have a dozen 1/4" fender nuts and 1/4 x3/4" bolts in the tool box because you will need them.

+First Name For Detroit's, this is all true. Like I've written in other comments though, resetting the Ash Accumulator is literally a 1 minute job. A shop will still charge a fee for it I'm sure, but it shouldn't be much. As for the clamps and seals, it sucks but they can be quite expensive. I definitely wouldn't try reuse them though.

I think this is what I’m going to do. I just bought used a Takeuchi 8. The DPF is thoroughly clogged. The machine is throwing a code and won’t stay in Regen. I bought the machine to be a beater, not my primary equipment. I expect it would cost minimum 3G to have it done professionally? If not more? So power wash it and put it back in and that’s it? Should I expect it to stop throwing a code automatically or run regen? Great vid.

I have a question about residual water that may be left in the filters! I guess you could blow some out with compressed air, but these filter look to be very deep (long) so even after blowing them out with air would still leave a LOT of moisture within the internals of the filter, do you let them dry out for a period of time before installing them? or do you just mount them back on the truck and let the exhaust heat dry them out?

i clean these professionally. we do tests before to make sure the dpf passes various tests before hand. we use a blast cabinet to blow out as much particulate as possible then move it to a high pressure water and air flush station. then again to the blast cabinet to blow out as much moisture as possible then proceed to bake the dpf for 12 hours at 1100 degrees Celsius. after all that we move it to the blast station again to get the final particulates out. our cleaning method cleans 99% of contaminates in the dpf or doc.
