Credit to Mark Russell who composed the theme, the brief was to commission 7 tracks for Pearson in 1998, this was the ‘best ever’ Bill theme tune, liked the underscores, one with sax, one without, there was a relic of the opening theme in 2000, unable to workout the 1998 original?.

@@alanhunting2146 Not done any research on your question, there were two versions of the underscore, one with or with out the sax, no sax version was 0:56”, with sax also 0:56”, that’s all I know.

This era was the best of The Bill; Beech's corruption and the CID downfall, Jim's alcoholism, Tony killing a pedestrian, the Santini plot, Dave's stabbing and so on. The cast was solid and the standalone episodes were superb as a result. After the Beech saga and when the titles updated in 2001 it really fell off for quite a few years. Was only getting back to its best in the later years between the soap era ending and the revamp in 2009.

Wow, this is when things got spicy and the plot heated right up for the first time. It led to all the spinoffs with Beech in Australia and Beech is Back. I saw his very first scene and he was just the same character as in his very last scene … but so much water under the bridge.

Certainly the ITV/Thames TV one was the original UK broadcast, and I imagine as it was more than twice weekly the follow up episode would've been on the following night. I imagine that later broadcasts couldn't be guaranteed that it would be scheduled together, particularly in Aus/NZ and on UKGold, so 2 alternative end credit sequences were edited - one with credits, one with a more dramatic preview. Wonder why it's on there twice, unless when the tapes have been acquired by the DVD publisher both endings or episode edits have been on them and they thought they'd be nice and publish both!
