As someone who has been to Honest Ed's, the madness experienced in Honest Ed's is highly accurate. The glaringly bright lights, literally hundreds of Elvis busts staring at you from every available surface, the spooky clocks from a production of Into The Woods (Honest Ed was a theatre impresario) the labyrinth of stairs and bargains that put Ikea to shame... the horror, the horror! +rmsgrey Well it's a slight retcon obviously, but take it as two different processes... The building Knives is sitting on is in Yonge and Dundas Square, which is in downtown Toronto, is basically our version of Times Square. The ‘castle’ in the last episode is Casa Loma, a giant mansion designed to look like a castle (now a museum and event venue) near-ish to where the rest of the events of the film take place. The battle of the bands takes place at Lee’s Palace a music venue. Most of the locations in the book and movie are in or near a downtown neighbourhood called the Annex. It’s got a very young hipster vibe, Scott and co are pretty much the exact type of people you’d expect to live there, both 10 years ago and today.

Interesting how you brought up that volume three was the point where the series settled on so casually displaying the weirdness of its world, because now that I think of it, in volume one it's surprising how little of that actually factors into the story. There's Ramona's subspace highway sure, but other than that, the fighting game/anime physics of the Patel fight seem to come out of nowhere with little foreshadowing, and the only fantastical elements other than that are Ramona offhandedly mentioning once knowing a guy with Morph Ball powers, and snow melting as she skated through it (which could arguably be written off as a visual gag, rather than something literally happening in-universe).

Fancy library that you mentioned isn't really a fancy Library, but actually the Eaton Centre which is a mall that has a fancy bookstore Call Chapters which is also related to Indigo. No because of the simplistic style of the comic you could mistake it for a fancy Library. ok so as someone who grew up like three blocks away from where the majority of this book was set i absolutely need to tell y'all that: 1. Honest Ed's was Just Like That. i went in there at least twice a week and still got lost every time. half the exits and entrances were one way only and sometimes you had to go down a floor and then back up to get to the other side of an area. it was labyrinthine and harrowing and i was lucky to make it out alive 2. When they play at Lee's Palace in the movie, Scott gets knocked through a wall and into a coffeeshop two stores down. the actual second cup is really two stores down on the same side 3. The Pizza Pizza they're eating at is really the Pizza Pizza across from Honest Ed's, it's about a block away from Lee's Palace, and it's the same Pizza Pizza you can see earlier in the movie when knives and scott are shopping I always loved that the geography actually made sense, it wasn't just random parts of Toronto mashed together!

I'm not good at commenting, but gotta protect the Dom from the Algorithm Monster so :D In all seriousness I'm really enjoying this review series so far. Scott Pilgrim was one of the first comics I read so it holds a rather special place in my heart. This part actually touched upon something I really enjoyed from the comics that I think unfortunately got lost in adaptation (no pun intended): the characterization. Some of the casts more nuanced aspects and some nice character interactions had to be cut, and while I understand why it happened and I think overall the movie does a pretty decent job condencing the story into a film, it's still a shame this stuff got left out.

I just discovered this KZbin channel the other day and I love it! I don't usually enjoy reviews but the combination of humor, nerdiness, and appreciation for nuance here are fantastic. I'm commenting on this video to see if I can help clear up the experience at Honest Ed's (a year after this video was posted... Sorry I wasn't here yet!). I'd never been to Honest Abe's, but I lived close to The Alley in Chicago when I was Scott Pilgrim's age and going inside was a very similar experience. Imagine your favorite movie/show/book/etc that's so bad it's good, now imagine you can walk around inside that so-bad-it's-good setting and BUY the stuff in there with your measly pocket change! Honestly that part of the book was one of the most relatable parts for me, and I was Scott Pilgrim for Halloween 2010.

I really want more! It's been years since I read them and I don't know the series anymore but I love watching you recap this for me!

The Dom, I'm so glad you are doing this entire series. It is so strange about the differences between the films and comics and how they both came to be and it's good to see them pointed out. Also I hope your voice is doing better now. You're lower tone of voice is surprisingly soothing to listen to.

I love Scott Pilgrim and have been enjoying this series so much! Keep up the good work (totally not saying this so that you don't get devoured).
