Acknowledging slight mistake: Young Neil is apparently Stephen Stills' roommate, not his brother. I guess I just assumed they must have been related from the amount of shit he's willing to put up with from him.

Fun Fact: I personally know the guy who designed the video-game-like text graphics used in the movie. He's been my best friend for nearly 20 years now. Though he and I did discover that he was miscredited on the DVD (He was not credited at all in the film's credits themselves though we were both hoping he would be. I looked for his name when I watched the film and did not see it), and credit for his work on the DVD was actually incorrectly given to the special effects studio, even though his work on those sequences was done outside of their production. So, I know no one is probably asking about this, but just for the sake of letting it be known, the text graphics for the video game parody sequences in this movie should be credited to "Vic Fieger". Just want anyone to know this, because I know he had brief contact with Universal about this and was brushed off.
@the-NightStar

Also, my take on the movie is that Scott Pilgrim himself as a character was obviously intended to be a two-timing douche. I find it clever because he's a self-righteous two-timing asshole who paints himself as the hero, thus the constant game references and him envisioning his own story as being the awesome self-insert gary stu badass cool guy action hero while pretending to be an affable everyman to shroud himself from the self-realization that he's not the hero, he's a prick. The point of the entire narrative is that the narrator is an unreliable one and a commentary about how we ALL see ourselves as the right and just one and the hero of our own stories.

I'm sorry about your friend Vic, it really seems like Universal did him raw. And as late as a lot of us are to the party, it's likely too late for Universal to recall those DVDs and reprint ones that properly credited him. Scott Pilgrim makes me want to jump through the screen and double-team him with the exes, so it may be that i waited far too many years to give this film any attention to be endeared to it, lol. But if nothing else, i will remember that Vic Fieger made some very sleek text effects for the movie. I hope he's treated better in future endeavors.

I firmly believe that Scott Pilgrim being an impulsive, self-involved, awful person was kind of the point. Ramona is the same as him. It's why they work, and together, they can help one another to become better people.

It's also what makes these comics unique and interesting. The main character IS a bad guy. I mean sure, he's not the most horrible person ever but the truth is at the beginning of the story Scott is a dick and he gets called out on his behavior, with his situation in life getting worse and worse until finally he confronts himself and realizes he needs to make a real change to be better off.

Sign me up for the "I used to relate to Scott Pilgrim when I was younger, good God what was wrong with me" club. For me, part of that was that I got into the series in my high school years, which were spent pining for a girl in my class from afar and never working up the courage to ask her out until my last few months, and then moping about how I got rejected. I still like the Scott Pilgrim series (the books have aged better for me, since they put a greater emphasis on Scott realising what a prick he is and improving as a person, although I still enjoy the movie), but still, the fact that I related to Scott at all makes me thank the fates that I haven't grown up into a simpering incel "Nice Guy" as I easily could have.
@dariuswatson6298
@dariuswatson6298 5 жыл бұрын
I agree about the books ageing better. In the film he never has that realisation and you never really see any growth in him. Whereas in the books, he does realise how much of a prick he's been and has a lot of character development over the course of the series. I also felt like he and Ramona didn't have that much chemistry in the film but they seem perfect for each other in the books despite their differences.

I just think it’s a normal thing most people go through in general. You’re not a terrible insufferable person for having done it or maybe even going through it, you’re just maturing and it takes time yknow?
@dapeach06
@dapeach06 5 жыл бұрын
That must be why I hated the film so much, I couldn't relate to him at all, because I was already in my mid twenties when this came out, and completely cringed at all of the "Nice Guy TM" stuff in it, and the fact that he was around my age, but dating a high schooler, super creepy. At least in Pineapple Express, where Seth Rogen's character is doing the same thing, they make him out to be a total dirtbag for it, and he even realizes there's a maturity gap

There was a moment that I thought you might touch on when you got to the part about Scott fixating on Ramona's abilities. In the comic she looks momentarily horrified when she notes that they don't have subspace tunnels in Canada, seemingly blaming herself for Scott's creepy behavior since he would have thought this was some experience that would be supernatural even in their world. This came across in like one panel, and it does a lot to explain why she'd have accepted the date and viewed everything about him in a positive light during it. Always thought it was weird that they cut that reaction.
@victormirandakoepke8352
@victormirandakoepke8352 Жыл бұрын
Coming in late here, but iirc Ramona feels guilty because she uses the subspace tunnels incredibly frequently and it passes straight through his head. She says that is what made him so obsessed (since she is literally on his mind all the time)

I grew up in Toronto AND knew a post high school band and helped them lug their stuff from one venue to another. This movie was eeeerie for me, i never related to a bit of media more. Like, you know when the band plays Rockit and a line flashes "Fun Fact: This Place is a Toilet". HAHA, funny because the place is a bit bit of a dump right? Rockit was an actual toilet, like it's dubious claim to fame was that actual human feces were hurled at bands that the audience didn't like. it had no windows and no vents. i'm really surprised no one ever died of plague in that place. When that message flashed along the big screen my friends and I lost it we were laughing so hard.

I actually prefer movie Scott because of the way it showcases how easy it is to be a complete douche primarily by inaction. Scott never actively tries to hurt anyone and at least in his own head he’s a little bit the victim of all of this. Playing him as introverted instead of confident really leans into this crucial flaw and, I think, helps make a good point about how you don’t have to be a jock/extrovert/socially savvy guy to be a complete asshole. It’s true that Scott still mostly gets away with his actions, but that’s only after he’s called out on what a jerk he is and he decides to change. I also like how they tie him choosing to change and ask for forgiveness to him choosing to step up and learn some self-respect. It can be really hard to make good choices and treat others with dignity if you don’t start with yourself (even if that seems counterintuitive). Especially when you’re like Scott is at the beginning of this movie.

Someone pointed out to me that, in the comics, Scott’s actually the one who gives the initial sign of discomfort when spending the first night with Ramona, so when she says she changes her mind about having sex with him, it’s in response to his sign that he’s not sure he wants to fully consent. And after she denies him he almost seems relieved. This is a very subtle change but it gives huge insights into both Scott and Ramona from the get-go.

Honestly, I think cera’s less-confident Scott plays nicer with the film thematically than a more confident Scott would. The film has an overarching theme of making peace with your romantic baggage in order to become your own person/better yourself, and this goes hand in hand with Scott learning self confidence in a really tidy way. With an more confident Scott, it would be a lot harder to show that baggage closure & growing independence in an easily spottable way, I think.

Small thing: I noticed you interpreted the scene with Ramona changing her mind about sex as a way of Scott being respectful, but I took it differently both in the comics and movie. While they're making out in bed, Scott kind of voices a weird discomfort with what's going on ("um, I think we, um") and Ramona immediately puts it on herself to say "I changed my mind, I don't want to have sex." For me, it was a really consent positive message where Ramona was caring for her partner's comfort level and could read that he wasn't interested in sex so she stopped. Anyways, I really loved both these books and comics. I'm so glad you reviewed this series!

Although I guess his version of Scott has still managed to grow on me over time.

As a Canadian, growing up alongside Scott during the same times at roughly the same age, my then-boyfriend (now-husband) introduced them to me - and we both were amazed by a story that actually took place not only in our country, but near our own city (30 minutes by car to the TO), and made us both imprint on the series. I loved the movie more than my husband, who loved the books. I wasn't as fond of the books, because of the painful emotional bullshit that was put in the comic and not in the films (Cho and Kim actually make out at one point, and purely for fanservice and nothing else). So seeing this cheered both of us old Canadian millenials very much. Thank you! 💚

My issue with this amazing movie is definitely the two leads. They are so different that the Scott and Ramona from the graphic novels. Yes, they are also kinda jerks in the books, but they are also super interesting, funny, engaging, and they both work to become better people that deserve each other. The movie made Ramona flat af, and Scott has huge issues like you said.

I had the same experience as the dom, except I thought Scott was a child trying to not be an adult and later I realized he has two gorgeous women after him and all he can do is complain that he has to pick one. He is essentially belle swan for 50 % of the movie.
@WildSableye
@WildSableye 5 жыл бұрын
+Brandon Roberts Oh please, Scott's fundamental problem is selfishness - he bounces around from girlfriend to girlfriend in an effort to fulfill something inside him that he can't with his secretly poor self-esteem masked by arrogance and confidence in the books, but by sheepishness and ignorance in the movie. His situation is poor because he has lied and cheated two women for his own personal gain, the first, Knives, damaged emotionally by this, and the latter, Ramona, having already done this herself on more than one occasion, with Scott finding difficulty accepting this - at first unaware of this harbored self hatred projecting itself onto Ramona's actions. So, in short, no - Scott does not have it perfect. The situation is obviously more complex and both the movie and the comic book have an important lesson in understanding that relationships aren't as simple as "me want lover", they take time and effort, and a sprinkle of honesty to get there. TL;DR - Don't judge people based on societal structures of what it means to be "loved" - attempting to "decide" between two girls based on a flawed, not-fully-developed mental state is as hard as it would be for a woman to "decide" between two hot guys whilst battling teenage anxiety. Bella Swan is still a shittily written character, though.
@Vashthestampede967
@Vashthestampede967 5 жыл бұрын
@Bill suffocated. I can understand perfectly where you are coming from, but I will disagree. I think Scott pilgrim was not a very likable character upon later viewings. He is selfish and inconsiderate of others feelings for a majority of the movie. That is all I will say on the matter, I understand your point but I will kindly disagree.
@WildSableye
@WildSableye 5 жыл бұрын
+Vash Stampede What's to disagree? I never argued Scott wasn't an asshole, my first line points out his selfishness. I'm only saying that the reason for his dislikability isn't founded on silly intonations of whining about having to pick between two girls, the narrative highlights this conflict in a manner wherein Scott isn't being "unappreciative", he's facing consequences for his behavior.
@Vashthestampede967
@Vashthestampede967 5 жыл бұрын
+Bill Suffocated Part of my disagreement is that he does in fact mope about over having to pick. That is one of the components of him being an asshole for me. I dislike it when ever a character like this is presented for the same reason I dislike belle swan. He acts like a child and doges taking responsibility for his actions until the end, but at that point for me and what I like Scott had taken it too far for me. Scott complains over deciding between his 3 month girl friend and a girl who he just met, dumped knives for a girl he barely knows, gets angry at the girl he barely knows for not telling him about her evil ex's which may have come up if he actually bothered to ask anything about her, acts like a creeper for a good chunk in trying to get to Ramona, and none the less disregards almost all of their feelings until the end. That is genuinely all my disagreement amounts to, I partially dislike him for how he regards the two women in the movie. I will note that I do not want to have a full on conversation about this as I meant it as throw away comment.
@WildSableye
@WildSableye 5 жыл бұрын
+Vash Stampede Well then we shall leave it at that, but I'm still not disagreeing with anything in your comment. I believe you may have misunderstood me, Scott's irresponsibility IS a bad thing, but him moping about it is not - in fact, if he were to spend just a little bit more time moping, he might've realized what he's doing to these two people by choosing between them. But that is irrelevant to the point I was trying to make, that him choosing between to women is not him not appreciating what's being given to him - because they have a choice as much as he did, and Scott chose to act like an immature dickhead without consideration for how either girl would react.

So in the scene where they pause in that landing in the library, I can say I was there. Fun fact: At least when me and my friend were on this tour (2012 or so?), Sonic Boom, the record store everyone hangs out at in both versions, if you were sorting through bands using the plastic dividers with band names on them, they had the names of all the bands in Scott Pilgrim.

Your description of how you realized what Scott was really like and what that meant since you once idolized him is something i think everyone has faced and something to be proud of. It means you've grown as a person. Nobody likes their past. Everyone has something they've messed up in their past, something theyre ashamed of, but being ashamed of those things is paradoxically something to be proud of because it just means youre a better person now.

When I heard there was a movie coming out I grabbed all the books and read them first. While I liked both, I liked the story in books better. The books have a lot more time to breathe and world build. You just can't do that when you cram 6 books worth of story into one movie. Maybe they could have stretched it out to three movies? SP v the World, SP v the Universe, and SP's Finest Hour, two books a movie. I think that (and a different actor to play Scott) would have resulted in a much better product.
