Hey Dom, reading the banns was actually something you had to do in order to get married in Regency England and they had to be read out at either the man or woman's church three times -- so you had a minimum 3 week engagement period.... unless you were wealthy and could afford a special marriage license that let you get married where you wanted when you wanted. This is why Mrs. Bennet starts gushing to Lizzy about her being able to be married by special license when she finds out about her engangement to Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice.

The wedding delay and special license is one of the few historically accurate bits though! At the time, to get married you would have to have your marriage announced as upcoming at church for three weeks before you could get married so people could have the chance to pipe up if there were some reason to halt the marriage. This was called having the banns read. The only way to get around this was either a Special License or to go to Scotland where the banns were not required and the age of marriage without parental involvement was 16.

@GomushinGirl
@GomushinGirl Ай бұрын
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, it's not, though. There were basically four ways to get hitched in Regency England (assuming you're not one of the exempted dissenting groups, but let's ignore that for now): 1) Go to Scotland, where the Clandestine Marriage Act didn't apply 2) Have the banns read for three weeks in the home parish, followed by a marriage before noon, performed in the home parish of one of the parties by a clergyman of the Church of England. 3) Marriage by Common License, which required a fee and an investigation by the church to assure all was on the up and up, followed by a marriage before noon, performed in the home parish of one of the parties by a clergyman of the Church of England. 4) Marriage by Special license, which required a fee and an investigation by the Archbishop of Canterbury to assure all was on the up and up, followed by a marriage performed by a clergyman of the Church of England, but it could happen at any time and in any place you fancied, as long as the Archbishop said it was cool. It was rare and restricted only to the aristocracy. The last of these could be faster than reading the banns, but not as fast as portrayed in the show and it was much more about showing off that you a) had the cash to splash and b) were too fancy to risk having randos show up at your wedding because it was in public. So special licenses were a thing and Simon, as a duke, is one of the few characters who probably could have gotten one . . . but it wouldn't really have solved the problem they had in the time frame they portrayed?

@@Panbaneesha I give it about five years before there's a reckoning about this and it's going to get weird. I frankly think women are so defensive about it because a stunning number of them are on the wrong side of it. Like not only was he assaulted by the one person he trusted, but she was yelling at him and telling him that it was his fault she did it, and his stutter returned. I am still angry it was never, ever addressed as a thing a person should never do to someone they love, but just like… some unfortunate thing that happened between married people that could be solved with a baby??? Like what the fuck why am I supposed to find this sexy or romantic??? If the situation had been the other way around, we would have been rioting in the streets about how regressive it was. I finished the season because I was hoping it would get addressed, but it never was, so I just haven’t returned to the series.

As someone who adored these books when they first came out, I understand that they would be considered average now. At the time I picked up "The Viscount Who Loved Me" for the first time, I was a junior in high school who had to rely on hunting down romance novels in the public library. I'd read countless traditional bodice rippers with so much dub con that reading a book with two humorous people falling in love with minimal abuse was so refreshing that I proceeded to hunt down everything else Julia Quinn had written. At the time, the anachronistic style was accessible for a high schooler burned out on literature. I imagine thousands of other women looking for something lighter in the historical romance genre also read the Bridgerton series and enjoyed it similarly.

@@ivoryhammitt8885 This is generally good advice, but some things are more likely to cause real harm than others. Something like Hello Fresh is going to have you overpaying for fairly small portions of food and really tiny spice packages, but at the end of the day you do get actual food. That company that does wine subscriptions is probably encouraging alcoholism to some degree, and also likely overcharging for their product - but you do get actual wine. Better Help is so shitty that a significant portion of people who turn to them end up in a worse position than they were to start with. Like, their specific product (accessible mental healthcare) is fundamentally a lie. And let me tell you, as someone who's been there - if you're deep in a mental health crisis, and finally get your hopes up that you might get some help, only to be slapped down? that's not just going to set you back to square one, that's going to push you into the kind of negative space where you're wistfully dreaming of being back on square one.

On the "is the anachronistic writing intentional" subject, the answer is probably. I recently tried to get my sister to read a book that takes place in the Victorian era that did a really good job with incorporating the speech not just in dialogue but in the description. My sister was completely unable to finish the book, because she couldn't understand it. The writing was confusing to her. So Bridgerton's success is probably due to the fact that there's just enough flavor for readers to feel the setting, but not so much as to scare off readers unfamiliar with the speech and writing style of the era.

This. Ultimately historical genre fiction is meant to engage the reader in whatever tropes and plots they're into reading, more than be a completely accurate historical account. There's definitely more and less accurate stuff out there but in reality, it's costume drama, it's dress up and that's the pleasure of it.
@Nico6th

@@Ceares Agreed. Historical fiction is meant to be entertaining and to give readers a glimpse into another epoche. For historical accuracy just get an actual history book about the period. And you can never fit "all of it" into one book anyway, which is why people study those things for years at universities. There are some pretty good/accurate documentaries/live on a victorian farm-style series out there too.

For me, Bridgerton feels like one of those fancy desserts that looks absolutely gorgeous in its spectacle but taste wise can range from decent to meh. It's a guilty pleasure for so many, myself included, but I do love that such a good and fun romance series is leading the charge at Netflix and is as popular as it is. Romance is still looked down upon today, despite being one of the best-selling genres of books, so it's just nice to see that good romances are still being created for the audiences who love them. Also Dom, I would absolutely love to hear you discuss Seasons 2 and 3 and Queen Charlotte - I do think you would love them, especially now that you've read the books, though I guess that means you would have to read the Queen Charlotte book... Lastly, I'm not going to mention BetterHelp because Dom already did; I'm just glad he's listening to the audience and taking steps to avoid sponsorships like them in the future. There wasn't a minimum engagement time per se, but you had to announce your marriage in the papers two weeks before the actual wedding, to allow for people to speak up against it (e.g. parent's, already married partners (this is not a joke, because there wasn't a country wide register for marriages, you could just ditch your old partner, move somewhere else and potentially get married again) or people that had some other reason to contest the wedding. That's one of the reasons why people liked to elope to Scotland, because that law didn't exist there.

@@somethingclever8916there’s some pretty good ones out there, just not as well known. I have a specific book series in mind but the name escapes me because I’ve read so many, I’ve been on a historical binge the past couple of years, but one of the books is basically Regency Batman. This dude has a lot of money and is a noble and learned how to fight from an eccentric noble man. While his beloved wife is incredibly sick and dying he starts fighting injustice as a way to deal with his grief, and he starts going to the most dangerous and poorest neighborhood in the city to help people and save kids to take them to an orphanage he partly sponsors, and for most of his book he is investigating a plot where poor kids are being taken to be forced to work for a mysterious person, who is exploiting them to make money. I really enjoyed it. Curiosity demanded I find out what book it was because I couldn’t rest otherwise, and I did. The specific book is called Lord of Darkness by Elizabeth Hoyt, and the book series is called Maiden Lane.

The plethora of handsome dukes of marriageable age (and at least reasonably close to heroine's age) is astounding. I read one once were the future duke and his siblings grew up on an estate within walking distance of a neighboring estate on which there was also a duke's son growing up. There are maybe 16 non-royal dukes in the UK and they have thousands of acres usually spread over several properties. The chances of 2 being roughly the same age, both being raised on neighboring estates, AND have the manors be located sufficiently close to the edge of the property to make walking visits feasible is simply astronomical.

On the topic of the colour integration into high society, you see that racism in Queen Charlotte. The main Bridgerton story takes place about 50 years after the marriage of George and Charlotte and both the Queen and people like Agatha work hard to stamp out any echo of it. But even before their marriage, POCs were present in high society just didn't have titles to be part of the Queen's court. We see this in the Danburys getting their title but already living lavishly. They've been working on integrating for a while, but a Queen of colour was what kicked off the final changes, as racial discrimination of one of the King's subjects, was a direct reflection of his choice in wife as well. We also see the beginnings of "Racism is taught" in the contrast between 1. The Dowager Princess and her son and 2. Young Violet and her Dad and his Wife/her Mother. Looking at our own timeline, 50 years made a lot of progress from segregation to the year 2000, but as I point out, at the time of Queen Charlotte's marriage, POCs were NOT segregated just 'not yet held to the same regard', but almost. 50 years to be rid the ton of most racism seems reasonable to me, that's 2 generations for normalizing integration, but not so long that there are mixed families everywhere you look.

One of my favorite historical romance authors has a heroine who gets pregnant (and eventually miscarries) exactly because there is no sex ed at the time and her seducer keeps assuring her that what they are actually doing isn't what's going to happen after they get married but something else instead that is perfectly acceptable before marriage between (secretly) engaged persons. The doctor who is the hero is somewhat of a reformer and has a nice rant on the subject.

i have only read the books, as a teenager i sniped a copy from my mom's collection of one of the adjacent non-bridgerton love stories (Henry and Dunford) and loved it so much that i went back to read every single julia quinn that my mom had. i loved them all so much. i did at the time notice the issue you mentioned of every conflict between main characters being easily solved by communication. They all follow a similar formula too. Protags meet, have rising tension between them, eventually recognize their feelings for one another, have a communication-related issue that nearly drives them apart, and then reconcile only to (in most cases) have a late-stage conflict that nearly ruins everything again, sometimes putting one or both in actual danger. i was so excited to hear that they were being adapted, but i haven't watched the show yet as i don't have a netflix subscription, and had decided to wait until more of the series was released to actually get one to binge the show. lately i've considered re-reading them before watching so i can do my own "what was changed" casual analysis to annoy my wife when i make her watch them with me. my main complaint is that there was never a sapphic love story. i genuinely expected Eloise to be gay at the beginning of her book and was a little disappointed that she just became a stepmom but the story was still good.

Regarding the Queen being involved in the Duke and Daphne’s marriage plans: it’s actually a thing where couples needed the banns (meaning their names would be called out) to be announced in church for a three Sundays in a row. A special license from the Archbishop of Canterbury way of circumventing the pomp of all this, especially in “delicate” situations, like being compromised, as Daphne was. Another alternative referenced in the show was going to Gretna Green in Scotland, because they didn’t have as many restrictions on marriage.
@GomushinGirl
@GomushinGirl Ай бұрын
Special licenses weren't really about being compromised, they were about privacy (it gave you permission to marry outside the morning hours and outside your parish church) and showing off your social and economic status (they were expensive, rare, and limited to members of the aristocracy). It wasn't even particularly fast (they're not getting it the next day!) because it still required the Archbishop of Canterbury to do an investigation. It would just mean Duke Simon wouldn't have to deal with rabble being able to gawk.
