I had a girlfriend around this time (1967) that had long beautiful auburn hair and when we would hung out in her room, she was always crocheting something. She was very fast, and her stitches were perfectly formed & spaced. So, one day I asked her, how do you do that? "Come here and I'll show you". Long story short...I was all thumbs, I couldn't get it right at all and I remember her looking at me, saying, "you've got to pickup every stitch" otherwise it gets to be a mess. I think Donovan must have had a similar experience and just started rhyming lines that went with this statement.

In which I reveal my age: I vividly remember when this was released. I bought the album it is on immediately. It was 1966. I have always loved it. Dripping with atmosphere and suggested, hinted at meanings. And such a great sound. I still have the LP I bought at the time, but I haven’t played it in years. This is the first time I have listened to it on KZbin, and I have to say it amazes me! It must have been remastered or remixed at some point because I’m hearing all kinds of things in it, various instruments that jump out at me, that I never noticed before, or at least never paid much attention to. Now they slap me in the face! It is almost like hearing a new song, but with the comfortable familiarity of one you’ve known and loved for decades. I’ve just listened to it three times in a row, and I’m about to go for a fourth. Thank you!

For me, it IS a new song. I can't believe it took me 50 years to finally listen to it! Right now is my first time, and I'm glad to hear this. Some friends of mine covered it last night at a performance in Buffalo. That peaked my interest. Unusual, because I love the music from the 60s and normally don't need to be sparked like that. This is SO amazing!

This track oozes so much atmosphere. As important as the chords are, the slinkily arhythmic guitar and bass lines are what give this song its paranoid swagger. The way the downbeat gets subsumed by backbeat and syncopation in the verses is awesome and adds a lot to the track’s uneasy groove. “Sure is strange” indeed

Subsumed! Love that word. Never thought I'd see it in a KZbin comment section. Bravo! Yes, uneasy is right. And adding to the atmosphere is the sotto voce of the verse morphing into the anguished wail of the chorus.

"Season Of The Witch" When I look out my window Many sights to see And when I look in my window So many different people to be That it's strange So strange You got to pick up every stitch You got to pick up every stitch You got to pick up every stitch Mmmm, must be the season of the witch Must be the season of the witch, yeah Must be the season of the witch When I look over my shoulder What do you think I see? Some other cat lookin' over His shoulder at me And he's strange Sure is strange You got to pick up every stitch You got to pick up every stitch, yeah Beatniks are out to make it rich Oh no, must be the season of the witch Must be the season of the witch, yeah Must be the season of the witch You got to pick up every stitch Two rabbits runnin' in the ditch Beatniks out to make it rich Oh no, must be the season of the witch Must be the season of the witch Must be the season of the witch When I go When I look out my window What do you think I see? And when I look in my window So many different people to be It's strange Sure is strange You got to pick up every stitch You got to pick up every stitch Two rabbits runnin' in the ditch Oh no, must be the season of the witch Must be the season of the witch, yeah Must be the season of the witch When I go When I go

Like: Can't go out/Gotta stay home/Can only call mom on the telephone. And: No fun/covid/yer no fun. No fun/quarantine/yer no fun. No fun to stay at home/feeling that covid way/no fun to be alone/freaked out for another day. Lol. Not quite finished yet

Hi, Liz. Could I ask if you remember the ‘60s band Coven? They were fronted by Jinx Dawson. I’ve been wanting to ask people who were actually around to witness the mid to late ‘60s firsthand if they knew about the band Coven at the time. Have you heard of Coven or Jinx Dawson? I’ve been hoping to find people who actually saw Coven perform, or even just knew something about them, during the mid to late ‘60s.

There's a book called Season of the Witch(Named after this song of course) about the turbulent history of San Francisco between 1967 and 1982. It's a good read if San Francisco is special to you, if you like that period of history, or if you just want to read a really good book.

Agreed. People don't get the multidimentional references . "My window" is the black hole of your eye. Yes, it's strange.

I saw Donavan live. It was just him and his guitar. He was so great. It was a beautiful evening.

I've known of Donovan since I was a little kid because I heard the song "Mellow Yellow" on the radio and liked it a lot, and my mom told me yeah that's by a guy called Donovan. I'm in my early 20's now and I decided to finally listen to more than just one of his songs and I had no idea this dude was so fucking good. Every single track of his I've listened to so far has been a winner.

Indicates that Donovan has a wide range of guitar playing talent. His guitar riff on Sunshine Superman is hard to surpass. Sometimes I get the feeling that there is some type of a huge lockdown grid hovering overhead with info, like discovering links never read by me but not unfamiliar.

An iconic 60s tune with that spaced out guitar and trippy vibe. Tripping now while listening to this rare jewel. Not something you hear on the radio anymore. Does stir up memories of my misspent youth.

@@markevan1__ You have to remember the greedy, grasping music industry was filled with, ah, "promoters" seeking to get get rich quick off these highly talented young musicians of the 60's. The problem with Donovan was he couldn't be pegged into one genre to be marketed. He was a talented unicorn, so the industry that LOVED the Beatles, didn't embrace him.
