Yes there is a distinction of abuse vs just having different believe, goals, morals etc. Doesn't mean it's not painful the latter, but there is a BIG difference from differance vs abuse. And sometimes things just change and you realize you didn't want what you thought you did at the time. Painful definitely. She's dead on DO NOT bring the kids into your differences. It's not on them it didn't work out. I was fortunate that my parents had that philosophy when they divorced when i was young. Never once did either of them trash the other to me or had any conflict in front of me. I of course found out the messy details as an adult, but i credit both of them how they handled it.
