TBH, and this is just my opinion. But it seems like she uses that personality as a comfort zone. You can see whenever she feels uncomfortable she uses her high pitched voice. Its like she understands that she is two different people but one is dealing with trama and the other is just a front to create a brand. The moment she decided to be a different person was in solitary and, it seems like that is where her second persona came from. She almost has to disassociate from herself. I don't think she will ever be whole herself until she feels secure enough to let the other persona go.

As a survivor of one of these institutions, one of the most hurtful and pernicious things they do is convince parents and children that their "treatment" was necessary or even life-saving. As someone who has worked against these programs for almost 15 years (alongside wonderful people like Katie from the documentary), I see this "the program saved your life" refrain over and over. It's dismissive and minimizes the abuse that people like Paris suffered. This abuses serious and can have lifelong effects. And I am laughing when with friends and family etc BUT inside I am crying and even dying. Compared to Paris I am a poor nobody, eventhough I am not poor per definition, but I have never ever told anyone about my abuse. I’ve made appointments, but I always cancel them just one hour before I’m supposed to be there. And Norway have completely free healthcare so it is not that who is stopping me. I .. I just can’t talk about it. I just can not do it. BUT, Paris’ docu did something to me. So I dared myself to write this comment but this is as far as I’ve ever gone. And my abuse started when I was 3 yrs old and the physical abuse ended a few years ago but the mentally abuse is still going on. Maybe that is why I am so scared. They tried to convince me that I was crazy for many years too and someone is still doing that to me despite all the documentation from the psychiatrists and other doctors. They just wont accept it, the fact that I am not sick. I really do not know why I am such an easy target for emotionally and mentally abuse, and used to be for physical abuse too. Sexual abuse was the worst. Of the physical abuse. Omg I have said way too much. I hope none of them and ESPECIALLY ‘HIM’ sees this!!!!!!! Omg😳😳😱😱😱🥺🥺 But go Paris💖💖💖💖💖💖💖👱🏻♀️💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

Anyone else telling you something else just trying to silence and manipulate you. Please don't believe them. Believe that you are worthy and capable of finding a way out of the darkness. It will take time but there is light at the end of tunnel! I don't know how old you are and if you still have to live in this dangerous situation, but if so, try to find a trusted person, like a friend or public institution. If you go to a therapist you don't need to talk about the abuse but the therapist might help you to find a save strategy for your way out. If you can, move even in a different town, cut contact and start therapy to understand nothing ever was your fault and you don't fall back into their tricky mind traps. Understand that the people you try to convince that you are not insane, are not interested in that truth. You can't win their game. It is their strategy trying to keep you as victim and continue the abuse. And go to self defense classes. Start boxing, Krav Maga or jiu jitsu. It not only helps for the body but for the mind, giving you the strength to fight for your life. And don't feel pushed to talk about your experience. You are ready when you are. First make sure to create a save environment for yourself. Sending you all love, strength and power! You will get out of this! Take care, beautiful soul!

@@moonstruck562 I'm 29 and when I was a kid, these sorts of treatment centers were rather popular amongst the more well off. It didn't happen at my school because no one could afford it, but it happened at other schools where there were people who could. What you have to understand is, these places preyed on these parents and basically sold themselves as THE PLACE where their kid was going to be fixed. Bad grades? Over sexed? Staying out to late? Send them to this retreat where they will be molded into a good kid. I actually think a lot of these parents believed that they were just sending their kids to, like, a military school or something.

WTF??? This is probably the most undermining thing Drew could have done - never ever EVER speak to someone else's trauma by saying "I went through something similar and it was actually "good" for me." Drew's experience is completely irrelevant to Paris's and all the other people speaking out. And Drew is entitled to her own interpretation of her experience (of course), but if anyone is watching this who went to one of these schools or experienced something similar, I'm hear to tell you that NO ONE deserves this kind of treatment (solitary confinement, naked solitary confinement, being abducted from your bed in the middle of the night, being put in a straitjacket, sexual harassment by guards - all of these are described in the documentary btw). NO ONE deserves this and especially NOT KIDS. If kids are behaving out of control with drugs and alcohol, it's almost always (read: always) due to deep trauma -- abuse, degradation and imprisonment are NEVER the right response. We live in a disgusting fascist society that normalizes punishment and absolutely horrific abuses.

Everyone’s experience is different and if hers wasn’t like the one Paris had and she feels it helped her she has the right to say it sure but HOW and WHEN she said it was wrong and definitely not the right time, if you call it an interview about someone’s hard experience do that not a debate. At least if she really wanted to say it she should have worded it differently and not say I’ve been throught that too so this time it’s not just a usual interview bla bla letting someone believe they fully understand and to later say “hey mine was good wouldn’t change it”. I do agree with your comment though don’t get me wrong. Just because she is ok with it and has come out of it with no trauma(she acted like it but who knows) doesn’t make it ok in general or for others.

At the end of the interview I have no idea why Paris was there if she was promoting something or what her experience was or even what her book or movie or whatever is about. Drew, My experiences were much different than yours. I was held for 13 months at 3 different places, 2 in Mexico and also in Jamaica. I suffered physical and emotional abuse. I was trafficked across international boundaries. I was denied food, water, and adequate shelter for months. My parents were swindled out of enough money to pay Ivy League tuition, and yet I was being held in a dog cage or locked in a gutted out bathroom hogtied. I was treated equivalent to a POW at Guantanomo Bay. You invalidated Paris's experience by implying that she only speaking out for the social media that follows. Believe me, our survivor community is one that I'm proud of, but not necessarily an easy path. We uphold and lift each other up, but we are bombarded with negativity from all angles. I hope you reflect on your own experience, and decide if your kidnapping and time in solitary confinement was actually beneficial, or if it harmed you in ways you haven't yet realized. Nobody deserves abuse. What our survivors endured, is considered cruel and unusual punishment in the penal system. Yet, it's deemed ok for a residential school for children. I was strong enough not to be broken, but there are broken pieces of me that I must pick up everyday. I now struggle with C-PTSD. I make it through each and every day anyway.

Drew Barrymore was exactly like the prettiest girl back in my High School days, BEFORE I used to envy her physical beauty, she had that type of skin where she looks like she's wearing makeup she never dealt with pimples or dark circles the entire years of high school, her teeth were already perfect for braces, while I was getting bullied during those years for how I used to look, my teeth still needed braces and also I started making efforts such as putting a natural looking makeup covering up my dark circles *SHE SHAMED ME FOR IT AND EXPRESSED HOW IRRITATED SHE IS SAYING I ONLY CARE HOW I LOOK LIKE* when she even sees me trying my best to study, just because she has a HIGH I.Q and I am struggling with my LOWER I.Q that no matter what kind of study I do even with a tutor I still fail, I felt like every student's nightmares were being thrown to me, she even ask "Don't you ever care about your studies even just a bit?" I only gave her the death stare and did not answered her at all. I had a very strict narcissistic mother, while she had the kind of mother everyone wishes to have, I'd compare her mom with Regina George's mom, while my mother like the one who stole/adopted Rapunzel. So the girl had issues with me having problems with my own toxic mom, you know how a matured sister acts when her little sister misbehaves that's how she acted towards me for having issues with my toxic mom but in a bad way for my case, *ALSO SHE MADE FUN OF HOW I USED TO LOOK SHE TOLD ME WHEN WE GO OUT OF SCHOOL I WILL BE THE BEAUTIFUL CENTER OF ATTENTION IN A MEAN AND SARCASTIC WAY WHILE SHE IS LAUGHING HARD* she did it several times THEN AFTER HIGHSCHOOL, we never all met during college, but after college WE HAD A REUINION, my highschool teacher contacted me from Facebook to make a speech about my experiences, so I was optimistic to be there because I HAD A SUCCESSFUL COSMETIC SURGERY THAT GOT ME INTO MANY MODELINGS AGENCIES AND BEAUTY PAGEANTS WERE VERY KIND AND CONSIDERATE EVEN IF I TOLD THEM IT WAS COSMETIC SURGERY THEY STILL OFFERED TO JOIN, I BECAME ALSO SUCCESSFUL WITH MY ART SKILLS WHERE I GOT PROMOTED, so as I arrive I saw the girl again I dealt with along with our other classmates chit-chatting they all look at my NAME TAG that we all have for that reunion, so when she got the hint that I got a plastic surgery her reaction towards me looks irritated, you know when a dumb person makes a mistake at work and how a boss reacts that's how she reacted.Especially when I told to the speech about it but in the middle to the end of my speech I finally made her FEEL GUILTY while the rest including those who used to bully me, cheered and clapped for me as a job well done.

I would much rather be told of a persons similar experience while I’m sharing my own because it makes one feel more like a person and more understood, rather than just examined and looked at like a specimen, an animal in a zoo or an alien. Was really disappointed to hear Drew say that even the kidnapping, solitary confinement, etc. she “wouldn’t change.” As someone who has experienced these programs firsthand, I feel that really undermines the message here. Those things are abusive. Why would you condone them? That message is damaging :( Also to ask an abuse survivor what the positive takeaway was from their abuse.... I can’t comprehend why that would even be a question. These places don’t “save our lives.” I personally think Drew needs to process her own experiences and address the abuse that took place, because it seems like she’s still trying to excuse or justify the abuse, and that’s really counterproductive for raising the type of awareness that needs to occur to achieve real reform for the troubled teen industry.
@jessicaferraro41144 жыл бұрын
I was very disappointed and concerned about this conversation too. In poking around, though, I’m not sure Drew was in the same kind of program at all-I understand it was a psych ward, so it really comes across so poorly that they assume they had the same kinds of experiences, with the resultant minimization of Paris’s story. I also think Drew is in denial about parts of her experiences-solitary confinement and kidnapping are hands-down abusive and traumatizing, regardless of the rest of the environment and experience. But the core of what Paris is revealing is these tactics to destroy identity and create traumatized compliance, along with the accompanying longstanding consequences. I too hope people will dig deeper and see through this

They should have explored more the fact that Paris was actually abused in that camp. She was forcefully given drugs, there was physical and sexual abuse. Other women confirmed these practices were taking place in that camp. They are equally traumatised by it. Not that Paris needed this 'evidence' to validate her feelings, but still. This experience cannot be compared with Drew's who does not detail such abuse. There is a big difference between tough love and abuse. I just found this discussion a bit superficial. Like the fact that Drew compared it to her experience and said that the practices saved her life... I was shocked. I wonder if there is more, I only saw this short clip.

Wild guess would be because she’s possibly catering to her demographic who are likely moms that blame their kids instead of taking responsibility for their actions and her investors who benefit financially from places like Provo existing I feel like whatever it is she’s clearly had it drilled in her head that Paris is just a spoiled money hungry brat whether she actually believes it or is pandering I obviously couldn’t say. She comes off as very judgmental, critical, and skeptical of Paris’ reality but I also believe she has internalized a lot resentment towards herself based on her behavior that caused her to be in one of those facilities herself considering how in the timeline of our society the difference in how we generally tend to acknowledge and respond to mental health has only very recently come to the forefront of our conversations particularly in regards to things like compassion, understanding, empathy, and even just awareness.

Paris has always been brilliant women. Masking herself as a heiress because people accepted that part about her. and who doesn't need to be accepted? All while experiencing trauma simultaneously that's being treated as invalid. This has potential to open your eyes to people's values and perceptions. Perhaps change the pitch of your voice to cope. Its not a great tactic because its not universally effective. But some people do that as a way to help an emotionally distressed person to pull themselves out of their own head and pain for a moment. It works for me, so its natural when i do it out of good nature to attempt to help the person. Yes it backfires! Because it doesnt work for everyone. Yes the person taking that approach will have to learn. But i promise u its out of kindness and concern rather than anything else. If it were out of anything else you wouldnt see an emotionally intelligent, empathetic and compassionate person surrounding that behaviour. But we do , because Drew is those things. So its a mistep in tactics on her part but its very very unlikely to be out of disconcern or neglect or taking things for granted.

Not trying to sound like a jerk here, but I don’t think interviewing is something Drew should continue doing. Her presentation of the questions were awkwardly aggressive. Someone used the term cringey and I agree. Most importantly, when you interview someone, they’re your guest and they’re there to be in the spotlight. Drew was trying to share that spotlight and it felt like she was using Paris, which is exactly what Paris said she feared in making friends with anyone. I did NOT like this interview. I have nothing against Drew, but it is quite apparent she is inexperienced with being an interviewer, as the interview seemed a bit scattered, so I'm also wondering if if it was edited (poorly). It lacked a contextualizing introduction, and from the first question Drew asks, it appears she did not fully watch the documentary. If her questions were for the viewers who might not have seen it, some sort of introduction or context is still very important to help set the tone of the interview. I think thats part of why the interview felt awkward and why many people are saying Drew focused more on herself than Paris. If you want to connect to someone through shared experiences, you need to first be an active listener, and part of that is often by acknowledging, and including follow up questions to what the interviewee says. Drew says this interview will be different from others Paris' has been through since the film was released, saying that there won't be a disconnect since she has been where Paris was. She lists some of the horrible things they both went through, but then later on almost invalidates Paris and other survivors while putting in her own experiences, even saying I have to tell you, the people at my place were really good", and goes on to basically say she deserved to be there for being a rebellious kid. She closes that statement by saying it was a good thing for her in the end, and you can see Paris growing more tired by the time Drew asked if it "fixed something" for her. It seemed a bit insensitive given the way she led up to the question; if she had instead framed it in line with the documentary, where Paris said SHE made herself stronger IN those places, not that those places were good for her.

the most weird thing of it all, is that they know each other since they were kids. Drew seemed like it was the first time meeting Paris. And yes you could see how Paris seemed to think "seriously?" it was very disrespectful to Paris's pain about her experience.

It's so nice to feel Paris's heart. It's huge.

Kinda messed up for Drew to be like, "yes the exact same traumatic thing happened to me... I wouldn't change any of it."

I know right I was thinking "wtf Drew did you really just say that you moron!?"

Different folks different strokes. Some people go to prison and come out of it improved. Also they went to different correctional institutions. I think Paris was sent to a really abusive one.

Trauma and tragedy teach us important things. Obviously, a person would not choose such things. However, life brings suffering . Her comment reflects having grown despite hardship. Criticisms is not warranted.

Drew Barrymore seems to have a little bit of deprogramming left to do as well.

this is awful. she is being dismissive, minimizing what paris went through and how she feels about it, and somehow twisted it making it about her. i feel so sorry for paris having to go through it.
