Though I am an avid supporter of EVs, I have always thought the technology wouldn't do so well in proper Canadian winters. There may be a lot of EV reviews but very few of them take place during the harsh cold months that I am exposed to. I wanted to find out how expectations would change the driving style of an EV and if something would surface that I hadn't considered beforehand. The Ford Mustang Mach-E was provided for two weeks when we faced an extreme weather warning for one of those weeks, but these extreme weather warnings reliably occur 2 or 3 times a year. Thank you very much Ford Canada for making this review possible and thanks to you for watching!

Thanks for stopping by for todays video! Maybe you learnt something new, or maybe you didn't. I do hope in years to come I will be able to try out more EVs during this time of year so I can compare products in these conditions - Max

Great review!! I also would like to eventually buy an EV. You brought up many great points I’ve never heard on any other reviewers sites.

Would you say the car produces enough heat to keep you comfortable in - 10 to -15c temps? Those are thee "normal" lows in my parts of Canada in the winter.

You plugged the Mach E on level 1 charger and still lost 40km overnight? Did I hear that right?

My work day involves stops at about 6 to 8 job sites over 8 hours, warming the cabin up each time from below 0. Will I be pleased switching to electric cars when Canada bans new gasoline car sales or will I be out of a job? I wonder what will happen. So much anxiety between now and then I might die from range anxiety before actually getting into one.

What is the range in winter

Thanks for this video, which is much needed to put EV in the context of harsh Canadian winters. I share your concern about the coming ban of non-EV in a couple of year's time. I think it is madness. I have been planning on getting into RVing, but if the ban comes to pass, I will be forced to buy a one-ton truck to make sure I have enough range, so that I don't have to stop to recharge every couple of hours, even though the RV that I plan to buy can be comfortably towed by a 1/2 ton. If the charge is billed based on time, then this will be a very painful experience. I don't think leasing an EV is going to be any cheaper. For the reason of battery degradation, the lease-end value will also be lowered, resulting in higher depreciation and therefore higher payment amounts.

valid concern, but I would imagine that in the time it take for the non-EV ban, EV charging gets good and fast enough that it would essentially be like filling up gas at a gas station

That is something EV advocates never talk about. The range is reduced significantly in winter. The technology is not ready for prime time in Canada. They also don’t mention that fast charging shortens the battery life significantly more than charging from a 120v outlet. If this is the best EVs offer than it looks like the future in car sales will be leasing. Noone wants to be stuck with an EV with a dying battery after a few years.

Actually a lot of people do, especially in EV forums. While heat pumps can help, solid state batteries will help even more and we’re not too far off on commercializing solid state batteries. The thing is, lithium ion batteries are not the set solution for EVs and in fact, we’re trying to move away from them. It’s a temporary solution and as we advance battery technology, solid state batteries will give EVs much much longer ranges and can handle cold a lot better.

Actually lots of people talk about winter impact on range, but not many can specify how much the impact is exactly. I have recently bought an EV and have calculated the required range I need the car to have based on the maximum expected daily distance I want to be able to travel without charging on a cold winter day, which I have set to twice the size of the area I serve customers in for my business. This way I expect to be able to drive my EV for a full day in winter and charge every night, while in summer I can perhaps charge every other night. In the occasional field trip, it means I will be able to drive 2-2,5 hours in between charges, which is matching advised breaks to remain fresh behind the wheel

@@eugene__eugene I’ve read on average range is reduced by 25% in very cold weather. EV owners in the Great White North can comment..

Update from the future: Fords will now work on the Tesla network. Personally, I would own one in a heartbeat. I would not own two, though. If I were on the prairies, forget it. Too cold, too far between drives, too little infrastructure. Also, I don't think any driving is legal to do hands free. The vehicle manufacturer maay say you can, but check the laws where you drive. You are still responsible for the vehicle.

At present, EVs do not lower pollution. They only change the time and place the pollution takes place.

That's not true at all, and there's plenty of reputable studies showing otherwise for the average number of miles driven over the average life of the car. You people can keep on spreading misinformation but it will never change facts.

@@BanBiofuels okay I probably shouldn't have used that term but I get so tired of the anti-ev crowd. let's just put it this way once you drive an EV you definitely do not want to go back to ice vehicles... well at least probably about 90% don't want to.

@@BanBiofuels and I agree that EVs in the current state aren't ideal for every situation but for about 60% of the population having at least one of your vehicles an EV would be preferred, barring up front price ability and even that's becoming a non-issue with the bolt EV and the Chevy equinox etc coming out. and notice I said up front there because long-term for most people if they drive a decent amount the EV will definitely have lower cost compared to a similarly sized vehicle.

@@nishiki393 I've written my thesis about EVs, and it was accepted, and the guy who graded it, got an ev, fought his HOA for a charger and is the only one, but is aware they're in no way clean. Those just are comfortable and that is it. if you go through the every single stage of how a an EV is possible to be made, those are terrible for the planet. All new cars are, but it's 2-3 times worse for the planet if it's got the batteries made in any of the technologies available today, and the most problems will only become apparent in the next 10 to 15 years, but already are an issue in many places, destroyed many ecosystems, killed many people in the process and their livelihoods. Won't share the piece as it's identifable, but it was accepted at one of Europes top 10 economy uni's, and it's all about money here, and somehow it was accepted. I will get an EV myself, but I would recommend doing some factual research and read pages long things with actual data in them, see photos, videos. Articles and videos do nothing and it's hard to find any valuable information, lot's of things are removed from internet, which is possible, and it is false to say nothing ever goes off internet, especially when a country would loose money on it and it can control internet like countries in south america or china can.
