The highlander meta is actually pretty much anything except the scorch. Because the other team is guaranteed to have a pyro all they really have to do to counter it is use the manmelter and at that point you're feeding the enemy pyro free crits. Shotguns see a lot of use in highlander, particularly the panic attack, as pyro basically plays the role of a bodyguard to the support classes.

True however the Scorch Shot wasn't banned until UGC Season 27 and ELTF2 Season 16 both around 2018. They been playing with the Scorch Shot for long time without any complaints until recent years.

I see almost all highlander pyros use degreaser + detonator, sometimes switching to shotgun/panic attack.

To be honest the Detonator is pretty much just an upgrade to the scorch shot. The only problem is that the scorch shot is so much easier to use. The detonator's firework dissolves upon hitting something, however it gives you better mobility (higher jump height in comparison to the scorch shot), and allows you to control when the firework explodes by pressing right click. Vorobey made a video of himself playing with only the detonator and scorch shot. He found that he had a higher DPM (damage per minute) with the detonator. The only problem is that the Scorch shot is just so much easier to use. Just spam it down a choke point and let them burn.

that is true but the det require some skill while the scorch shot does not. and det is mostly use for mobility and cc not just to spam it, something that Vorobey completely ignores. yes probably if the mayority of prople using det were just spamming it, it would get more hate

Ahhh you can spam anything drop a chokepoint. Rockets, nades, stickies even the Detonator... It really ain't that hard. That one of reason why they are chokepoints. Funny enough if one person takes the hit while everyone still rushes forward, there would be less damage spread because you need to be dallying around the falling flare to get hit.

The Scorch Shot is like the Loose Cannon. Both can be used for mobility Both are weapons commonly used to spam down a choke Both are mainly targeted at large groups Both hit the enemy in the head, bounce off of them, explode, and deal mini-crits And both are best paired with weapons that people despise (Quickiebomb Launcher for the Loose Cannon, Phlogistonator for the Scorch Shot) The difference being the Loose Cannon is actually fun and respectable, while the Scorch Shot is infuriating and diabolical

Scorch Shot barely gets you anywhere other than a small jump or up a crate. If you really want mobility use the Detonator. I always question if actually have to use the Loose Cannon for mobility ... it does way too much damage to self to be taken a mobility Have you been playing this game? Everything gets spam down chokes, rockets nades, stickies, arrows, bullets, etc. Solider and Demo rack up kills from that Again similar to the chokes, who does s You only Double Donk multiple people if they are all hit by the same cannon before exploding. Scorch Shot targets would need to be on fire already, direct hits will only ignite the initial target and the falling flare will mini-crit anyone who is already on fire. It is easy to escape this falling flare if the target is already moving and doesn't backpedal into the flare. If you aren't moving well the knockback from the initial hit is only going to bounce you up instead of pushing you forward or back if you were (depends on your movements). Leaving you susceptible to the falling flare. People hate Phlog even when it is super easy to counter, which is super telling. When did people start hating the Quickiebomb Launcher? Putting feeling into weapons much...All this nonsense about "this is more fun & respectable vs that which is infuriating and diabolical" is entirely subjective and a joke. It would have you had laughed years ago because it had no true bearing on the game and still doesn't. If it does somehow please elaborate on how? There was a time when some also people hate vocally hated the Loose Cannon, especially in comp. Look it up, I even give your first search with "kadius loose cannon"

Yes, I have been playing this game, and the Scorch Shot and Loose Cannon are perhaps most effective when spammed down chokes, seeing as they're extremely good at holding people back My point about them being very effective in large groups also still stands And people hate the Quickiebomb Launcher because they see it as the "Stickyspam" gun rather than see it for it's actual use. And it's not so much about emotions, moreso about balance. The Loose Cannon is centered around timing in both the damage and crowd control department as well as the utility and mobility department and is in my opinion the best Demoman primary. Maybe it was an infuriating weapon before, but now it's fair and balanced yet still effective side grade, especially when paired with the Quickiebomb Launcher or Tide Turner.

The only reason I would ever use the scorch shot is when the teams are incredibly unbalanced and my team is getting pushed back very very hard however if we could sustain a point after like 4 minutes I'd usually switch to the detonator as, in my opinion its a lot more fun to use and actually makes the enemy team not hate you

If you want to play the Scorch Shot, a good way to try it is to play a bit with the Detonator first, just so you can see the extreme difference beteren the two balance wise. You can also try to abuse the knockback in tandem with the Dragon's Fury, as two shots and both hits from the flare can kill anything below 175 that isnt fire resistant in seconds

It seems like you're new to the Scorch Shot and maybe the game as a whole but most of the hate for the Scorch Shot is exaggerated from years of stimgiazing Pyro. Like "It has the blast radius of the Beggars Bazooka"... Ah not really Beggars is still slightly bigger by 7 Hu (hammer units), but wouldn't have been easier just to say the Scorch Shot has the same blast radius as the Detonator? .... Yea, since all flareguns almost practically the same but since we hate the Scorch Shot gotta play up how big the radius is. The Scorch Shot originally dropped in 2012 PyroMania update. It services way to heckle, harass, and control the enemy. However, it is seen as weak for a long time until 2015 Gun Mettle, where both Detonator and the Scorch Shot were buffed from 90ish Hu to 110 Hu and their current day stats. Although the Detonator and Scorch Shot share similar qualities, Detonator was always made with the purpose of mobility. On the other hand, the Scorch Shot during Gun Mettle randomly gained the ability to jump (at the Detonator level) probably due to its increased knockback. This was quickly fixed the -35% self jump force stats (people don't know this because they don't care or never play before 2015). From that time Scorch Shot was seen as a reasonable sidegrade, in later years with some folks say "if you cant aim use the Scorch Shot". How it wasn't until a few years, after 2017 Jungle Inferno ( an update that changed many things about Pyro, except it flare guns) that the Scorch Shot started to call OP/Evil, etc. (There was a shotgun called the Reverse Shooter that was formerly notorious on Pyro, that was nerfed in Jungle Inferno. Also, Airblast was changed making it harder for Pyroes who were used to shooting predictable targets. This made combos with the Flaregun harder. All in all a lot of things got changed so people opted for an easier choice that spreads around damage but, in honestly from years of usage, it takes way more time to secure kills with the Scorch Shot. Even, the complaints are mostly from another controversial weapon pair in the Phlog. Phlog has always been hated from day 1 (Smissass 2011) for its simple gameplay and the Scorch became a popular weapon to pair with it ) I'm making this short but if you need proof I can provide more. Lastly, weapon stereotyping is stupid. Also, people who usually complain and die to the Scorch Shot: 1) Don't move 2) Don't pay attention to the surrounding (Sniper scoped in or blindly walk down a Chokepoint that was being spammed by everyone) 3) Waste time 4) Already low on health (Together the initial hit and falling flare can only do 46 damage, the rest afterburn which take time. It takes 11.5 secs to even a 125-health class. Enough time to shot once or twice then bail for some healing) 4) Don't think Pyro should do much of anything in the game.

Honestly though when there’s a competent sniper on the other team with one (usually more) pocket medics afking with bullet vaccinator, the scorch shot is like the only thing that’ll let your team even attempt to move up if there isn’t a good way for a spy to get behind him.

the thing is, the scorch looses a lot of efficency when you have to shoot from a lower position. the only thing that is overly annoying is the range of the blast on not-hit, and maybe reduce the duration of afterburn on hit (both for full duration, single for half) everything else is just bitching that the function of a weapon is counterproductive to you defeating the enemy the damage itself is almost pathetic, and unless the enemy team lets you focus, it's nto what will bring home the kills, it gets heavily countered by any medigun and even the amputator, and an enemy pyro with a manmelter is gonna CASTIGATE your team, unless you have a capable vaccinator medic to cover your ass of course, some maps are more chokes that makes it work better, but that's like blaming the map for having long line and favouriting the L&L generally, the weapon is more effective in pubs, but at long as there's the bare minimum of oordination, it's just an average weapon, even somewhat underwhelming

Honestly, my way to balance out the Scorch shot is -No Random Crits -20% Slower Projectile Speed -Reduced ammo to only 6 And maybe another one is... -Afterburn is determined by the distance Example : if you hit a scorch shot really close to someone, there will be 10 seconds of afterburn if you hit someone from the other side of the map, it will deal only 4 seconds of afterburn.

It's just annoying weapon, in comparison to detonator, it's downgrade in term of setting people on fire and overall damage. If you want to spam and flank, use detonator. If you want to have high raw damage output, use panic attack. If you want to combo and quickly finish enemies, use flare gun. Scorch shot is just crutch for people, who suck at timing manual detonation with detonator or just think, that detonator is just some funny jumpy tool, when it's strongest at spamming. If you ask about meta, most used loadout for highlander pyro is: degreaser/stock flamethrowe, detonator/panic attack/stock shotgun, powerjack (sometimes homewrecker for helping engies).

8:43 twas why fire is so janky, blast damage should be equally as janky against fire, any incoming explosion damage friendly or foe, should remove afterburn, giving another support element to explosive classes. And thus a penalty to reflected rockets. Since they already do so much damage. Because realistically explosions are very effective at putting out fires, since compression around a radius versus a fire, puts it out.

although i prefer to use the stock shotgun for pyro, i definitely enjoy switching to the scorch shot when there is a sniper being a bit of a dick, they hate it so much but unless they are using the danger shield, it keeps them off my teammates. to be honest, if i had to change the gun, it shouldn't hit with max afterburn, and it shouldn't stunlock.

For comboing use flare gun. I'd argue, that scorch shot is way worse then all of these, it's just annoying and braindead, but once pyro knows how to play, these weapons are better. Also pretty much every highlander player uses detonator from what i see.

Scorch shot is borked, but what other option does the Pyro have that valve didn't deem worthy of taking away or nerfing, either directly or indirectly? Afterburn... Everyone and Scout's mom can get rid of it pretty easily at this point. before we got all these unlocks, that shit was scary when all you had was the medic, dispensers, the odd water hazard on some maps and health packs to remove the fire. We used to be the kings of melee with the axetinguisher, but between it being nerfed the fuck to hell and airblast changes over time, that's the old puff and sting is more of gimick then a viable playstyle. it still sort of exists with flarepunching, but the old puff, lock with airblast and then murder with axe was the bomb. I'm not saying they were wrong with the airblast changes, the old stun was crazy, i'm just saying if you give me a toy, expect me to play and use it. they nerfed the reserve shooter's interaction with airblasts, so again: one more version of combo pyro is a no go. Roaming/flanking Pyro is always a guessing game. Good roaming scouts, demos and soldiers will probably murder you and they all out-movement option you. I love my backburner, but the radius to get those crits on the off-chance you can get behind the enemy isn't the best and because you need to get rid of your shotty/flare to get the jetpack for that extra mobility means you're sacrificing mid-range and long-range combat options to get mobility. Phlog is Phlog. Dragon's Fury is an interesting sidegrade to flamethrower as it rewards at this point pyro is basically just stuck playing defense: airblasting uber'd targets from their medic, reflecting projectiles away from people who actually matter to the team or holding a point by aggressively shoving the enemy team off it with a compressed air blast. Or teaming up with an engie and doing a pybro. That and spychecking, but everyone should be doing that to some extent anyways. no harm in shooting an ally with your secondary if you're not in combat. let us pyros scan the open areas with fire. Would nerfing the scorch shot help the overall health of the game? Quite possibly, but it's also more reason to not play Pyro.

@@babaskarma1981 i think it is that hated cuz of it's incredibly low skill floor, but at the other hand, if you are really focused on using any other pyro secondary (except maybe reserve shooter), then you are gonna be better with it then with scorchshot. Shotgun? Imo best secondary for pyro. Flare gun? If you get good, you're incredibly powerful. Detonator? Better scorchshit if aimed well. Mannmelter? Very good at long ranges and if you're actively extinguishing your teammates with it, you're gonna shred.

Scorch shot is so versatile i love it. I wouldn't mind the damage being nerfed. The mini jump, the long range spy check, the stunlock, the aoe. I mainly use it as a "Fuck you, go away." Or "Fuck you, get over here." "Fuck you, go away." Stunlocking an enemy chasing me allows me to get away, the aoe and afterburn usually makes enemies want to go away. "Fuck you, get over here." The stunlock allows me to get close to the target that was just outside of my range. The aoe allows me to spycheck at range. I also love using the dragons fury and scorch shot is a good combo with it. So yeah, I'm fine with nerfing the scorch shot's damage but not the versatility Oh yeah and there's also "Fuck you" because fuck you sniper. In an unbalanced game, sniper on the winning team is just the nail on the coffin when they are on defense. Your only hope of killing them is countersniping.

I will argue the Scorch Shot is fair as long as sniper and spy exist. But it really isn't that op since it really doesn't get kills. Also its really fun to use to mess with snipers. Also as a Pyro main it kind of is a meta but not really, its best use it to deal with snipers really harassing your team; since if an enemy pyro gets close or anyone with any kind of fire resistance you're pretty much screwed, so the shotgun is more reliable overall.
