In this episode of the Dungeon Dive, I discuss the top 10 adventure board games, with a new number one. Although, it looks like I failed to ever record a video with my old number one, so the new number one may not really matter. LOL! But rest assured, at one point on this list that I was keeping on my computer, there was a different number one. :) Enjoy!

@@alexany4619 I for one hate the tile flipping resolution mechanic of Runebound 3e. Runebound 2e uses a d20 (or is it 2d10, I forget now. Between Runebound 1e and Runebound 2e, one game used 1d20 and the other used 2d10) for resolution, so its very familiar to anyone who's played /that/ fantasy roleplaying game. You roll the die, add the modifier, and try to hit a target number. Runebound 2e still uses the terrain dice for movement, but in 2e it is a little more difficult. The terrain spaces in 2e are smaller so it takes a little longer to get across the board and it feels like a serious challenge sometimes if you are playing a timed game. Also, tons of expansions and decks and interesting magic items and spells. 3e just feels like "blah" in comparison. It doesn't really punch.

By the way, I am very grateful to you for sharing your very well informed comments on so many games on this genre, because I don't have the time and space (both physical and mantal) to play as many games nowadays. This helps me decide what games are really worth my time, effort and shelf space. Thanks to you I have found some amazing games on the past few years. Keep up the good work and keep your independence, it really does make a difference from other bigger KZbin boardgaming channels which are not specialized in anything and work more for the publishers than for their viewers or their passions.

Great list, thank you for putting it together for us. Arkham 2nd Ed. is easily one of my favorite games (regardless of genre) and Touch of Evil isn't far behind. But the real reason I watch lists like this is to be exposed to games that I don't already know about. I ordered Iron Helm after watching your Dungeon Crawler top 10 and I never would have known it existed without you. There are a couple on this list that I'm going to be looking into (Lands of Galzyr is particularly enticing) and whether I end up buying them or not, I'm glad to have them pointed out for consideration. Hello Daniel, This is an excellent list that you offer us. I bought Hexplore It FOA for myself and "Fallen Land" is in my future purchases. I thought there might be "folklore" but it's more of a campaign game and rather linear but the publisher really missed out on a great opportunity by not supporting the creation kit they have edited with. There could have been a huge community around to develop this game. There is also SoB, but here we are straddling two worlds but it offers a great opportunity to create your own adventures and with Hexcrawl we have a very wide range of what the game system can offer. But you get it probably classified more in the DC genre.

I can't even imagine trying to compile a list like this - you're doing yeoman's work here! What a great mix of older classics and new titles as well. This is how "Top 10" lists should look. The way you describe your #1 is how I feel about Earthborne Rangers. Adventuring around the game world and the actual card mechanics feel like the the next generation of what a deck-based card game can be.

I will be honest, the let's plays I've watched lately have left me feeling totally flat about the game. LOL. I can't believe the game starts off with having the players deliver some biscuits. LOL! I hope there's more to do than just deliver stuff. :) I don't think the game makes a very good first impression, but I'm curious.
@the_Mike_d7 ай бұрын
@@TheDungeonDive I think they messed up the intro a bit - they tried being creative with how you create a "character" and they show you how to play, but it's a rather confusing and doesn't quite work. That's one of the things they're fixing with the new printing, so I'm hopeful it comes across better. But yes, it's not at all what you'd think from other deck builders (like Arkham or Marvel) - it's more about exploring and interacting with the environment, or sometimes just hanging back and influencing how the environment unfolds. I genuinely find it relaxing to play - it's a new experience for me. At the risk of sounding like a cultist, I am not sure it's something you can "feel" from watching it. Instead, it's pretty cool to experience the interesting way that cards interact or seeing how they interact differently based on what's happening. But yeah - delivering biscuits. 180 degrees different than dodging nonstop nightmares in Arkham Horror. : )

Almost every game I cover on the channel exists in that space between RPG and board and board game, and that's something I talk about A LOT! :) As a matter of fact, games like Arkham Horror and Mertwig's Maze were specifically made by their designers to offer up an RPG-lite experience, but with the rules of a board game. You absolutely cannot go wrong if that's what your looking for with any single game on this list. All will totally satisfy!

Nice list. I've played them all except for your #1 Paupers Ladder. So now I'm going to have to track that down. I've been thinking alot about Combat Systems. Its not an issue for a solo player but add two more gamers and it takes forever.

Over time this has become my personal favorite genre, which I mostly play solo but occasionally enjoy with a group. I enjoy the wider scope of the narrative, and that it relies on the player to stitch that narrative together themselves. The latter can happen in dungeon crawls as well, but it's mostly tied to the turn-by-turn combat events, so the "stitching" is just smaller scale or more "zoomed in" by default, and it also tends to be scripted a bit more. The narratives in adventure games seem to have more variety & length. The genre also seems to be more open to unusual settings and characters, whereas dungeon crawls seem to fall back to the more basic Tolkien or contemporary D&D tropes.

A user named GwynHawk put a nice little Character Advancement list together on the BGG Files page for LoG that adds a pinch of leveling-up to your character/game over time without making them too overpowered. Do you have any thoughts on Agemonia (campaign) or Euthia (one-off scenarios)? Euthia is a bit of a monster in terms of table space and setup. I've seen some others mention Earthborn Rangers, which I also really like, and sounds like you backed the 2nd printing, so enjoy that. Glad to see your channel growing as well! Explore the channel! That's what it's here for.

Really nice video! I'm glad to find your channel. Many of these games are on my shelves and I love playing them. But you also mention many that I have never even heard of and that intrigue me greatly. My favorite game was missed from your Flying Frog list, which is Last night On Earth.... but I forgive you! 😄I also love adventure games and just cooperative games in general. You noted that you have moved to the PNW. Are you still there (here)? Obviously I live there as well.
@TheDungeonDive7 ай бұрын
Thanks! I don't think I'd consider Last Night an adventure game. For me, it's more of a skirmish game. I'll be making an episode on that soon, covering some of the fan made solo rules!

Nice list, and I clearly NEED Pauper's Ladder. I also like the rules for Runebound 3rd more than 2nd, but the expansions on 2 are a LOT more interesting. Euthia would make my list, as well as Prophecy. I also suspect that Dragons Down will land in my top 3. I've always desperately wanted to like Magic Realm, but the game is still far too fiddly and complex. Every change in Dragons Down looks SO good. Galzyr is a game that really should be on a lot of lists. I still prefer Tales of the Arabian Nights (which would be at the top of my list). Galzyr adds SO much to that style of game.
@TheDungeonDive7 ай бұрын
I’m also looking forward to Dragons Down!

Tales of the Arabian Nights is my, pour a beer and sit down for a fun/random choose-your-own-adventure game. I also love Lands of Galzyr and the amount of content there is in that digital book, as well as the fact that the landscape changes over time. Super pumped to see how Tales of the Arthurian Knights turns out at the end of this year!

Im an Arthurian nut too. What have you got into? Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy, is interesting, I have a soft spot for Steinbeck's The Acts, The Penguin two volume L'Mort is very solid, Whites Once and future King I think is a true classic, Howard Pyle too, even Bernard Cowell efforts are interesting I prefer The Grail Quest to Warlords but worth a look in if somewhat dry at times.

Thanks for the recs! Right now I am working my way through The Great Book of King Arthur, by John Matthews, illustrated by John Howe! In my research I read that this is the best of the modern versions.

Not that kind of video. This is a talking head video. For more details, search the channel, and I've got insanely detailed videos for most of the games featured. Not sure. Haven’t really thought of it in top 10 terms. It’s very good. My favorite game of 2024. Can’t go wrong with it. I don’t keep an on going list of rankings. Every time I rank games, it’s totally spur of the moment.

Nope! I’ve played many hundreds of adventure games, so picking 10 is super hard, and that doesn’t mean that there aren’t other amazing games. Remember, this my informed opinion, not yours.

Also, Feudum isn’t an adventure game based on how I define the genre. It’s a euro economic game.

Hi Daniel. I was going to disagree with you about Hexplore It: VotDK, but then you addressed my big issue with the game. which is that some characters are totally OP and break the game, while others can be weak. My game group is 5 players, and both times we played this, 2-3 players took over all the killing duties and the 2 weaker characters sat in the back seat and just "Defended" on their turns.
@TheDungeonDive7 ай бұрын
Oh man, I can't even imagine playing this with 5 players! That sounds like hell to me. :) It's long enough solo! For me, these games are 100% solo games, or maybe 2 players, MAYBE 3...but that would be pushing it. What do other players even do when playing? There's really nothing for a group of players to decide on. How long do 5 players games last?
@n4tune87 ай бұрын
I think the 'problem' with Hexplore It is that the numbers get too big at some point. Like the Brute and Berserker can deal 80+ damage per round by the time you reach the Dead King. I house rule that stats increases are limited to gear upgrades, apart from quest rewards and boss single rewards; the power up cards just give you the right to purchase that specific gear upgrade in a city (you need both the right power up card and gold).

So does Fallen Land, and it's a much better game than Waste Knights. You actually have the time to have fun in Fallen Land, and you aren't rushing a timer to get things done.

Wonderful list! Thanks for sharing the video. I own some of them and couldn't agree more. Have you tried "The Isofarian Guard" and "Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood"? Would you consider them adventure games?
@TheDungeonDive6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I don’t play many long campaign games, so those two aren’t really for me. I had Oathsworn for a bit, and it was ok. A little too much time spent reading for me. But very well made. I don’t have enough room for Isofarian guard in my room or on my table. :)

@@TheDungeonDive Thanks for your thoughts. Long campaign games need a huge commitment and not many people are willing to invest that much time on them. Myself sometimes get a bit tired but the accomplishment of ending a well written campaign with character progression, good fights and exploration are what I consider a top tier adventure game. As for the space, I totally understand. I live in Japan and space is a huge problem.
