I have conducted anchoring tests of SHHP type anchors (IACS classification of your anchor) for use on 150 foot patrol boats in both sand and mud bottoms. These types of anchor are very capable and prove to hold far more load than was required. Some of the testing looked at all chain rode versus a chain leader and rope. There is minimal difference between the two systems. We chose to use a chain leader and double braid nylon as the anchor rode, saving considerable weight located in the bow. The double braid rope is as strong (wet strength) as the chain and provides great shock reduction on the anchoring system. The US NAVY has a Design Data Sheet (DDS) that provides a method to calculate the load on the system in wind and current.

Congratulations on the new junior inspector. As all men do when they cut a hole in their boat. We look calm and collected on the outside looking like we are contemplating the world. What we have done. like a duck looking calm above the water underneath all the action is happening. We men and thinking “oh my god, oh my god what have I done!” Over and over again for about 5-10 minutes then all is right with the world.

A thought for a video idea since you all are spending a lot of time with family stuff a quick easy video would be to go through and show what brands of products you like to use, peel ply, fiberglass etc, even providing links to get stuff in the description, if you had those with affiliate links I am sure you would make some money from it.

@martincrick21587 ай бұрын
Interesting stage of the project. Like the idea of keeping the chain from under foot and getting the weight as far back as possible. Couple of things to think about. 1) The movement of the chain is going to be very abrasive along the channel. Is the single layer of glass bonding the channel to the deck going to withstand that? 2) On my boat, the windlass is mounted on deck and straddles the bulkhead at the back of the chain locker. This means the chain gypsy on deck and the motor below it are aft of the bulkhead. The hawse hole for the chain is forward of the bulkhead. The motor is in a locker accessible only from the fore cabin - inside the dry portion of the boat. This means water coming off the chain never goes anywhere near the motor. The motor is still working 31 years after the boat was built. You might want to think about how to separate the electric bits of your windlass from the wet chain!
@LNM00007 ай бұрын
And re #1 if the chain goes over a right angle edge in/out the boat on its down/up journey it will cause some proper mischief to that edge... Some stainless lining and a chain wheel pulley block don't know the name of for the 90° transition point through the deck ?

When the anchor comes through the slot in the bow sprit it often slams into the side of the slot on the way through. I have this problem on my yacht. It leads to a lot of chipping in the sides of the slot. I suggest lining the sides of the slot with thin sheets of stainless for protection.

4:10 Here is a thought: How about selling pieces such as this one to raise money for the project? There must be people out there (or here) who would love to own and display a fragment of the boat Mike Plant sailed the Vendée Globe in 1989, and a simple piece like this can be easily reproduced in the garage. Who knows, perhaps if you guys auction occasional pieces removed from the boat, like the stainless chainplates, or any other interesting flotsam that must be on a pile in your yard... how about that keel!?... ; ⁰ )

Glad you guys had a little break to get into the family routine. The channel for the windless looks awesome, I am just wondering why it was necessary to open the entire channel, I know you need to get access to the channel if something gets stuck or just for inspection but would it not have been better to make two shorter access holes? My guess is that this will stay closed more often than being open. I am sure there is a perfectly good reason I would love to understand why. You can of course drop some footage of the family time into the video in the future, would be so awesome to see the little sailor and watch the progress on these two huge projects ... keep the videos coming.

Thanks for all the videos. I’d be interested in hearing more about how the new weight distribution impacts other parts of the boat, such as sail size, mast height, etc.. Also, the old water ballast tanks had a fixed amount of water all the time, correct? Now that you’re using them for fresh water, the weight will change as the water is used. Is that negligible now that the tanks are smaller, or is it all offset by the new keel design? 😊

I've been wondering about a couple of things regarding your anchor and chain solution. I know I am lacking a lot of information regarding the reasoning behind the design but here are my observations. First, the way you have designed the anchor placement and rode channel it seems like it might be awkward to manage the anchor since it is always stowed, I think, under the bowsprit. I guess you will remove it when you are doing a long passage since you might not want it hanging out there. I usually will lash down my anchor on the deck, off of the roller, for a long passage. All of this action looks like it might be more involved since you can't just haul the anchor in over the bowsprit. I think I saw that it lives underneath the bowsprit. Second, and you may have a plan for this, it seems like it would be a good idea to have a substantially reinforced deck where the anchor chain tumbles into the locker. Not sure how fiberglass would hold up.

As always i admire your precision and expert epoxying, but I'm very concerned how you will prevent water from entering the tube as the bow goes through waves in rough weather. I think cutting the deck was unnecessary, especially when I saw how thick it was. IMO it would be far better to lead the chain along the outside of the deck and then through a hole where the anchor winch and chain locker will be. That way you have less damage to the structure, easier to examine the chain, clean and change the chain or anchor, plus the hole will be vertical with a lip, rather than facing into the waves like a scoop. If the chin is tight it won't slip across the deck from side to side when tacking, and if it did it could be tightened with a line mid length along the deck. I'm sure you have all this worked out, so I look forward to the next few vids to see. Best wishes on an amazing build. Armchair Admirals only see the faults hahaha

I'm sure you've worked it out, but .. forgive the noob questions.. what about wear in the trough? dragging metal over fiberglass, metal wins. and what about cleaning the chain?
