Of course we all love to see the bespoke hinges. But if you decide to keep the stainless piano hinges, I believe you should consider reversing them so the barrels rest in a small chamfer or ogee. It keeps them below the surface so you won’t have a toe catch point with the barrels being higher than the surface.
@buddyyaussy57727 ай бұрын
If the "barrel" of the hinge is below the surface of the deck, then the lid can't open fully. Barrel up allows the lid to open fully flat against the deck.

Carbon hinges for sure! My concern about the SS hinges is that they could be a foot hazard for barefoot sailors. with the carbon hinges you could bevel/fair the edges into the deck. Then no cut feet! That's my 50 cents.

If you're going to make a plate to insert into the channel to block water, put it closer to the bow. That will decrease the weight of the water in the channel that will hit the plate.
@RobPattinson-ui2qh7 ай бұрын
Good idea. If you add a trap door hinge plate in the floor of the channel in front of the plate, the water has a place to escape and keep the pressure off the plate. Making the trapdoor sprung will keep it closed and act as a one way valve against the smaller waves, but when a big one hits and the water enters the channel, then hits the plate and opens the sprung trapdoor. All this means it would have to be at the root of the bowsprit, at the tip of the bow.

Maybe something at the front of the chain channel to slow the water down? Even something like broom bristles mounted on the bottom of the lid at the very bow. The chain could slide through it and it might even help clean the chain as well as slow the water down. Everyone loves your custom hinges, myself included. Nice work and consideration to viewers who appreciate seeing a near finished project in one video. Also a real big thank you, I'm still learning from some of your projects--even though I finished my apprenticeship 15 years ago. Not to pick at all, but the 6 0unce fiberglass tape at the hatches edges to seal the core. This area on my hatch work always a concern at a leak spot, not too crucial in the project your doing. I usually follow grind the this top corner and do a second layup to allow for dings and rough service damage. While you were demonstrating another possible solution to be faster, It to putty fill milled fiberglass after taping. 1. 1/8" rabbit around the top of the hatch side edge just beneath the top skin, fill with milled fiber and resin. 2. Use an air roller to "roll out" the milled fiber putty instead of knife; works far quicker and leaves a finished surface similar to cloth layup, so minimal sanding. 3. Green cure work the edge. sand or just rasp with SUFORM 1/2 round file off the surface. 4. Fill any low voids. 5. Sand 80 or if possible180 to final paint prep. Hope that was clear and maybe helps on corner edges in rough service areas.
@markkeller89157 ай бұрын
ditto to fill in for recessed hinges, router, and make compression post, milled fiber fill, make and insert to press in, wood and re-router it out, or overfill and router a second time, or silicon mold a insert and remove after cure. FWIWI like the look of butterfly hinges for foot traffic areas

Maybe put hinges inside of the chain rail box, as in, mounted to the underside of the lid and the inside of the rail. This will help keep the deck free from things your feet will catch on, as well as looking clean and sleek. I'm thinking of a barefoot or a toe catching on an edge of a hinge, probably not fun. You could then easily use stainless hinges without it not looking as nice as your carbon hinges. HDPE liner on chain path is great idea. Great work guys. Incredibly inspirational.

I would seriously consider hidden hinges of whatever material. You'll regret not doing that the first time you carve a groove in your foot with an exposed hinge. I would also consider large drains into and out of the windlass and chain lockers - ideally not into the bilge. After a dozen muddy anchorages, that chain channel is going to fill with mud, even if you're deligent in hosing off the chain at the bow. You're going to want to hose that mud out and it's going to end up in the chain locker via the windlass locker. Keep it all smooth and free flowing so it's easier to keep clean.
@wallacegrommet93437 ай бұрын
Use rare earth magnet latches to retain the chain trough lid. Off-the -shelf silicone gasket weatherstripping can keep out water as the magnet latches supply sealing force. Consider laying cheap PVC, hdpe, or polypropylene pipe in the trough as the sacrificial channel protection. Quick, easy, cheap. Schedule 80 pipe is dense and will be quiet enough.

I would have coord out the foam and then fill it with epoxy filler. The way you did it it will delaminate and you will have water intrusion.

A solution for the seawater running down that water funnel you made, it seems to me only one thing that will work well. Cut a rectangular hole (or two) in the bottom of the trough and build a funnel and hose underneath and combine that with whatever drain you're planning for the windlass pan. Hopefully that will intercept most of the water and the chain should glide over it and not droop down the hole. You can also flip that long cover open to wash the chain as it comes in. Otherwise you'll be washing the chain gunk right into the pan. Hi Mom!

Definitely carbon hinges. And the arguments below make the point exactly, especially because scraping a wet barefoot on a ss hinge could be an issue. However, a 2 mm or 3 mm stainless steel liner inside the trough will protect the fiberglass better and will be much more permanent than PVC or UHMW. If you cut a 1½" pipe lenghtwise, a "U" shaped liner will be a smooth surface for the chain to run freely, and you keep the other half as a backup.
@chicobicalho56216 ай бұрын
Actually, looking at the image of the trough, it looks as if a 3" Ø pipe cut in half lengthwise will be more like the proper size for a liner.

Regardless which material you end up using for the hinge, you need to both use the hinge "properly" the way it is designed, by mounting the wings along the edge of the door and the edge of the deck so that the only exposed part of the hinge is the knuckle. Just as you see them installed on actual pianos. And have the hinge cover the entire length of the opening. Other than that, what a cool concept for a tidy deck up front! (foredeck?) I'm not down with marine lingo 😊

Screw the hinges to the side of the Deck cuts and the lids (with the contact ob the upper side so they still open). That way, they stay in the Deck and are not visible nor you can scratch your feet. I would also add some kind of rubber seal to the opening sides of the lids so they are more water resistent at the top of the slids, and they are fitting tight and dont move that fast... and I would avoid metal, which would rust away

That water surge effect can be used to blast water out past non return ports with rubber straps or similar as the non return valve In addition, I suspect a good blast of water will just lift the long strip covering the anchor chain. What about lining the trough with lengths of stiff brush, which will slow down the flow of water and also scrub the anchor chain as it comes in. What do you think??
@GregPenoyre7 ай бұрын
I think you should fix the hinges within the slot (door style) then you won’t have to see them. The slot could have one long stainless steel piano hinge which would help strengthen the cover as well. I also wonder if at times the locker will fill completely before it drains. Can an electric windlass take that much water? Great video, great progress!

Yeah for carbon hinges, how about rubber flaps on the front of the chain channel that will roughly seal the windlass shelf from getting hosed with salt water.
