Hey South Africa, we’ve finally landed in your beautiful land. We speak to one of your best African spirituality promoters -Dr. Khanyisile Tshabalala. We’re happy to host her and learn on African spirituality and how Africans practiced it then and why we need to hold onto it now more than ever.
Religion plays a key role in Africa. On this episode we look at what Africa was before colonization and the African spiritual practices held. 15:30 - Christianity vs dictatorship, colonialism, neocolonialism
17:17 - Africa pre-colonial
20:48 - The catholic church and colonization
22:47 - Religion as a patriarchal system vs spirituality
27:15 - The Spirituality practice vs religion practice
29:10 - Christianity is a western system
31:30 - African fundamental practices - Religion is faith spirituality you just know
35:08 - Embracing self as African and African spirituality

Thank you for this content, but for the sake of objectivity, if you going to title your post "African Spirituality vs Christianity', it would be good to hear from both sides. Hopefully we get to hear a response that presents more than a colonial representation of christianity.

@@joshuamadalitsochiundiza8638 Maybe you have a point. But I am wondering which representation of Christianity is not colonial in Afrika? Except for Ethiopia, where Christianity is also not indigenous, by the way: Acts 8: 26 - 40. It is an externally infused ideology. Tell me of an Afrikan community that was christian in 10 BCE? In 476 at the fall of the Roman Empire? Or of an Afrikan community where France, Britain, Portugal, Italy, and Spain, did not infuse Christianity into the colonial philosophy. Are you up for an interview, to educate us on the Non-Colonial Christianity, to bring the balance? It would be interesting to learn.

@@DrKhanyiLitchfieldTshabalala Siyabonga Mama Tshabalala for your response. I am in agreement to some extent on your point of external infusion of Christianity, but my point dwells ultimately on the African response to Christianity, the philosophical benchmark being African realism, where Africa has always had a response to external infusions, whether forced or of our free will. Christianity is recent in the context of African history, but its adoption and adaption locates that premise of African realism that is the crux of Africa's response to Christianity. This is manifested by individuals like Emperor Ezana, Prophetess Kimpa Vita, Simon Kimbangu, St Augustine of Hippo, Johanne Marange etc. Or the unspoken Abba Mikael who had a brief but great influence on reformer Martin luther. I wouldnt mind an interview, I am keen to learn. Asante sana for your response, I am also your student, with many questions.

Humble correction: In Nguni culture (Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, and Swati), we say, Thokoza! Or Camagu! Meaning we give praise to the ancestors, the owners of the wisdom and the knowledge. It is not just Tobago. It is both the diaspora and the continent herself. It is almost like we have been bewitched. We even kill each other about Islam or Christianity. Now we have a faction that is breeching Christianity and Judaism. My analysis has always come to the same conclusion = decolonisation or the need for a cultural revolution. Europe went through it in Rennaissance, India has had one, China, Malysia, America, Japan.... But no, we want to berate our spirituality, culture, and languages, and hope to rise.

@@SPICEMAN-473 I wish all my people can come to that kairos moment. We are largely initiated into religion without our permission. I mean I was born into a Catholic family, thus baptised as a baby, names after Catholic Italian people, encouraged to respect Latin, etc. But that was my parents! Not me! Through my journey in life, I had to develop into me.... I ditched my colonial religious names, and I gave myself the name, Khanyisile. A past perfect tense meaning, the one who has lighted, or brought light. It fits in with my ancestral gift of knowledge.

We need more sisters and brothers like her to talk more about the Africa Spirituality so as to reeducate us on it. We did lose many of our beliefs due to colonization. Thank God for social media we are getting better and more informed about the situation. We know today that the earlier colonizers were killers and liars. They distorted the narrative to potray their thoughts and actions. Our Tongues may differ across Africa but the Spirituality across the continent is the same. The Europeans copied and whitewashed our beliefs to be theirs. Thank God for the new awakening.

I want to share this video with everyone I know. As a Canadian born Jamaican, I struggle to know myself. My "Jamaican" culture is a mix of African slavery and British colonization. Jamaica’s national dish (ackee and salt fish) comes from West Africa (ackee) and Britain (salted cod). I struggle to connect with my family because I am awake and question everything about our culture. Jamaicans, especially my family are so lost in Christianity they don’t understand what I see and know. They need something to believe in without understanding their power is within. I needed the reminder that spirituality comes from within not a "high priestess" or other head. Thank you for sharing this!

Very interesting interview. I have believed in Christ for a long time. I understand her views but I think she is leaving out the fact that the scriptures were prominent in Ethiopia long before colonisation. People knew the Word long before these events occurred. Catholicism alone does not sum up the message of Jesus. And for the record, I am in full support of the idea that Jesus himself was not a white man. Point is, the words of scripture have been used to control and divide not only Africa, but the entire world, something that Jesus(Yeshua) would not want. Race itself is a false term created to divide. We are one race, one people, the HUMAN race. Humanity UNITE. God bless you all. Shalom to all cultures, all creeds, all nations former and lasting.

Many Christians love to reference Ethiopian Christianity when they cannot dispute the truth of spiritually as the way forward. Yes Ethiopian Christianity was around first however what is practised on mass globally is the adulterated European version of it with lies throughout

@yaaasantewa7373 2 ай бұрын
And certainly what was before the construction of this adulterated form was the Intuitive and creative "God-reflective" nature to assist us to filter right and wrong/love and no love. The prescription makes us forget and follow without listening to the internal God direction. It has also lead to us denying our natural ties with ancestors which all other nations respect.

There was the Coptic church and Ethiopian church before the catholics. However these churches were formed through the Greeks not by africans. The kushite king at the time Ezana made his kingdom into a Christian kingdom after his conversion by two Caucasians either of greek or turkish origin who had come from Egypt. So all the subjects of that kingdom had no choice but to abide by the king. Those who denied it eg the oromo are still non christianized africans.

But we are also slowly sliding and receding to the mediocrity that is rampant in this continet: where Afrikan Spirituality is synonymous with witchcraft, where only Islam or Christianity can officiate over the opening of Parliament, where the Afrikan language or mother tongue ends either in primary school or junior secondary. I mean in some Afrikan countries, jacket and tie is the only permissible attire in Parliament. We are also going there, if we do not stand up and defend the little traces that remain of our BEING. Neocolonialism, is by nature, an anathema to ubuntu, to our culture and spirituality. It is a war - and I do not think we are conscious as Afrikans in SA, that we are at war.

Loved this talk. Thank you! White South African here currently living in Mexico. Remember true Spirituality is yes...first learning to love ourselves and our past and our people and forgiving and loving everyone. Realise that we've all been programmed/brainwashed to 'hate' each other through religion, sex, race etc for that's the way 'Theyve' controlled the world. Through hate and fear. However things are changing and people are waking up. It's not our responsibility what happened to us however it's our responsibility to heal from that. True Spirituality is Unity, Harmony, Love, Light etc.. there is no separation... we're all ONE...all in this together. And if we can strive towards this we'll be stronger together. And it takes work..a decision... commitment to your healing. Yes. I may be white and not have experienced what people of colour may have... however I've been through my own hell of abuse and trauma since baby until 6 years ago I decided... more and just been focusing on me and my healing. And no matter what we've been through... maybe different experiences... however it always burns down to the same core beliefs for all of us to work on ... feeling rejected, abandoned, unaccepted, unloved, uncared for, unworthy, undeserving, not good enough etc. Wishing everyone Healing, love, light, courage, wisdom and understanding. I RISE! YOU RISE! 💖✨🙏

Really enjoying this. I practiced Christianity for many years until God provided me with an awakening. I now pay attention to the synchronicities that exist. God will always make Himself and His message clear to those whose spirits are awake. I’ve learned that there are many truths in many spiritual practices and it’s ok for me to adopt what resonates with my journey.

I identify with all that this SeeStar says. I too always asked questions a lot in church got me into trouble a lot, eventually I left & yes it was like going through a messy divorce took 2yrs before I stopped saying I was 7 day Adventist & 3yrs to stop saying I was christian. The brainwashing was very deep & embracing African Spirituality is what helped me remain liberated. I have a much stronger & closer relationship with my Ancestors & my guides they help me a lot. I am aware of their presence every waking hour.
