Another meteorologist sounded like he was going to have a nervous breakdown when broadcasting information about the May 24th, 2011 tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. I don't blame him for sounding like he's on the verge of a nervous breakdown because this tornado outbreak occurred just two days after the EF5 tornado that just devastated Joplin, Missouri. In regards to the Joplin, Missouri tornado; the reason why the National Weather Service didn't issue a Tornado Emergency for Joplin even though they had issued a Tornado Warning for Jasper County MO is because the tornado that hit Joplin developed too quickly. When the tornado sirens were first sounded at 5:17 PM Central Daylight Time; this gave the residents of Joplin seventeen minutes to take shelter. By the time the tornado sirens began wailing a second time at 5:34 PM Central Daylight Time; it was too late for the National Weather Service office in Springfield, MO to issue a Tornado Emergency for the city of Joplin because the tornado was already on the ground and moving through Joplin. In addition; the Joplin tornado was hidden in very heavy rain and difficult to see.

"This tornado was intermittent and not strong" how could you know that without a damage survey?
@DarkJediPrincess Жыл бұрын
Oh, I don’t know, by reports from storm chasers with eyes on the funnel cloud whilst tracking it on the ground saying it kept dissipating and reforming, and the debris vortex where it touched the ground wasn’t spinning very fast or doing much of anything to its surroundings? Or from meteorologists observing the speed of the cyclone’s rotation using Doppler radar? You don’t need a damage survey to infer how strong/violent a tornado is, you just have to _watch it_ while it’s on the ground. That’s what storm chasers _do_ for a living/as a hobby (amongst many other things, such as helping with rescue efforts and keeping local news stations, emergency reporters, and the local NWS station apprised of the situation on the ground). And Doppler radar is designed _specifically_ to allow meteorologists to measure the velocity of weather formations such as tornados, including their rotational velocities, by exploiting the Doppler Effect. (Hence the name.)

Simple; the Enhanced Fujita Scale only ranked the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado as an EF3 due to the low number of fatalities/ injuries and the severity of the damage. Which is pretty stupid in my opinion. To be honest; A tornado that is more appropriate for an EF3 tornado rating would have to be the February 10th, 2013 tornado that struck Hattiesburg, Mississippi. There were no fatalities and only a moderate amount of injuries in the Hattiesburg tornado. What is particularly shocking about the Hattiesburg tornado is that it passed over Hardy Street in downtown Hattiesburg and caused a considerable amount of damage to the University of Southern Mississippi campus. Not many USM students were on campus as they had gone to New Orleans, Louisiana for Mardi Gras weekend.

Because the Enhanced Fujita scale is based on the damage the tornado does to its surroundings, and since the El Reno Tornado spent most of its time out in the boonies, it didn’t do a whole lot relative to its size and violence.

Well, I'm guessing you don't know the dark history of central Oklahoma. Especially Moore. After 2013, people take it more serious now. They didn't before because they thought 1999 couldn't happen again. It did.

@@snuffedtorch3683 When this beast of a tornado occurred I can't imagine the amount of fear and panic among the residents of Moore and the Oklahoma City metro area. What is particularly terrifying about the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado is its width of 2.6 miles. Plus the fact that it killed Tim Samaras along with his colleague Carl Young and Tim's son Paul Samaras is extremely heartbreaking. I can't imagine the amount of grief and sorrow Tim's widow Kathy Samaras felt because she had to bury not only her husband but also her son. It's truly amazing that Kathy Samaras hasn't gone completely insane from grief. Of course, I consider the crew from The Weather Channel lead by Mike Bettes to be absolute morons for moving south on Highway 81 to get good coverage of the tornado instead of moving north on Highway 81 to get away from the storm. Of course, I am just relieved that while Mike and the rest of his crew from The Weather Channel were injured at least they were not killed. I remember watching coverage of the immediate aftermath of the Joplin, Missouri tornado on May 22nd, 2011 and I was moved to tears as Mike broke down on air while covering the storm for The Weather Channel outside of St. John's Regional Medical Center. What made me smile and believe in the good of humanity following the Joplin tornado was that Mike had adopted an orphaned Golden Retriever and named her Joplyn. Sadly, Joplyn died last year. While I was understandably saddened by this because I love dogs; I reconciled my sadness by reminding myself that at least Joplyn was adopted by a loving family and lived in a home surrounded with love and affection.

Washington, IL Tornado (11/17/13) please.
@michaellovely66013 жыл бұрын
What is so shocking about the Washington, IL tornado is the time of year it hit: November 17th, 2013. You typically don't expect a tornado to happen in late November. If The Weather Channel decides to do another "Top 10 Worst Tornadoes" countdown; it should be as follows: 10.) Hattiesburg, Mississippi on February 10th, 2013. 9.) Henryville, Indiana on March 2nd, 2012. 8.) Greensburg, Kansas on May 4th, 2007. 7.) Moore, Oklahoma on May 20th, 2013. 6.) Andover, Kansas on April 26th, 1991. 5.) Wichita Falls, Texas on April 10th, 1979. 4.) Villonia, Arkansas on April 25th, 2011. 3.) Atlanta, Georgia on March 14th, 2008. 2.) Jarrell, Texas on May 27th, 1997. 1.) Washington, Illinois on November 17th, 2013.

@@bardthenascarfanaticdragon I'm glad you survived. But in case you haven't watched the countdown of the top ten worst tornadoes on The Weather Channel; these are the ones that made the list: 10.) El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31, 2013. 9.) Super Tuesday Outbreak of 2008. 8.) Moore, Oklahoma on May 3, 1999. 7.) Worcester, Massachusetts in 1953. 6.) Gainesville, Georgia in 1936. 5.) Palm Sunday Outbreak of 1965. 4.) Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. 3.) Super Tornado Outbreak of 2011. Naturally the tornado that was profiled for this entry was the tornado that tore through Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 27, 2011. 2.) Super Tornado Outbreak of 1974. Of course the tornado profiled was the tornado that tore through Xenia, Ohio on April 4, 1974. 1.) Tri-state Tornado of 1925.
