This is about the time that Patrick was playing the Punch and Judy man, Cole Hawlings, in the BBC adaptation of John Masefield's 'The Box Of Delights', practically reusing his old man 'Roddy' look from the 'All Creatures Great and Small' episode 'Hair Of A Dog'. Such a distinctive looking individual as Patrick, with an equally distinctive voice but, such was the skill of the man for making them 'real', you bought into every single character he created. And what a wonderful Doctor he created, following on from William Hartnell.

This sketch should translate well over the pond as the game shows parodied here ‘what’s my line’, blankety blank’, (match game), ‘The Price is Right’ are all Goodson Todman game shows that originated in the US. The only references Americans probably wouldn’t get is ‘mastermind’, ‘call my bluff’ ( a more conversation based version of ‘to tell the truth’) and ‘give us a clue’ (charades). And the ‘playing the joker’ part was a reference to ‘It’s a Knockout’ which doubled your points in a round if you played the joker before it started.

One person pretends to be something or someone (say a bicycle, or Keanu Reeves, or a pterodactyl or the Tower of Pisa) and the other player has to guess who or ahwt they are by asking a maximum of twenty yes-no answer questions. The audience applauds when they get a "yes" answer to their question. A couple of the game shows in there you may not have had in America . A game show in the seventies where two teams of celebrities played charades it was called "Give us a Clue". the other "Call My Bluff" two teams of three players. where a team would take an obscure word from the dictionary and give three different definitions for the word and the opposing team had to work out who was telling the truth and who was bluffing. Hence when Ronnie Barker described the creature as a giant greenfly and the Judge said surely it is a Type of Yak. Ronnie Corbett said I will have to go with the Greenfly explanation and Ronnie Barker showed the Bluff.

Call my bluff spoof lol so surreal. The Mastermind bit is funny. I guess you have to be British of a certain vintage to understand what's going on

There was on British radio or TV program called My Bluff the the panel had to guess what the contestant was trying to hide what they did for a hobby or job or any other thing. There is on you tube clips from a TV show called Would I Lie To You the contestant tells a story and then panel has to guess is it false or true it is very funny I would highly recommend this to you its right up you street. I know you like British humor
