I'd highly recommend the BBC show Porridge, one of the best and from a similar era as Rising Damp. It also has Richard Beckinsale as one of the main characters. There are more characters than in Rising Damp and all funny. Also with the very talented Ronnie Barker, known for The Two Ronnies but his part in Porridge couldn't be more different. The wit is razor sharp with loads of laughs every episode and the show makes you grow to love all the characters. Start with the pilot episode which sets the scene. If you've already seen it then just ignore my ramblings! Loving all your reactions and comments. Thanks for all your efforts.

The character of Philip was groundbreaking for the time this was made. Whilst Rigsby himself is indeed ignorant and prejudiced, the show itself, is not. The show is actually anti-racist, and such wonderfully and expertly written.

Watching this episode of Rising Damp sparked a memory for me. I would like to suggest that you should try watching a clip of a program from the 1950’s or 1960’s. The program was called That Was The Week That Was, or for short it was known as TW3. The sketch was called the Class sketch or I know my place, which featured John Cleese and a very early appearance by the 2 Ronnies. I have meant to recommend this sketch to you for some time but I kept forgetting to send you the details of the name of the sketch. I do hope that you can find it on line somewhere.

Although this is the final episide of series 1, there was a christmas episode that aired before the start on Series 2. This episode isn't on the box set for some reason. Thankfully it's on KZbin. It's rising damp Christmas special 1975.

Eric Chappell who wrote rising Damp, has just died aged 88. He wrote part time, while working as an auditor for the East Midland Electricity Board. Till he had success with the stage play, aged 40 that later became Rising Damp. He went on to write many hit sitcoms, comedy dramas and plays, over the next 40 years.

Interesting trivia and I quote Michael Ward's Labour Candidate character (variously referred to by Rigsby as both dishonest and homosexual) was named Pendry in the original episode as transmitted. Unfortunately real-life Labour MP Tom Pendry decided that this was tantamount to libel, and sued Yorkshire Television. YTV apparently wiped the master tape; consequently the only copy believed to have survived is a slightly low-quality Canadian NTSC recording. This is generally screened with offending banners bearing Pendry's name blurred out. No-one knows if the PAL master actually exists or not.

I'd also highly recommend 'Only When I Laugh' and 'Home to Roost' by the same writer, grew up on them along with Rising Damp and both as hilarious too! Eric Chappel wrote some great sitcoms.

The trick for Rigsby is the same trick applied to Basil Fawlty. Make them just a little bit likeable. Just a bit , not too much. With Rigsby we share his frustration around Miss Jones. We kind of route for him in his failed attempts to attract her. When he then turns petty and cruel , we see his whole character. A weak man blowing in the wind.

this was because by accident, the writer used the name of a real Tory candidate running for office, I think he was called Tom Pendry: he sued Yorkshire TV and won for defamation.

I LOVE that Phillip is a fake that really comes all the way from Croydon in Surrey. the nearest he ever got to the African Serengeti was sitting under a tree in Hyde Park London. Rigsby is such a stereotype, right down to his inevitable Conservative political views. Well he was right about women's lib not being a thing in Africa. It is pertinent because the left endlessly bang on about feminism and women's rights here where they already have them yet totally ignore the plight of many Muslim women here and abroad because it is politically correct to do so. I have had much direct contact experience with women in their own homes when I was seeing their husbands for business meetings, in certain cases Asian. E.g. The wife was most likely sitting on the kitchen floor peeling potatoes back against the wall, and I had to step over her. There would be no introduction from the husband, but I would say Hi, and wave to her. Not all Asian homes I visited, but enough to make me feel uncomfortable. Am I racist for feeling for those ladies?

In real life leonard rossiter supported the far right of politics and frances de la tour was one time member of the communist party they would clash often,that being one of the reasons she left the show.

Frances left the show due to theatre commitments mid-way through series 2, but returned for series 3 and 4. It is true she didn't get on with Leonard though. I don't think Leonard was far right, though he was right leaning, whereas Frances was very much left wing.

In a Two party system both parties have to be big tents. Thatcher was more of a right wing libertarian revolutionary than a traditionalist and her ideology would dominate the party within a decade of this, and within a decade of that, the entire political establishment. I think the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" tory was a dying breed, just as much as militant unionist Labour was a dying breed too; by the nineties the ideas of influence within the parties would be stock exchange new money libertarians to the right and identitarians to the left which effectively means it is the left being if it ain't broke don't fix it, at least economically, because identitarian concerns are too abstract to address the economy, whereas libertarian concerns are towards removal of regulation, reducing tax, privatisation of national institutions - that's where all the economic change takes place.
