The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I am 58, born in 64. I grew up listening to my grandparents and fathers records. When the late 70s and early 80s came around, I was not into hard rock, and music at that time. Instead I preferred my old records I had from my grandparents. Harmonicats were one of them, and I have been hooked on this great music ever since.

I took lessons from Don Les (bass) when he lived in the Marina Towers. I met Jerry Murad (Chromatic) at a few conventions. Al Fiore (Chord) and I belonged to the Windy City Harmonica Club in Chicago. RIP

I haven't heard this in so many years. Growing up with my grandparents, they used to play the record all the time along with the Three Suns version. Both The Harmonicats and the Three Suns had a #1 hit with "Peg O' My Heart" in 1947 and the Harmonicats did a fantastic job of re-creating their recording here. In fact, Buddy Clark also hit #1 with it, so there were three #1 recordings of this song in 1947, as well as other versions that charted in the Top 10. Fantastic! The song was originally a hit just before World War I, and it enjoyed a major revival of popularity in the late '40's.

The Harmonicats' original recording of this song was engineered by Bill Putnam, the brilliant recording engineer who pioneered the use of reverb, slapback echo, and other innovative techniques that many people credit Les Paul for "inventing".

They recorded the number one hit of 1947. This is the original trio, the group went through many changes before the original founders/members died out in 1996. They were the first group to use "artificial reverb"

I have a strong hunch the bass and chord are phony-playing (or slightly playing) with their recording tracks with the live orchestra following along. Those specifcally unique echo-effects are heard in this performance - - unless they used the Ed Sullivan theater men's bathroom for their echo chamber like they did on the groundbreaking 1947 recording made in Chicago.

Finally! A video with AL Fiore playing the solo. He was one of the many chord players of the Cats, but he was their original chord player and footage of him is quite rare. The chord players of the Harmonicats were the following: AL Fiore (original) Bob Bauer (replaced AL when he left) George Miklas (replaced Bob) Bob Herndon (filled in for AL Fiore in 1958 when AL Fire had a heart attack) AL Data, Bud Boblink and Joe Mass Jr were also chord players for the Cats. I was lucky to have been Joe Jr.'s student until his death in 2017.

no kidding, funny you say this. I have five of Al Fiore's chord harmonicas (the long ones). He didn't maintain his harmonicas at all, and three of them smelled horrid when i got them. Myself and Bill Morris, a fellow harmonica repairman, spent many WEEKS if not MONTHS cleaning these things. Several of Fiore's chords can be seen on my channel.
