Working on a review as well for this package though it’ll take some time. My disappointment is not getting the full gadget treatment for both Japan and western releases, especially given how preferable the western ports are to play sometimes. Or in this case the 2P Japan version of Same3 which was also toned way down and more accessible. I can understand the business behind it as they are coding these from scratch via reverse engineering the PCBs which is a huge task. And they just don’t have the time or budget to do that and implement full gadgets for every version. So they’re making a compromise and choosing the original or definitive version and giving that the royal treatment. So I get it even though I do lament the missed opportunity. I believe the physical has all DLC included and you can bet I’ll complain about no English menus in the hopes someone will listen. But I’m looking forward to also showing the flying shark nes port as though it can’t compare to the arcade, it was hugely nostalgic for many of us and sold like hotcakes in the day. Flying Shark was actually Toaplan’s best seller of all time and hugely influential. So I’m not surprised at all you enjoyed it more than the second game. Many do. It’s simple but also well designed and a great difficulty. Yuge-san the programmer lamented in an old interview that he was forced to make the second game much harder vs his original intent. I’ve got some new info and tidbits to share on that.

I think the lack of English menus is a big turn off for some, at least a few of my friends won’t buy them because the lack of English menus. Not me tho
@TheElectricUnderground2 жыл бұрын
Oh HOT DAMN You have the insider info on the games now that you know the programmer. I'm pretty sure that's cheating ;-) Yeah, the missing gadgets on the western versions were an odd omission. Ironically I hardly use the gadgets outside of reviews since I play in Tate, but the checkpoint gadget was super useful for the review ha. Like I said in my review, my biggest issue with fire shark is how they did the powerup system. If the powerups behaved themselves better that would have really improved the game in my opinion, because when you combine the erratic powerups with the slow movement and wicked bullet speeds, you get a nasty difficulty spike ha. I respect the difficulty for sure, but it's not the type of difficulty style that I respond to as a player. I do think it's a huge bummer the console ports aren't included because they are really fun and ironcally the release feels a bit incomplete without them. These day's I'm trying to be a bit more strict with the pricing, especially after my conversations with new players, so I think a base price of $20 or having the dlc included would go a long way towards making the game an easier buy for people. And yes, translate the damn menus m2 ha.

I have few complaints about the last two Shot triggers releases. I have a very diverse approach to what I play in the genre. The two Toaplan arcade garage releases are of slower pace and represent some of the building blocks of "modern" Shootemups. These are treasures and pure pieces of history with the option of more playable modes for newcomers. I own every Shot trigger physical release. The last two are just as "exciting" in historical context. I play them on their own individual merits and places in history. Here's hoping that the Shot triggers treatment continues to go all over the map, with an emphasis on previously arcade-only releases and the greatest genre developers, regardless of their styles. These are my favorite series of ports in gaming. Looking forward to the next release...
@TheElectricUnderground2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. I think these games and releases are great, but they do lack a little of the shottriggers X Factor that make their previous ports so exciting and detailed. Like the character portraits being animated in Mahou or the dancing little men in Feveron ha.

Hi my dude I did talk about this in the review where I mentioned that yes the DLC is included in the physical version, but the physical version is also a hefty $60! So my thoughts were that they should drop down that physical version price a little, at least to $50. $60 is a huge price tag for a lot of players.
@jerpface29422 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUndergroundVery valid point but think that most of us accept the higher price tag (right or wrong) as it is by primarily import that we buy these games so although not morally right, it goes with the territory. I've only played the Genesis version, but the bouncing unwanted powerups is one of the funniest things about the game. I reminds me of avoiding the weapons you don't want in Ghouls n Ghosts. But you just have to deal with it (if you're not a serious scorechaser) and switch up your weapons like it wants you to, to have some variety. The fire weapon is too overpowered as it is, so they want you to switch to the others I think. Twin Hawk (Daisenpu) is more pared down too with the "bomb" being your squadron of ships you can choose to dive-bomb all at once, but I remember it didn't have much in the way of powerups. The game is interesting because it's more slow and strategic, and you're always shooting ground vehicles, instead of other aircraft.
@TheElectricUnderground2 жыл бұрын
I think the bouncing powerups are less of an issue in the genesis version since it's much more lenient difficulty wise, once you get into the Japan version of the game though, man they start to really drive you crazy ha.

I've just ordered this from Play Asia - I agree the Tiger Heli collection was a little lacking and this package is probably more of the same but I'm a huge Fire Shark fan and I'll be great to play the MD version on a modern console as well as try some of the arcade versions I've never played. I agree the power-up system is slightly obnoxious in Fire Shark - it's like "You have the flame shot, here's a green... what don't want it? Here's 5 to totally fill the screen!!" in the later levels when you really can't have a weapon change because survival demands it, the power-ups become like enemies on screen. MD Fire Shark is still a pretty easy one though, and a great starting point for any novice.

I'm kind of on the fence about the two Toaplan collections, but what really pushes me into "not buy" territory is the lack of English. The custom modes are how I would get the most out of these games, and needing to try and Google Translate my way to figuring out a fun custom mode just doesn't make it worth the like $80 it takes to import each one. I can understand why a physical western release wouldn't be profitable to them, but is it really not even worth releasing digital versions over here? We're the Ketsui and Garrega sales really THAT BAD?

Where super easy was easy, the premium/deathtiny was medium and arcade was hard. I bought tiger hell collection, I liked it but it’s wasn’t $60 more around $30. So I’m somewhat hesitant with this one. The physical comes with all the dlc on the cart except for teki teki paki which is that puzzle game that was in the tiger heli collection. It’s only available physically I believe but it’s not a cart it’s a download code. I guess they just have that game and don’t know what to do with it so yeah lol. Might pick it up but might not. Oh that's interesting! I personally love tiny hitbox in games ha
@ninjaalex-yf5io2 жыл бұрын
@@TheElectricUnderground That's what I never understood. In old school shooters the hitbox is the sprite. What you see is what you get; If a bullet touches the sprite, then you die; it is deterministic, and it is your fault for not dodging the bullet. In manic shooter, the hitbox is mostly at center of the ship, and it is difficult (for me) to gauge where the hitbox outer limit stops at. This leads to dodging by luck vs dodging by intend. This approach renders gameplay indeterministic (from a player perspective) and completely voids the gameplay for me. Anyway, this is my rant of the day against Manic shooter. :)

Same Same Same isn’t that hard, I mean sure it is hard, but not impossible. Part of the game is learning how to manipulate & milk the power ups to heavily increase your score, eg: at one point in lv 2 there’s a lot of big planes coming at you, that drop 4 of 5 greens at the same time, the key is to know exactly when to pick them all up to get 25000 points and that next plane will then drop a blue or a red, it works every time. I did a 1CC no death vid about 2 months or so ago, it is on my chan, scroll to 8 minutes in the vid & you’ll see exactly what I mean. Great vid man, keep it up 👍

@Mr. Coffee This is how it was for the kyukyoku tiger heli collection as well for PS4. Switch version of that collection had the games on cart, so I assume it'll be the same thing here.

Yes it's on there, but the physical version is also $60 and I think that's too steep, at least for me personally. I think a 40-50 price point would have worked better, considering there is no arrange. If they made an arrange for the games, I'd say the price it totally fair.

Does the physical version include the dlc ?

It does, but the dlc is not on disc from what I understand. And the physical version is $60, so that's a pretty hefty price. Not a deal breaker, but a sting to the wallet for sure

"Same! Same! Same!" was like a concept for the first Raiden game. The wide shot and the thermonuclear bomber weapons are shared with Raiden.

absolutely! I reminds me a lot of raiden. Too bad it doesn't have a super speed ship ha

Absolutely! just beware that the dlc is not on the disc, it is a download code, which I think is a bummer.

It's a shame that M2 is feeling pressured to extract more of a profit from their products. I understand why, but that doesn't change the corrosive and exploitative influence capitalism has on production.

Yeah I do think it s a shame compared to previous ports in that sense, but hopefully they bring the heat in the batsugun port!
