A question to everyone: how do you cope with the fact that someone else’s feet with sweat and everything have lived inside the used shoes you just purchased? It’s one of the biggest no-no’s for me... But I can’t afford new Allen and Edmonds and I love to do these makeovers on my leather

I have been shining shoes since I was 9 years old, and going around all the pool halls, mafia clubs, and Board Walk in Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. I gave all my earnings to my Mom, because we were poor. I am so happy for these videos.

I just thrifted a pair of Allen Edmonds MacNeils in shell cordovan that look very similar to those for $60. They didn’t look too great at first but the soles still had a bit of life and there was no major damage on the uppers. I cleaned them up with some Saphir Reno’Mat, Renovateur, Cordovan cream, and finally mirror gloss and they look amazing! One of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

nice work. multicolor shines are not my personal thing, but I can see why some people like it. You know, I get why you like bringing things like this back to beauty. When I restore anything, a lighter, a piece of silver, whatever I may be doing, I know the satisfaction you get when something is done and brought back. Unfortunately, I'll wager there are a lot of people these days that don't know that kind of satisfaction. They don't get it. Keep on doing your thing. Watching it is almost as good as doing it in some ways, I find it relaxing.

That pair is american through and through. English pairs are much clean looking, not too much going on, on the upper. Sole is different story, english shoes tend to have chunky, grippy soles maybe due to rain they receive in england.

It might be worth noting that the burnishing isn’t really the dark areas of toe and near the laces. It would be the comparably “lighter” (in this case redder) areas that would be “burnished” or rubbed through use and thus appear to have lost their comparably darker black toned dye...in the end this beautiful pair really is what a formerly dark dark blackish red would look like if the high wear areas were allowed to “burnish” from use, lose their dark tones, reveal the lighter tones underneath but kept beautifully shined and conditioned throughout. With that visualization it may be easier for others to imagine where and why certain colors go where they do. For example the toe cap/medallion, laces, and counter would never be a lighter shade than the vamp quarters or tongue but you need to know why! Awesome work Preston. 👍🏻👏🏻🙏🏻
