I feel the exact same way. I didn't even know I could feel passionate about leathercare, but now I want to take care of my new shoes, my boyfriend's shoes, and just give each leather shoe the love it deserves. The way he repairs some shoes that look beyond salvaging is so crazy.

I am a woman and these tutorials will come in quite handy for me, as well. I just want to say THANK YOU, ELEGANT OXFORD, for some very invaluable information, as well as, showing some very beautifully restored shoes, for men. I have been positively amazed at how new some pairs of your shoe finds end up looking. Even some very tired and worn shoes look fabulously refreshed and nice, again! @@zmrkljez Guilty as charged! I bust a pair of sneakers about every four months with the mileage I do. I buy two or three pairs at a time, but now that everything is made in China or Vietnam etc., I find that the expensive "Brands" aren't much better than the cheap stuff. I had a wife that always bought cheap shoes for work but I finally got her to understand that for a great part of our lives we are on our feet so if we want them to last we're better to buy "good" shoes, regardless of cost. Thank you SO MUCH! I take really great care of my clothes and shoes since I've always had a middle of the road income and like to look like I have much more. I'm also good at picking out classic styles that never look dated. Living in the Pacific Northwest makes it difficult to prevent damage from water or even mud. I have shoes and clothes that are 40yrs old and look brand-new. I have never found a decent tutorial on cleaning or restoring suede. Your advice was wonderful. I especially was not aware of the importance of a shoe tree in the cleaning/restoration process. My grandfather always had his dress shoes supported by a shoe tree when stored. Now I need to get one for ladies shoes. Thank you!

It's nice to see the younger generation dressing up without tennis shoes. I see a lot of guys nowadays that's all they wear is tennis shoes. But when I see a guy wearing nice shoes especially if they took care of them, I always compliment him. Especially if he's wearing color coordinated clothing with his shoes. I was taught when I was younger that fads come and go but the classic look will always stay forever. I've always been accused of being overdressed, I think it's because they feel a little intimidated. But I don't care because it makes me feel good, and that I'm on top of my game. You can tell alot about a man by the way he dresses. And yes I have a closet full of shoes and boots.

I gave away several pairs of Johnston and Murphy Aristocrat line of shoes as well as Cole Haan(all USA made) I've collected over the years working in mens clothing.... not counting custom ordered Corbin suits(1977-1994). In this shoe world it is but maybe not in the regular world. In the shoe world, anything 30 years old is absolutely vintage, since shoes don’t last as long as people. Also, shoes that are no longer in production because a company went out of business (Hanover) or because the shoes changed production location are considered vintage if from the 90’s as well.

What a treasure you have!! They're beautiful. I have two pairs of Aristocraft shoes. They're comparable to Allen Edmonds.

FrantixFTW The shoes look pretty new, so I assume the owner is wealthy or dead.

I don’t think so. The only time you would get rid of shoes of this quality is when you go for the ‘big sleep’.

Hi Preston, Just curious on how you estimate the useful life of these thrift finds? My main worry would be the soles. If I put in a lot of work in restoring the shoes only to have the soles break in a few months then it would be a waste of the time. However, if it lasts for at least 2 to 3 years, I'd say it is worth it. Maybe you can do a video on how to check soles that are in good shape, or on how to make the soles more durable after picking it up from a store? Great vid tutorial as always!

Not Preston but what I do personally is ensure that the soles haven't been heavily used. To tell this you'll look at the stitching around the edge, which all goodyear welted shoes will have (and basically all quality shoes are GYW). If the stitching and its surrounding material is worn through, it will need a resole. If not then it's got a good amount of life left in it.

Are there schools where I could learn how to do this at your level? I used to work at a thrift shop, and loved cleaning the shoes and glassware. It's fulfilling to see the beauty restored to something that looks less than stunning, as well as therapeutic and relaxing. Subbing.
