They sure did. Cause by my math this is gonna kill every ps5 in under 2 years. So ps5 has about a 1.5 year life span by faulty design. 99% of people are gonna trash their ps5 if it does this. They ain't gonna fix that. I've done it. Fixed my old one and it was this problem. Took hours and there's like 200 screws that take a star screwdriver with a hole in it. Special from most every other screwdriver set so you gotta buy one just for ps5.

​@colonelradec5956 that's exactly why it dries out though, gravity pulling it one way so the other side isn't covered properly. Keeping it flat literally solves the overheating problem for most people, if it doesn't then cleaning the PSU holes will. In the 2nd edition of the PS5 they actually made bigger dust catcher holes specifically where the PSU is because its a MF to clean on the day one.

Considering this was Sony's first attempt at using liquid metal they did pretty good for the most part. Maybe they could have communicated better about the risks of it leaking out. Especially if your system is dropped or constantly being moved around a lot?

i dont think leaking is that big of an issue unless u drop ur ps5. Oxidation, however is what's causing a lot of overheating issues as well I think mines currently suffering from that but havent opened it yet to respread liquid metal

Mine’s been vertical since day one without issues. It’s even been on a long haul flight in checked luggage and came out the other side fine, so the seal is up to the job, too. The only thing I make sure to do is clean out the inlets, fan, and heatsinks every few months, before they ever start to clog. TronicsFix (who uses a specialised applicator rather than a cotton bud to remove oxidation) thinks the dry-spot oxidation is related to cases of past overheating due to clogged inlets and heatsinks, with it more likely to then to occur in that spot instead of somewhere else if stood vertical. A dirty PS5 starts overheating due to clogged heatsinks, that causes oxidation on the APU, which then causes further overheating and crashes. It’s not gravity causes dry spots which causes overheating. But people love a story and that one is now here to stay forever as it’s a success with the algorithm. I’m not going to laugh at you, but there was so much concern-trolling around this at the time that I can get why you might have been treated harshly. I’m past three years vertical with regular usage and never overheated once so far. I just keep it clean.

Sometimes all you need to do is put it flat and the liquid metal will even out and cover the chip better :) if it still overheats I highly recommend (particularly if you've got an older model) taking out the fan and shining a torch Into the bottom, it can be a little cramped but if you see a row of holes clogged with dirt that's your PSU not breathing properly- toothbrush will fix that 😊 sometimes it's not the liquid metal but the PSU but it's still better to keep the console flat. Don’t use a conventional cotton swab. You need a special swab is specifically for liquid metal. It will leave a lot of impurities in the liquid metal.

I literally used a cigarette butt. But your right don't use a cotton swab. That will soak up the metal. Last thing you wanna do. Cigarette filters are closer to Styrofoam. I also used a toothpick to scrape it around. Was ghetto but worked. You dont need special anything besides the screwdriver.

@@conradgladue3480 yes I did and kinda. If you've taken other stuff apart before most definitely. But you do need the special screwdriver. It's a star with a pin in the middle. I got mine with a PS5 fan. Just maybe Google PS5 screwdriver. If not maybe you can kinda force the normal star head in. Basically you just take apart the PS5 down to the last chip. Sounds hard but it's mostly just unscrewing 80 screws. It don't even need all of them. Then you get to the main chip and re spread the liquid metal. Just stir it basically. Look for dry bits and rub it around. Then screw it back together and it will work I'd bet. Mine did but other stuff broke like the antenna so I scrapped it not long after. But it stopped overheating immediately. Just use anything that won't soak the metal up. It is like paint almost. Even a toothpick could work in desperation. Or a straw. If it's from liquid metal the PS5 will overheat instantly on any high end graphics game. Mine would just shut off as I loaded the first screen. That's a sure bet it's the liquid metal. Low end games like terraria sometimes would run like 15 minutes.

The real problem is the adhesive surrounding the CPU. The heat makes the adhesive lose its stickyness. Then the liquid leaks. Sony needs to redesign the seal around the CPU. I can see liquid metal on the seal which means the seal failed. They should use some kind of rubber O'ring as a seal instead of tape.

@herrwahnsinn4229 Dude, don't use thermal paste on that console. It doesn't work well with it and heats up quickly. I have a friend who repairs consoles, and he told me that when the metal coolant heats up, it turns into a liquid. Since Sony didn't seal it properly, it slowly gathers at the bottom, leaving dry spots due to gravity. He also said that this happens regardless of how you use the console, even PS4s have this issue where the thermal paste becomes rock solid and doesn't cool the machine's APU.

You're wrong there. Normal thermal paste will dry up and get hard and you will have a similar problem requiring you to replace it. It's going to happen. Happens with CPUs and Video cards.

That's true. PS5 has a flaw when vertical. Gets hotter. Makes fans ramp up more. I put it horizontal and now more quiet and cooler

I'd do it for dirt if you got it to me. Its really not hard. Don't be intimidated. You just unscrew all the stuff in order. There are videos on youtube. Wipe it around and now reverse what you did taking it apart. Mostly it's just a ton of unscrewing and rescrewing.

ps4 is only 1.8 teraflop and ps5 is 10.28 teraflops. creates lot of heat processing 8.3 million pixels per second. PC has two different processing unit cpu and gpu still they get enough cooling solution. there are apu but they dont run at 10 teraflops.

Its not just about being verticle. Mine wasnt verticle and i still had liquid metal all over and it was drying out as well. I think this will happen to every ps5 in about 1.5 to 2 years. I know 4 people with ps5s and ive had to fix 3 of them. Fixed mine but it was so jank i bought a new one. Had other problems like loose hdmi. The antennas were damaged so i just scrapped it. Point is every ps5 ive fixed had the problem happen literally 1.5 years in.

If ive learned anything about the PS5 and sony in particular... damn.. The new hardware in terms of actual quality is actually pretty shitty! Sony used to be pioneers of quality In 3 years ive had 4 dualsense controllers fail, 3 got stick drift within months and the 4th one the R2 trigger snapped which is hilarious because i dont use adaptive triggers 😂 Also had a charging dock fail, then combined with the over heating console it just feels like a really cheap plastic new generation.

It will cause your ps5 to just shut off. Sometimes with a message sometimes not depending on how fast it shuts off. Ps5 games produce way more heat even just upgraded ps4 games that say ps5. Like Fortnite. Mine got so bad j couldn't even open a ps5 game without it instantly crashing. And my ps5 shut off after like a half hour of just the menus. Also you might never ever even get a message its overheating. That message usually happens when the ps5 is barely overheating. If it overheats bad it will just shut off. And probably won't turn back on right away without unplugging it first.

Most of the time, the PS5 overheats if you keep it standing upright. Due to gravity, the liquid metal inside accumulates downwards, creating a dry space at the top. Keeping the PS5 horizontally may alleviate the need to open it.
