When I moved to New York, I dramatically downsized, into a tiny studio apartment. Wanting a fresh start, I got rid of everything. It was truly liberating to shed all of my belongings and start all over again. The two of you have now enjoyed four years of adventures, while living out of your backpacks. It's much more important in life to collect experiences, rather than things.

After moving flats for couple of times we also learnt the same lesson as you guys. Now we ‘document’ every tiniest detail when we move into a new place. Less headache later! Also, you realise how much stuff you actually have only when moving out! It’s just shocking sometimes 😂

Always record a video before you move in to a rental. That way it's time stamped and visually evident. I've had to learn that lesson. Take extra pics of damage as well.

Boy! Does this bring back memories. In my debt-free journey, I reduced my worldly possessions to 5 pieces of furniture and 10 boxes and moved into the upstairs of a townhome (two bedrooms and the master bath). I was having flashbacks to that time watching your video!

When there's a goal in mind, such as preparing for travel, or becoming debt free (mine), knowing it is a short-term sacrifice makes it easier to handle. With age/experience comes the realization that "this, too, shall pass" isn't just a cliche - it's a reality! ;-)

Wow, was that apartment an efficiency? Such a good use of space in your closet-bedroom 5x8! What part of the city was this, Mission? I used to live up in Castro at the top of 17th. Such great memories of the City.... and Thai food options, YES! Surprisingly, here in Las Vegas, NV there are some pretty choice spots to find fanTastic Thai food! :)

I personally have never had an honest decent landlord. I'm sure their are some but all I've known and heard of are just scum. Had to go to court over a tile floor that was cracking because it wasn't installed properly. Of course I got blamed for it anyway and I had worked on my AC unit at the same place replacing bad contractors etc. for free, but that's how I was thanked. Oh yeah, never have got a single deposit back.
