Great video. An added bonus would have been to talk about safety features, like redundant loop and when to choose NC valve in case of power failure or contact failure.
@tiemen5965 жыл бұрын
6:20 You cannot reverse the current to reverse the force on the plunger in an NO or NC valve configuration- it will generate a pulling force regardless of the direction of the current. You can see this by the fact that both wires usually have the same color. At 6:20 you'd have to switch the position of the plunger (moving part of the armature) and pole piece (fixed part of the armature). The pole piece is commonly made hollow, with a shaft connecting the plunger (now on top) to the seal. Reversing direction of current is used in the case of latching valves, which have a permanent magnet. The solenoid then either adds to the permanent magnetic field, or subtracts from it when it is reversed. I suppose you could use a permanent magnet in an NC or NO valve? That just seems needlessly complicated to me - would like to see your next video.
@jasonwalker46105 жыл бұрын
Correct. Without a magnet in the plunger, the coil will pull the metal plunger to the center of the coil regardless of polarity.

Very nice! Only one thing: regardless of the direction of current flow through the coil, the solenoid will still move the metalic piston in the same direction i.e. the solenoid will bring the metalc piston center of mass in the point where the coil magnetic flux density is strongest. Thought that wasn't very clear at 6:15
@jeffm27873 жыл бұрын
Was about to post this as well. You would need a permanent magnet piston for what was said to work. For two directions you would need two coils with diode or relay steering, or as mentioned a permanent magnet core.

When I was younger, I put hydraulics on my truck. The kit came with pumps, cylinders, hoses, and dump valves (solenoids). Throw the switch one way and the pump would come on and the cylinder go up. Throw it the other way and the solenoid would open and the weight of the vehicle would push it back down. Now i know what the inside of those valves looked like and how they worked.

I love these videos. I share them with co-workers that I train. However I have to point out that the coils are non-polarized. The direction of current flow on AC systems makes no difference in the opening or closing of the mechanical part of the valve. They have no phase rotation. I work with solenoids every day in the HVAC/R industry. Coil voltages from 24vac, 120vac and 208vac. None have ever mattered how the phases where connected. This includes all magnet coils from contactor to relays. DC voltage system may be a different story. I am not sure about that as I do not work with much DC.

We use these solenoid valves to control the water flow in an industrial gantry type vehicle wash system. The wash program consist of various cycles, like prewash, wash and rinse cycles. For every cycle different water inputs, like recycled, line or demineralized water can be used depending on the system configuration. We use also small 1/4” directly operated valves for the antifreeze cycle. It means that compressed air is applied to the water pipes in order to empty them so that they dont freeze up in the winter.

Decent video but maybe don't use reversing the current to swap the magnetic poles to explain pulling vs pushing. The core of the solenoid isn't magnetic so the direction of the field doesn't matter just the position of the core before the solenoid is turned on.

What is the purpose of spring in normally closed valve while the plunger would still have fallen because of gravity? Is it used because of the pressure provided by the fluid or the resistance that is acting on the plunger by the surface of the armature?
@ALacunae3 жыл бұрын
We use these in fire sprinkler protection pre-action systems. With a solenoid valve we can only allow water, or whatever we're working with, to flow through sprinkler pipes in a building if certain conditions are met. For example, this is can be implemented in a building that has a system in an industrial environment with expensive equipment that would be very expensive to replace if flooded . If a sprinkler head is broken because someone hits it with a a moving piece of machinery, water doesn't pour out of the broken head and flood the area unless another fire detection device in a certain area of the building reports an alarm condition to our control panel. There are many configurations and applications!

A cool application for technology would be using it as a gateway to a depressurizing pipe. On the main pipe, if there is an increase of pressure within it indicated by a micro controller, the solenoid will open allowing fluid to move outside of the high pressure zone.

Great video! I recently encountered an issue with my autoclave where the tube that releases steam was pressed against the back of the collection bottle. This seemed to cause a weird clicking and grinding noise. I suspect it was because, during positive pressure, steam was released without issue, but during the negative pressure phase, the solenoid valve struggled to pull the negative pressure back in, resulting in those noises. Has anyone else experienced something similar or have insights on whether this explanation makes sense? I adjusted the tube's position, and it seemed to resolve the issue. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Fantastic videos! this and the other one helped my finally understand solenoids and solenoid valves. I’ve one question: are solenoids always “all or nothing” or is there a way to set them partially open/closed? You could regulate the flow of fluid through a line by setting how much the solenoid opens, but I bet there’s better valves for that anyway.
@derrickenbuenosaires2 жыл бұрын
Solenoids are open and close type valves. What you're referring to is an actuator that will open on percentage from a signal depending what we are trying to control.
