One thing I appreciate about Dragon Ball as I get older is how the protagonists represent completely different personal philosophies. Goku is purity, Vegeta is pride, Gohan is passion, and Piccolo is discipline. A great Gohan moment that doesn't get enough praise IMO is the rescue of Dende when they first meet on Namek. Anyone ever notice that Krillin never reprimands Gohan for losing it? I think he knows he was asking Gohan to act against his nature.

Piccolo and Gohan have a complex mentor-student relationship. Initially an enemy of Goku, Piccolo became a mentor and protector to Gohan, training him in martial arts and helping him to unlock his potential as a warrior. They formed a deep bond and their relationship is an important aspect of the Dragon Ball series.

Man. Stay coming with the heat Geekdom. I'm a huge Gohan fan and this was a great deep dive in the lives of a Master and his mentor. From the tournament of power until now, I feel like they done my character Justice. Especially in the manga. Let's not forget the Moro Arc; as exciting as it was with all of its moments, I have to say my favorite was when moro impaled Goku, and Gohan emotionally attacks Morro. Morro noticed the Sudden Rage rise in his power level as strong as he was himself at this point. This is when I realized Gohan still had that BEAST inside him.

For me, Piccolo is such an important character in Dragon Ball, I'm glad Piccolo got a power-up in Super Hero film he deserves to be up there along with Goku, Vegeta and Gohan. The reason subs say “uncle piccolo” in some subs is because gohan calls him “ojisan” which is used as either a simple “mister” in a familiar way, or in an honorific way that’s respectful of an elder that’s close to you (eg. Haruka calling Kiryu ‘uncle Kaz’ in subs”. Due to Gohan’s relationship being quite respectful of piccolo, it’s easy to see why that is translated that way.

First I think a better way to resolve this issue of Gohan's writing as a fighter would to revise his complacency in this movie: The revision starts as Piccolo asks Gohan about his training like the original story. When Gohan states that Goku and Vegeta could take care of theses future threats, instead being genuine about that statement , he is sweating and has a nervous expression on his face, signifying that he isn't being honest and is hiding something. When Piccolo leaves, Gohan deletes his webpage of insects and we see a new webpage with the title "Groundbreaking Science: KI Control" leading to us the audience confused; why is Gohan is concerning himself with KI if he is not doing anything with it. The another part of the revision revision is when Gohan unleashes his Ultimate Form, Piccolo is commenting in his head in amazement that the power boost of the Ultimate Form is similar to Kaioken Blue and Blue evolution, leading to Piccolo asking himself "How is Gohan this strong if he stopped training?" to which he is slowly picking putting the pieces together as time goes. The final piece of this mystery would be when Gohan unleashes the Special Beam Cannon. Piccolo confronts Gohan about the technique and Gohan finally confesses, that never slacked off after the T.O.P. and that he knew Piccolo was in disguise when revisited his house but chose not say anything let things play out. The reason he in his room for so long was that he was creating a book about KI control. After the all the battles the Z Fighters had over the years, Gohan feels like it's finally time to introduce KI control to the rest of the world. Gohan does express his regret about not spending time with Videl and Pan as much he should do to wanting to finish the book as soon as possible, leading to him realize he still has so much room for improvement, not just a fighter and scholar but also as a family man . Gohan declares that he truthfully never had any intention of just leaving everything to Goku and Vegeta, and that he will do his part in defense of the Earth. On the subject of Gohan’s new form, I personally think the that Gohan’s Beast Form should have been built up after the T.O.P. Like he would training with Old Kai, and that he taps into the Oozaru power in the form of a technique, similarly the way Goku did in King Piccolo Saga. And in this movie, Gohan manages to perfectly combine the Ultimate Form and the Oozaru power and ascends beyond its normal output, achieving the Beast Form. the form is different visually: the hair is wilder, with two locks framing his shoulders and he regains his tail but it’s white like his hair and he gains Piccolo-like fangs. Gohan in this form demonstrates a duality of personality; he can portray himself calm and tranquil but in another instance, he can become equally menacing and intimidating. These two separate demeanors would each be shown in response to certain situations. Furthermore, I believe that the form should be named “Kaio Beast” to perfectly reference the training Gohan has undergone with the Kaioshins and the power of the Oozaru that he has mastered.

You might be on to something very interesting. The Old Kai training, what if Gohan copied Goku’s Instant Transmission from all the times he watched Goku use Instant Transmission like how he’s seen and copied Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon? Gohan has had his potential taped in since he was really young, so not only would he “have potential to be strong if he trained” his mind and spirit would have lots of potential.(*Cough* Most Potential *Cough*) And Gohan was always forced to learn hard lessons early despite his good nature. Gohan has all the experience already, even as a kid. Then his potential unlocked twice, he has the potential to be a “Natural Genius” in Ki control.(Blind fight against U9 Lavander.) It makes total sense with what you’re saying about Gohan studying Ki control and introducing it to the World, he does seem like a Research Professor ATM. There is potential for awesome story development. Gohan has basically already been initiated with the Old Kai and getting his own outfit. Already went to the Supreme Kai’s place, so he can figure out the location with Instant Transmission. Or find another way after communicating with the Kai’s. But I’d say he’s an underrated Genius with Ki Control and Ki Techniques like Instant Transmission. And could easily travel back and forth. Maybe Videl supports his secret training, but maybe Pan notices her dad taking off and that’s why she’s curious and asks Piccolo if it’s true that Gohan could be stronger than Goku(Who’s had the most extraordinary feats recently)

Themes and folkloric allusions are all well and good, but I still think more needed to be done in order to properly incorporate them into the story - so the events appear to flow naturally. As it stands, most critical viewers would likely just see those transformations as feeling unearned, and lacking in substance. The themes and ideas behind a concept or event is only part of the storytelling. They must still feel causal and substantive...

I agree. These don't feel earned or realistic. Dragonball constantly gets considerably more lazy over time. These is just another Blue Evolution, Rage, UI/MUI, Golden Frieza SSjGSSj SSjG palette swap with little to no story, hardly "Gohan and Piccolo have been working their whole life to unleash this form." Every character seems to have their own color for no reason. Orange Piccolo, White Goku, Purple Vegeta, etc. I'm kinda tired of every movie and arc introducing another forgettable form or two just because. People complained that Gohan and Piccolo weren't relevant, so they just gave them new paint and called it a day. Remember how LSSj was based on the Saiyan of Legend or SSj4 was kinda like harnessing the power of Oozaru? There's little to nothing relating to Saiyan or Namekian lore, or even Gohan or Piccolo backstories here, imo.

Cell Max in itself is more like Bio Broly fanservice. Idk, it felt lazy to just throw a shell of Cell in there and all of these are somehow the level of Gods of Destruction or whatnot. In the Android arc, the Androids were stronger than Frieza somehow (collecting DNA), but it gets annoying how the same lazy concept is recycled in GT (Super 17) and now Super. Cell was at least special back then (excluding Super 13), but to do it in this age is disappointing.

Stuff like SSJ4 actually had some basis in the prior story, and it was pretty much the only form GT introduced aside from the Golden Oozaru, which was more like a precursor. Meanwhile, the ToP arc alone introduced two new Saiyan forms, and two flavors of UI. On top of ALL the other ones in Super. All with their own arbitrary colour themes, because that's typically as far as they go to actually differentiate them. And all to be replaced within a few arcs, because of diminishing returns. Which is what happens when you hand them out like candy. DB has become dependent on using transformations and plot devices ad a crutch for storytelling....

Piccolo's latent potential unleashed was lime green piccolo, put him on the same level as ultimate gohan, orange piccolo wanks him up to ultra instinct level, based on a basic dragonball wish and shenron giving something extra, is just kinda bullshit.
