Fun fact! I live in a town in Montana that Ubisoft employees visited to get their locales/pictures/taste for the local folks, and one of the bases in the game is based off of a local brewery and restaurant in town. I had no idea until I came across the place in game, and it blew my mind. It was a perfect recreation, and I had fun killing the weird cult members in a place I've had dinner and beers with my family many times.

I'd say the best part about this game was when this one character keeps you captured and you have to keep doing this little speedrun section where you have to kill everyone as fast as possible. However, the last time this happens, you whip around the corner expecting to see the final enemy you've killed three times previously, but this time its the resistance leader of the area. But because you're so well acquainted with it at this point, you've already sprayed him down and killed him. It was a rather neat idea that made me feel genuinely responsible.
@ReplicantBattyman4 жыл бұрын
i clocked it was him on the final run but theres no way to prevent it which is a shame. i just waited for the timer to run out, it reloaded me in the previous room, then glitched and halfway through beating some guy up told me id shot him and how guilty i shoudl feel.

EXACTLY. That freaking cult leader was begging to die and the best we get is watching him totally lose it and recite random scripture bits as a nuke appears out of nowhere. I'm still convinced he nuked the valley himself and the game that just came out being a spinoff seems to fit that theory. Because I'm quite certain at best one nuke should be falling in the vicinity of that patch nowhere. There are tens of thousands of better targets, so given the cult's weirdly infinite resources I'm guess he built weakish homemade ones and put them everywhere and no one noticed...somehow. That would've been a fun side mission, sneaking around defusing bombs for an alternate ending, but nope.

@@010203109 In reality, I don't think nuclear war would ever be possible. No-one on the planet wants a nuclear war, and as such, nobody in any government would ever start one. I think this game would have worked better if the antagonists hadn't been a religious group but rather a weirdo survivalist militia in the vein of Posse Comitatus or those guys in Oregon that held up the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Montana isn't big on that sort of fringe religious fanaticism, as much as it is on hardcore libertarians and political extremists who hate the government. If the game was set in rural Utah or Idaho, those would be better settings for a doomsday cult as you can find plenty of crackpot Mormon fundamentalists out in the sticks. The antagonists still could have had that millenarian "civilization is ending" outlook, but the religious element doesn't work and isn't that well-defined.

What exactly was Ubisoft's idea with this game's ending? You chose to arrest the villain, the county get nuked thanks to events you had no control over while he rants about how he was right all along. You don't arrest him, you don't know if the county gets nuked by the violent brainwashing you are subject to kicks in and you start murdering people. The game talks about not solving everything with violence, but when it gives you the option to spare the villain your act of mercy backfires. Not to mention the stuff about nuclear war was is learned through exposition that is optional to listen to. You do not set up something that big in details that a player can entirely miss.

I'm actually in the middle of replaying this game for the first time in months of the infamous New game plus difficulty... I'd have to say I am thoroughly enjoying it. it's not a masterpiece but there is a lot of interesting content here between the main villains the locations the support characters and the free DLC weapons.
I'm from rural Montana and I don't think they quite nailed us right. The adherents to this cult seem more like Idaho or Utah than Montana or Wyoming. Montana/Wyoming aren't really religious, they're more "get outta my yard!" isolationist types. Read "Under the Banner of Heaven" for a good look at fundamentalist cults in the Western US. I'm not upset over the characterization or anything, I just don't think of Montana that way. Utah is the place where religion really dominates. I suppose Mormons woulda been upset if you put it in Utah because it would have been a less thinly veiled jab at their fundamentalist cults.
@jakem726 жыл бұрын

There's only about 20000-60000 fundamentalist Mormons in the US, though. Also, Mormons in general don't strike me as particularly militant, especially when compared to Conservative Evangelicals. I've actually met and spoken with some American Mormons, and they were very nice and polite people. Some of my relatives are also Mormons, and they're fairly moderate folk, especially when compared to most Pentecostals and Jehova's Witnesses. I'm not American, but to me Texas would strike as an appropriate state for this kind of thing, given that David Koresh and Marshall Applewhite (founder of Heaven's Gate) were both Texans.
@moralityisnotsubjective56 жыл бұрын
Yes, when I think of cults Waco, Heaven's Gate and Jonestown are the ones that come to mind. Mormons when compared to FLDS Mormons are far too easy going and polite to ever form such a thing and certainly would never engage in violence or consider a mass suicide pact. And they are definitely pretty mellow compared to Evangelicals and Jehovah's Witnesses.
@jakem726 жыл бұрын
I narrowed my suggestions to the Rocky Mountain West because the setting of Far Cry 5 is there. Texas has a pretty different climate and geography (although you wouldn't know that playing Red Dead Redemption). But otherwise I agree about evangelicals and Texas. Montana is sometimes lumped into "The Unchurched Belt" with Oregon and Washington because it has one of the lowest per capita religiosity in the country. You can search Wikipedia for "List of U.S. states and territories by religiosity" and find that Montana was 7th LEAST religious state. I suggest "Under the Banner of Heaven" if you want to learn about fundamentalist Mormonism. It is quite militant.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I thought the ending was entirely shoddy. You spend the entire game being shown how awful each sibling is in their own right and in what ways each of them deserve a stray round and then you get to the end and you're basically told, "By the way, Joseph was right about the end of the world. He really did have god's foresight on his side and fighting him and Eden's Gate was wrong." John, Jacob, Faith, and Joseph are deliberately shown to be completely insane and their characters aren't written in any way to inspire sympathy or understanding. The "twist" at the end was entirely unearned.

So, here's my biggest gripe with this one, and you could probably chalk this one up to personal taste, but I'm gonna say it anyway. I wish they could've tweaked the plot progression system a little bit more. Let me explain. As Yahtzee mentions, the plot progression is based on "Resistance Points" which you acquire via story missions, outpost liberation, etc. As you gather resistance points in one of the three regions you reach a given threshold (Resistance Levels) that triggers a special story mission in which you get captured by that region's leader (John, Faith, or Jacob). Running parallel to this is the level of cult activity you see in the region. As your Resistance level goes up in a region, you see less and less supply trucks, cult VIPs, hostages to free, essentially stuff you randomly run into when wandering around. This activity makes exploring interesting, are fun to engage in, and a degree of tension to the gameplay. However, engaging in them also nets you Resistance points, not many, but they add up. When you finally get to the point where you kill the cult leader in a particular region, all the "random" cult activity just vanishes, with only unfinished side missions and outposts left. It's worth mentioning as well that a lot of story missions unlock "specialists," NPCs with different skills that you can order around, which I find to be genuinely fun to wander around and work with, therefore I would like to have all the story missions in a region sorted before I take on the side stuff. These story missions, however, earn you a ton of Resistance points, and after you kill the leader, whatever side missions or story missions you have left just don't feel believable because the atmosphere generated by the random cult activity is no longer there. My point is, as refreshingly organic as this plot progression system is, it limits, to some degree, the amount of fun I can have with the game. Blowing up roadblocks is fun. Stealing supply trucks is fun. I don't want to have to choose between the random stuff and missions. I feel like the simplest solution would be to either decrease the amount of Resistance points the random stuff gets you, so you can do more of it without worrying as much about how much of it your doing, or increasing the number of points to increase your Resistance level. Now I can understand that there was a method behind these specific design choices because that, for this system to work, a certain balance is needed to both retain the organic feel to it and let the player feel like they're making progress. I also understand such a balance can be extremely difficult for developers to get right. But as the game is, right now, this progression system brings with it a level of constraint that I personally wish wasn't there.

My main gripe about the game is the way story missions progress. I like the idea of advancing to the next stage of the story based on how much you've disrupted the enemy; that aspect was cool. What I didn't like was that it automatically started the next main story mission as soon as you got to that stage. Just make the mission available, don't railroad me. I'll advance the plot when I'm good and ready, thank you very much.

Spoiler Warning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alright. So, I dont understand. They could have made room for some Kefka Esque ending. The world is destroyed, it's you and the father. Well, there are about 5 thousand bunkers. Someone should have survived. How about make it so you have to watch the new order grow. Either join him or rebuild a resistance. Now you have to go to all the bunkers you were just in and recruit people. Something. Just being tied to the bed for poop hole pleasures is kinda... lame. Give us some reason to go and get all the perks and money. I like the nukes... but pepper it up. Give us some Metal Gear battle where you and the father have a shirtless punch match on a mech. Idk. I don’t really agree, it’s the “fallout 3” of farcrys. Not the best but popularized and mordernized the series. Farcry 5 is the best farcry imo, but that isn’t to say that others. My only real complaint are the number of clone guns that are functionally the same in every way but appearance. Like really we need three versions of the first shotgun we aquire??? Or 3 variations of the mp5? By the time you buy the pre silenced gun your most likely already bought a silencer for an earlier variant and have the functionally same gun. Sorry just a little rant
