@Honudes Gai I mean in fairness Yahtzee isn't a cynic so much as he is a critic. There's a substantial number of games he has openly enjoyed that he's ripped to absolute -shreds- on the channel because it is, first and foremost, a critique. Take everything he says here as something said for entertainment value, unless he openly says the thing is absolutely wank. Usually when he calls something "wank" then it probably is. This was essentially my concern as I grew older. I loved little big planet, and dreamed of building the best levels ever, but why bother committing to that when I can spend the same energy and effort learning industry standard creative tools that will directly carry on to career opportunities. This issue pops up anytime a game with creative tools appear. I felt the same way about Wolfire game's Overgrowth and it's creative tools. They tend to hit that uncanny valley where the tools are just complex enough that it takes too much effort to justify mastering them rather then investing the same time and effort on actual creative tools. The one saving grace of Dreams is that they intended the process to be collaborative. So one person can just play to create music on their off time, another one can create assets, and another one can just code everything in in their spare time. But still, I'd never say "I wanna model something in Dreams" in my spare time when I can learn Blender or Maya.
@TheGeekRex4 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I can't play anything like LBP or Minecraft or the like anymore. As soon as I realized as a kid that I could make my own games that can do ANYTHING I want just by writing some magic words, I couldn't go back to the relatively clunky, slow-paced game builders. I just found myself begging for programming again.
@kerricaine4 жыл бұрын
admittedly, i think the building tools can be a great way for people to get a basic understanding of programming and development. i remember as a kid playing age of empires level builder, and being introduced to how flags, "if/and/or" and other things like that worked.
@TheD7364 жыл бұрын
When I was young I used StarEdit, a starcraft 1 map editor. It’s pretty complex but it was accessible enough for me. To me saying “Creativity games are useless because you could just use actual programming” is like saying “Why use an etch-a-sketch when you could use a pencil and ruler”. Maybe it’s not a matter of making some profound fucking piece of art. Creativity doesn’t revolve around what skills are useful or not. Unfortunately dreams has a centralized server and someday all that art will inevitably die, but my point is that learning to use a tool in a creative way is just as much a fun time as it is a way to stretch the way you see games or reality, and can absolutely be gateway into other things.
@Deliveredmean424 жыл бұрын
What funny about that, others will, in fact, do it in Dreams. Dreams like other limited game/dev tool product like Net Yaroze did gave you an idea on how game dev works and get their ideas going just as effectively or even more so than big name game engine. Some people who will try Dreams may never achieve greatness like many things in life, but like some of the games and showcases in dreams, those who do take the step and be consistent in their work it gave people the opportunity what be creative. Heck, if anything, I heard Media Molecule are hiring those people who made impressive games, designs and the likes. Heck, who can't say those games people had created in Dreams become actual products in the future? Sure, it can get complex, but don't underestimate people's capabilities. There will be poeple that WILL use every single tools available. They manage to recreate so closely to some games from the past, and even create new ones in a span of weeks to even a year (early adopters).
@gungriffon2204 жыл бұрын
Truth be told, there's not many ACTUAL level design toolsets out there, and those that exist are for incredibly ancient games or very specific indie ventures. Level design has become almost exclusively a 3D Modeller's job, and building things has a big tendency towards "well I can't make this pretty or functional in Unreal/Unity, time to import into Blender and do slow iterative tests for weeks on end" It's kind of astounding how few serious tools are developed for this particularly important step of the process, and how much import-export-reimport has to happen to get anything done. Though I definitely agree that I way prefer to model and animate in a real program than do this sort of thing. It's just not worth it unless you can export it out and use it as a prototype/block-out.

@@Deliveredmean42 He also very deliberately ignores that Dreams can appeal to people who don't know they want to learn how to code, or have never been placed in a situation where they're exposed to the kind of thinking you need to be good at it. When I was 13 I didn't *want* to 'learn to code', I wanted to 'make a game'. And Little Big Planet 2 let me do that, while giving me a cursory understanding of Logic so when I started to code proper I had a leg up. Dreams is trying to do the same to current 13 year olds. And trying to act like giving people like that the platform they want is a bad thing is Gatekeeping of the *highest* degree.

@@Rot_Soft I didn't get that takeaway at all. It sounded more like the criticism is that you are basically coding, making assets, etc in a way that is harder than doing it the traditional way...so why learn to use an inferior tool that ends up being limiting when you can just bite the bullet and learn the ools which are streamlined and industry standards. Like end of the day the amount of time and effort spent in dreams to make something would yield more doing it in Unity or GMS2...meaning the only pro is the collaboration features which itself can be overcome by actually becoming a part of a community of developers, designers, etc making it not even as strong of a selling point as some may initially believe.

However, I feel compelled to say that, on days when I think of ending it all, I remind myself that (a) my daughter still needs me, and (b) I'd never get to watch another Zero Punctuation. Last week we had "like a pistol shrimp taking a course in native African languages", and this week we get, "like cleaning a bathroom floor with the eyelashes of a horse". I'm trying to think of anything else that has been this consistently funny, engrossing, and entertaining for this long, and...no, I've got nothing. Sincere thanks to you, Yahtzee. Well, yes! Dreams is a fancy intro to coding (and game design, 3d modeling, music writing, etc.). Its USP, in my opinion, is the extremely efficient collaboration-remix system. If a creation has remix permissions toggled, anyone can peer into the inner workings of that creation, change whatever they want, and re-release it as their own thing, while automatically giving front-cover attribution to the original -- as well as the original's constituent parts.

"Yahtzee, do you have Dreams?" Of course I have dreams. I dream of the day you stop breaking into my house to ask me stupid questions; I dream of finding a commercial-grade air freshener that covers the smell from the basement. "No, I mean, do you have Dreams on the PS4, the new game - well, game-tangent creativity experience - by the people who made LittleBigPlanet, who appear to be trying to pull off the same scam where they get young creatives to pay to make their content for them? Dreams is the next logical step from LittleBigPlanet in that instead of just making levels for a slightly twee platformer, you can now make entire slightly twee games from the ground up with a suite of inbuilt art, animation, and coding tools." I assume people have been asking me to cover this thing partly because I'm an established hobbyist game designer currently doing a side series in which I pledge to make twelve games in twelve months the way a small child goes, "Hey, everyone, look at me!" just before they crack themselves in the eye with a rock, but partly, I suspect, because a lot of people started up Dreams, watched the intro sequence, and then said, "Someone really needs to piss all over this." So that's what I'm going to do, Media Molecule; I'm going to piss all over your Dreams. And if you called it that to make me feel bad about pissing all over it, then you obviously don't know me very well. The intro and tutorial dialogue has the tone of a kindergarten teacher handing out gold stars to everyone for all being equally special. "Welcome to a magical universe of your very own, where you can realize your wildest imaginings, as long as they're slightly twee!" Bitch, I can realize my wildest imaginings with a blank wall and a handful of shit! You didn't invent creativity; the invention of creativity occurred in 1988 when Robert Zemeckis directed Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and you don't look much like Robert Zemeckis. The next step in our creativity journey is to play the example game, a game about a broody jazz musician going through a symbolic odyssey of self-doubt after someone mildly criticizes him, which makes me think he should hang out with Kay from Sea of Solitude so they can have fun getting the fuck over themselves together. But because it's a showcase, it has to contrivedly switch between noir adventure and cartoon platformer and various other setpieces and musical numbers, which makes it a bit of a tonal dog's breakfast, especially when the protagonist uses the word "shit" at one point, which I took special note of, because it was quite a lurch for the established family-friendly vibe. Don't tell me "shit"'s been downgraded; I hate having to update my swear matrix. I guess it doesn't matter, since the sample game's only purpose is to say, "Hey, we made this in Dreams, and so could you!" Yes, Media Molecule, I suppose I could, just as soon as I, too, have access to a studio full of industry-standard professionals and pay them all a salary, but considering you expect me to release it for free on your network, I might prefer to reserve my cash for something with a better return of investment, like heroin. So it's not exactly inspiring; it's like giving someone a bucket and spade and then lecturing them on the history of industrialized strip mining. I went through some tutorials and fair's fair, it is an extensive suite of 3D art tools and drag-and-drop coding systems that could potentially realize a lot of complex visions. But the big question that I keep coming back to is, why bother when I could just do all this on PC with a mouse and keyboard, rather than having to relearn basic drag-and-drop skills with a PS4 controller like a man clumsily attempting to remove Tinker Bell's bra? "Oh, Yahtzee, you crumbly old gaming insider, you've got it all wrong! Of course it's not trying to compete with commercial game creation tools; it's a creativity toy for the kiddywinks to get their coding feet wet in between naps and demands for McDonald's." See, I just think it's too complex for that. You're talking about it being like playing with Lego; I say it's more like playing with Lego with a pair of remote-controlled animatronic hands with a 200-page operators' manual. Once these drag-and-drop engines go past a certain level of depth, I feel like they can't be that much easier than just learning to code, as I struggle to memorize a new language of icons and seriously chafe Tinker Bell's nipples trying to line up a cuboid. I feel like making a game in Dreams would be like cleaning a bathroom floor with the eyelashes of a horse: impressive, yes, but there were much easier ways. And you'll have very little use for all that horse-wrangling expertise you had to learn if you want to move into cleaning bathroom floors on a professional level, even more so after Sony inevitably decides it can't be bothered to support clean bathroom floors anymore and turns the servers off, sending everyone's hard work right down the bathroom drain. Yes, I have completely lost the fucking thread of this metaphor. But what of playing the games? What of being the societal parasite in the Objectivist utopia that is Dreams? The content is arranged like the layers of a trifle made by dementia patients: it starts at the top with the cream, mostly Media Molecule's example games made, as discussed above, by professionals being paid money. Then under that, the custard, the hand-picked smattering of decently-playable games made by earnest creatives, presumably mostly bedridden and with nothing else to do all day but count the ceiling tiles. And then under that comes everything else, a bottomless ocean of ranch dressing and polystyrene, mostly games consisting of two buildings plonked on an empty field and released as "super early pre-alpha test demo for the epic open world sandbox action RPG I'm totally going to make after I break both my legs and the ceiling tiles lose their allure", about fifty percent of which feature Sonic the Hedgehog. But that's all to be expected, and no reason to be discouraging; I made sure to leave a like on the small number of games that I felt got into the right spirit of things, offering nice, straightforward gameplay loops, occasionally even original ones. And as I looked around at the colorful menus and the careful curation algorithms at work, I found myself thinking, "You know, it'll be a real shame when this all gets taken over by perverts." These things always are, Media Molecule; the Sonic the Hedgehog fans are the warning sign. Now, Sonic fans aren't necessarily perverts; basketball players aren't necessarily tall, but it fucking helps! Sooner or later, they bring in that one character who's a bat with tits, and the furries have got a foot in your door. Remember Second Life? Once a lovely, wholesome attempt at a community-created online world of imagination, now just zebra dicks and yiff piles as far as the eye can see. The earnest creators will all return or graduate to more efficient systems once the novelty wears off, and then all your fancy 3D art tools are so much fantasy penis-shaping equipment. What are you going to do, screen all incoming content for the rest of your fucking life? Smarter and more dedicated people than you have tried to hold back the masturbators, and the masturbators always win, probably 'cos they've all the stamina. See, this happy-clappy "everyone's special" approach just isn't preparing the kiddywinks for the realities of life as a creative: stress, rejection letters, audience indifference, the frustration when someone makes twice as much money as you just from drawing nipples on Princess Sally Acorn.
