I find that you do repairs the same way a lot of us do... if it ain't broke, don't fix it! You make good decisions on how you spend your money. I watch your videos for the entertainment AND to see how you fix things. I mean I've never worked on a 80s Dodge W100, but I find it interesting to watch you do the repairs. There are a whole hell of a lot of folks who wish they had your mechanical sense and abilities. Keep up the good work!

The ammeter was bypassed because this era of gauge is notorious for getting hot, melting and starting electrical fires under the dash. Bypassing the gauge is pretty common in these trucks.

Word of caution. that ammeter SHOULD NOT BE HOOKED UP! they are notorious for burning down trucks thats why it was unhooked. on these trucks and other mopars of the same vintage , the entire electrical system with the exception of the starter draws its power thru the ammeter. could be 35+ amps flowing thru it under certain circimstances. Its not worth loosing the truck just to have an ammeter working. its a very good idea to unhook it and do the bypass so as to distribute the electrical load around this wiring and eliminate the possibility of an electrical fire. it could occur even if the truck isnt being driven if something were to be drawing power. I drive a 74 dodge powerwagon and i damn near lost my truck from the ammeter. i wasnt even in the truck it had been parked for several hours and i started smelling electrical. i looked around and seen my cab was smoking profusely and the cluster was on fire. i was able to get the battery unhooked just in time . had i not been home or near the truck it surely would have burned to the ground. theres lots of good schematics on the internet showing you how to bypass the ammeter.

I agree with you. My '79 I bought on cheap because it had a dash fire from that same spot. A friend of mine helped to rewire everything in the dash and than some later and the truck was back on the road. I had 3 wonderful years with it before rust took it away. I was the 2nd owner. The first owner new got the undercarriage cleaned after winters. When the front frame rails rusted and broke it, was time to put her down. I miss that beast.

Nice rig. I like that you pay attention to the little details that aren’t really noticeable until they don’t work like the alt meter and other gauges I think that’s what will sell it. At $4800 you shouldn’t have any trouble selling it. $1800 on your dad’s gas pumps is a good deal also, all lit and ready to show.👍🏻

Hi Travis, Assuming the camper stopped running in 1998 from something non-catastrophic, I'm thinking it's a keeper. At least for one camping season. It's clean, powered by a 440 and has AC!! i like this truck! my 1st truck was a ('74/'75/'76?) Dodge 'Club Cab' long bed, the fancy model with two-tone paint in Tan & Gold, beat up and a bit rusty with a missing tailgate. i had a neighbor that recently bought out a local junk yard so i went by to see if he had a tailgate. he had 'inherited' an old guy that had been working there for many years that said, 'we got one but you get to dig it out!' so i did .... it was inside an old van that was packed literally to the roof with tailgates, bumpers, tail lights, hubcaps, etc. etc. 'my' tailgate was actually on the floor! about 2 1/2 hours later i had my piece and had everything packed back in there ... in 90+ degree humid South Carolina afternoon full sunshine. the tailgate was in near-perfect shape, (yay!) but it was green! (yuck!)

The reason the ammeter was disconnected is that they are a MAJOR fire hazard on these tin grilles. I'd take the wires off asap.....Nice truck 👍🏼

My guess is the truck was driven over some rocks that deformed the plastic gas tank, but while the plastic shell was pressed in it bent the sending unit components.

This truck reminds me of my '79, 3/4 ton. 2 wheel, 4 speed granny low. 318 under the hood. That thing was a beast. Really miss that girl. edit to add. PPE. You should be using that. Stay healthy now and that will help you stay healthy when you are older. Your kids will thank you for it.

Try using a nut driver or socket instead of a screwdriver on hose clamps. It’s life changing!! I’ve injured my hand when the screwdriver slips off…..😮

19:51 Ford power steering pumps whine when the wrong fluid is put in them. They were designed to use transmission fluid, not power steering fluid. Car owners and Jiffy Lube employees who don't know that put power steering fluid in the pumps when they are low which makes them whine.

Great video! I just acquired a 78 C200 Prospector, 3/4 ton. I was wondering what to do with the gas tank. Your video gave me a lot of ideas for how to take care of the old gas(which isn’t much) in the plastic tank. I really don’t want to drop the tank, so I’m considering, siphoning it out, adding fresh gas, and changing the filter often, until it runs clear.

Burn the old gas a little bit at a time in the 12 valve. I burn all my old stale gas a little bit at a time thru the 12 valve mixed with old oil

When working on these new style trucks a lot of times its was easier to pull the box of the chassis with your engine cherry picker or chain block, usually only held on with half dozen bolts. Then you can do all brake lines fuel lines fuel pump, shocks, everything is done from above and not crawling around on the ground. You can also pressure wash everything before you start and don't have to suck in rat turd dust the whole job.

Really enjoy your videos but please be careful using torches around gas tanks a good friend of mine lost a family member doing the same thing you did heating up gas tank strap mounts for removal and there was a vapor leak of some sort that found the torch and exploded killing him so please be careful I was cringing the whole time watching. I do really enjoy your channel, I love doing this stuff myself and spend evenings watching yours and similar videos. Dave

Rebuild that steering box coupler. I had to do that on my 84 W150 when I bought it. It was being held together with bailing wire. Rebuilding it got rid of a lot of slop too.
