Its a good move by GoPro to entice the entry-midrange action cam consumer into buying their device, but IMO they need to add more features. More competition is a good thing for us, and for companies not to get lazy and just rehash a product with minor upgrades.

I actually bought a hero session, and I get way more pro tunes controls and super view. Down side is 1080 at 60fps. But honestly 60fps can still provide for decent slow motion shots. I surf with mine and it’s still pretty smooth.

Since it is already waterproof, it would be nice if the body was threaded to mount it to standard thread tripods, etc.. so you didn't have to put it on a separate case just to mount it to something.

I wouldn't. You can currently get a Hero 5 Black for $249, they were reduced after this video came out. The extra $50 is well worth it for the extra features.

Hello. I'm in England and I bought this GoPro cam & Head Mount Today. My First impressions are The Instruction Manual in the box is not very informative (I had to hit the Internet for answers to basic questions). Thus far, I've not been able to find a PDF Instruction Manual for this product. When I go to the Image Stabilization setting it is not clear when this setting is active or not. Also, I'm not certain of this cameras features, EG: Does it support Wind Noise Dampening like other GoPro models. Overall I'm quite pleased with it BUT I would like to have seen better user instructions/support.

But it's waterproof right out of the box without a case (which none of the budget cameras are) and rugged (which none of the budget cameras really are), so there is that. To some that might be worth the extra $100 if it's your first time getting a budget camera, that being said if you already have a budget camera such as any of the Yi's then is this one worth it as you probably already have a waterproof case and all the goodies, probably not.

Have you had any issues with any of your Yi cameras so far? Would you recommend the Yi 4k if I wouldn't be using the stabilization and just using it for the video quality or is there something better? I've been using 1 canon g7x & 3 sjcam4000's for like 3 years now mounted on a Samson MK-10 boom mic using their frame mount + a 1/4 male to female thread - And they still work fine (though I don't know if one is a fake or not, but it still works lol) BUT, one of my cameras gave out on me the other day.. I think I've narrowed it down to these, but if you know something else that would fit my needs better Please let me know. Cuz if the one I get is way better than my Sjcam's then I might get 2 more (so, cost is a factor) GoPro Hero 5 Black refurbished = $220 each ($170 after $50 trade in for my sjcam4000) Yi Lite = $100 -- as seen in many videos from The Everyday Dad Yi-4K (not 4K+) = $150 from their website...but no trade in offered. *I do like that the GoPro Hero 5 Black has the Linear mode (cuz fish eye looks weird on drums), but didn't know till now that Yi 4k has basically the same thing! **I also use Screenflow 7, if that makes a difference with those cameras above. These will be for KZbin drum videos, SO... 1. I don't really need stabilization (unless it will help with #6) 2. I don't need great audio (I get that edited) 3. Great vid quality in 1080p 30fps, 60fps Max (if I feel like it would look cool to use 60fps) 4. Good in "low-light" situations (filming in a living room without room lights on, using 2 neewer 176 led lights pointed on me & drums) 5. Adjustable ISO, Exposure, White Balance, etc 6. I've noticed my bass drum does cause the video to shake with my Canon G7X (1st one, not mark 2), but that could just be because it's heavy while attached to my boom stand. 7. I have a HERO I bought for $125 around Xmas time in 2018. It says HERO on the side, no number anywhere on camera or box or manual. I just bought it because of the price and because I had bought one early on when GoPro was almost unknown that cost me much more and with less features, so... I am old and will never ride a bike or climb a mountain. What did I buy? I am doing time lapse videos but it seems it can only do 0.5 sec. intervals Is that right? The time lapses go too fast!! Why didn't they identify it better? So far I am liking it a lot-for what it is.... But I can make time lapses easier with a 7Plus, at the rate I want and with better battery length. And great resolution! the only advantage I see is how small it is and with a USB extender to attach to the car USB and one of the stickies it can be used as a dash camera. Also as a surveillance camera... Nice it can take a 128 Gb SD card. Nice review, but other than this, I cannot differentiate this camera from the others and furthermore, whats the difference in specs among all of them?? We need a chart!!! GOPROOOOOOO!

Excellent video and a great review of the camera. I currently have the Hero 5 Black and I am looking for a secondary camera for multiple angles when filming on Harleys and when offroading in a Jeep. I am having an internal debate between running the current Hero 5 Black as the primary camera and getting the Hero (2018 Edition) as the secondary cam, or adding the Hero 6 Black as the primary camera and moving my current Hero 5 Black to the second camera roll. I only post video to social media in 1080p. How does this action cam compare with the footage on the Mavic Pro? $200 seems like a good price if you never use 4k anyway... I'm not even sure my MacBook Pro can process 4k, I've never tried to save it in processing for social media. I use DaVinci Resolve 14 for processing my drone footage. It does have a 2160p option, but I don't use it? I don't think 2160p is the same as 4k, I think it's considered UHD. Am I wrong?

I would LOVE a head to head with that Yi 4K and this GoPro Hero in terms of very loud audio, like at a concert...I find that at least the lower end Yi cams have terrible audio, but the GoPro still tops the field in that regard

Why cant they put a tripod screw on the bottom. If they put it in a waterproof case as you say but then you still have to put it in a frame to mount it, its defeating the object!

Recently bought a Yi light and have 7 more days to return it. Being waterproof out of the box is big deal to me. I like that in the water or around the water you don’t need a case which hinders on sound quality. Should I return it and get the new go pro?

If you need waterproof without a case then I'd go with the hero over the yi lite. That's the one thing that gopro really wins in.

For family videos I'd probably get the hero 5. It gives you more options over the footage and gives you things like linear view. That way you're not always stuck with a fish eyed video.

The Everyday Dad , thank you for your help. I checked out some videos and stills that show the difference between wide and linear and I see what you mean about reducing the curve. The only downside that I notice with linear is the loss of surface area, it makes it look zoomed in.

Please help. I have Gopro Hero 2018. When I record in slow motion, actually videos are recorded in ultrafast instead. Doesn't matter where I watch, on camera or on my PC after transfer, they are like x4 faster speed than normal, but not slow motion. Please tell me why?

When I saw this new GoPro was a lot cheaper then the likes of a hero 5 I was quite happy as I’ve been wanting a new one for a while but I’m quite disappointed that the image quality isn’t that good and I also found that out that it’s not Karma compatible which is a huge disappointment. I'm in a big dilemma.. Should I buy Session 5 or this one? Is the Session 5 image quality better at 1080p 60fps auto? If you make Session 5 review, than it will be a lot easier for me to choose. Having a display and changeable battery is good, but if the Session 5 image quality is better at same Hero 2018 settings, than it's probably better to take the Session 5. I also like the Session because of the weight, because there is a difference when you attach the camera on the helmet, which is how I use the camera. I am aggressive and adicted skier and I use my GoPro 60-80 days a season in different conditions that include -30 Celsius, mist and more. So don't shoot at 4K to save battery and memory, because in cold weather the battery drains faster. Also I don't use Protune because I am not professional at this settings and it takes time to change the settings in the cold weather when you want to ski as much as you can. So what will be your choice/advise @theeverydaydad?

It sounds like you would be best served with the session. The biggest negative if you don't need the screen would be the non removable battery. But I you can work around it I'd say the session would be best.

Really helpful review. I think you're the first to show the actual video quality. Note the 2018 GoPro Hero also does not have GPS. I think this a great buy for someone that absolutely wants a GoPro but can't afford the Hero5 Black or Hero6 Black and doesn't care for the Session. The deal killer with the Session for me has always been the non-removable battery. Overall, I still think the YI Lite is the better buy mainly because it's half the price of the GoPro Hero. Granted, the $20 waterproof case is not included with the YI Lite. This still makes it $80 cheaper than the GoPro Hero. In Canada, the Hero5 Black is only $80 more than the new Hero (at Costco).

timsmotorcyclediary They have the Yi lite with the case for under $100 all the time. I just got mine for $94 and am pretty pleased with it so far. The app works well and what I’m seeing is very good. This go pro for me is way too expensive for what you get. I bet the replacement lens cover is not very cheap. Take care, bill

Yeah I agree, I think the yi lite is the better budget camera, I just wish it was waterproof without a case. That would make it seriously epic.

Yeah I still think the yi is an amazing camera for what you pay for. The main advantage the gopro hero has is the durability and waterproofness without a case. The lens protectors are about $16 so not super cheap but it's pretty cheap insurance 😁👍

Also, why haven't you done any reviews on the Yi-4k? You have the GoPro hero which is 200$, but the Yi-4k is 150$..

A side by side with the hero 5 session? I use the session for it's low profile on my surfboard, I've not much use for a touch screen, but if it's better than the session, maybe it'll be worth upgrading? Thanks

I bet this is the hero 4 session in a hero 5 body. I dont know that you'd gain much by switching.
