Glad to see an appreciation for new “traditional” camcorders. Now retired from a career in video production, I sometimes smh at all of the pieces of equipment people have to pack onto their DSLR cameras making them heavy and awkward!! Obviously DSLRs with large sensors and interchangeable lenses have the advantage when shooting stills with great depth of field, but current semi-pro camcorders excel at the convenience of shooting lengthy video indoors and out (built-in neutral density filters!) and recording pro audio, be it via line level from a mixing board, XLR microphones or wireless mics. Thnx much for this review!!

Ugh i know right. I start off as a kid frankensteining my dslr with audio recorder and random accessories. God it was scary. A wedding video company i work for even have one of those stupid saramonic audio splitter failed on me. I hate those things in high risk jobs. Im in my 30s now by the time i upgrade to my sony x70 camcorders. I know when something is wrong with the camcorders and can change input manually in the body. I dont have things dropping off from the hotshoe mount of dslr and i can plug in to audio mixer and to wall power easily. Coming from a kid that once frankenstein his way in the job It just feels so much more nicer easing of mind to know your tools dont have multiple weak links that will fail you. Frankensteining should be used only in emergencies. Not the norm.

Same background, just not retired (yet), your post is so spot on. For the vast majority of any type of work, a quality camcorder like the XA50 will do nearly all anyone needs, efficiently and effectively with the least hassles. I’m also astounded at all the filmmaker wannabes who believe shallow DOF is everything. As if composition, lighting, telling the story with the camera, or content in story, acting, etc. weren’t as important. Study film history friends, there are a LOT of Oscar winning films with plenty of DOF in most shots, and not just the B+W classics like Citizen Kane.

I wrote off camcorders for DSLRs and Mirrorless because they are so 90's and soccer dad. But upon looking at them recently and comparing something like this XA50 to a mirrorless with cage + audio + DSLR monitor + powering all of it + choosing the right video settings... these start to become a compelling solution for people. Especially trying to recommend a video solution to someone that I KNOW doesn't have the level of interest we have in gear, they just want to film the family and occasional outings. Camcorders are definitely starting to have a place for my recommendations to people, which is so weird haha.

Cool! Vacation near me! And I entered the world of "production" digital video with a Canon Vixia R700 (I did have an SJCAM 4000+ WiFi before that) -- not many of the "Pro" features of the XA50 -- but it also cost a lot less, yet shot great 1080p. And back in the day when my kids were young, I had a tried-and-true Sony 8mm camcorder that lasted for 12 years and had great autofocus -- and was just *easy* to use. As you say -- it's all there. You don't need a camera bag/backback/wheelie-bag with 15 pockets to carry extra lenses, monitors, rigs, gimbals -- etc. It's all there -- and you can add on better mics if needed, and a few extras. But for run-and-gun, or vacations, impromptu "pick-up" video, it is definitely much quicker to get going than a hybrid with all of the extras.... Thanks!

For KZbin videos the quality looks stellar. Lots of DR and detail in the image. The image looks quite a bit better than the front camera you are currently using. The front camera has a more cinematic and flat feel to it but I don't think that's beneficial for KZbin work such as this. XA50 looks to fit the bill much better with it's realistic and highly detailed image.

Ronnie Wallin Looks like you’re the guy I need to talk to. I’ve been trying to decide between the XA50 & the XF400. I’m leaning towards the XF400 mainly because of the LCD screen. I really don’t care about 4K so much. The 1080 @ 120fps sounds interesting but I don’t like that the slo-mo in 120 is “baked in” so to speak. I’m a hobbyist that can tolerate going up a couple extra bucks. Been using a gopro on a sabilizer to make videos of myself on a Onewheel and Boosted board. Would like to start setting up up shots on the fly (using a tripod of course), so I figured that the XF or the XA would be great for this kind of run & gun sports work. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. BTW - I have a Canon 5DM4 with a host of nice lenses. But, I don’t want to take chances damaging that gear, not to mention the extra work involved in using a DSLR for my uses.

@@BrokenToeKnee The two are essentially the same camera. The 50 is slightly smaller and weighs a hair less. Personally, I'd rather have the 4k/60 available whether I planned on using or not. Being able to reframe a shot and downsample to 1080 for delivery is worth the difference IMHO. 4k/60 also provides fairly decent slo-mo, if you decide you need it during editing. For me, there's nothing about the xa50 that would make me switch to it over the 400. There's really no reason to rob yourself of the extra functionality over such a minuscule price difference.

When people complain about canon not offering enough for video I genuinely think they don’t realise they have a whole video & cinema range. The xa50 is a solid voice too!! Great video dude 🙌🙌

The lens equivalent of 25.5-382.5mm f/2.8-4.5 isn't too bad, but I'd like to see something in the 20mm range. It's odd that canon has 1" sensor technology with DPAF but apparently didn't use it in the G7X mk III.

Lance G - I considered the G60 as well. The price is right, dual pixel AF, etc. Then, I came across the XA50 with it’s XLR handle. I don’t care much about the XLR, but I like having the handle for run & gun shooting. THEN, I came across the XF400. The 400 has a better & bigger touch screen, dual processors and 4K 60p (which I’ll never use). So, I’m stuck trying to decide.

Amazing Videos Everyday Dad!!! I need your advice. I am filming a fan-made Survivor Reality TV show in the forest. You have raved about both this Canon XA50 and the Sony NX80. Which one do you prefer?? We are talking about armatures shooting people running through the bush here not pros in a studio, which is why I'm steering away from DSLR's or mirrorless interchangeable lenses cams. We're talking literal run-and-gun. Also what microphone would you choose for an application like mine? Thanks! Love this channel so much!

I'd need your help. I plan to get one camcorder like this, but I don't know it will have an option for recording with depth of field. I believe that I can take a picture with depth of field, but don't know the record will have it option. For example, taking picture, I can have 2.8 F and focus on the object, the other object will be blurred, what about recording? can it have that feature? May you please advise?

I considered a camcorder for 4K before i bought the A7iii but i do like to take photos, so i just went with wireless mic stereo mic, and shotgun/zoom mic. Isnt that XLR handle an attachment? by that logic all sony cameas from the A6000 to the A9 support the same kind of accessory with the sony XLR-K2M, which is basically the same thing, but smaller, and has a mount for a shotgun mic. Whats the difference other than one can support the wight of the camera? the XLR handle for the canon Might* be included with the camera, but with the A6400 and the XLR-K2M you come in under the shown price of the canoncorder (with a 16-50mm lens) but for that cheaper price, you an option for zoom lenses, lenses with a built in variable ND filter, and wide apeture lenses, in a more compact form factor assuming you arent using telephoto and or large apeture. Add a battery grip and you might get better battery life than the canon, and you also get 1080p 120, just wish it had 720p240 And in case you were wondering, mathematically a 4K30 video, has close to the same bitrate as 720p270 acording to kramer-AV's signal bandwidth calculator, ignoring the audio channel(s) on both sources

I was told the XA45 is ok for Filming fast moving Aircraft, what they don't tell you is they say you should use a Tripod or Gimbal to get steady footage, too late as i already bought one, When filming Fast Aircraft the Camera image starts to shake using handheld, this ids really not good enough Canon.

I really wish this camcorder came a built in light and 4.2.2, 10 bit 4k. I'm torn between this camera and the Panasonic XC 2000. Yes the Canon has a 1 inch sensor, but the panasonic has 1.8/F, built in light, the better 4k file, streaming capable, and is a few hundred dollars less. Upgrading to the XA55 gives you the streaming but everything else is the same. Would love if someone could do a side by side "unedited" in post, comparison of the two.

For a run and gun setup, sure, this might work. I prefer DSLR setups more because as of today they are the closest thing to a cinema camera at a consumer-level price. They offer amazing tools also (zebra, histogram, log, depth of field, etc). And you will always get better audio from an audio dedicated recorder so not having XLR input on a DSLR setup isn't a dealbreaker. Another thing is video codec... On this camcorder, the codec won't be as strong meaning that color grading isn't very flexible and low light is very hard to achieve well. I think you should compare this camera with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema 4K and see which one you like better. The BMPCC4K easily dominates and excels at these features. So to conclude, if you're a run and gun videographer, sure this might be a good option. If you're a filmmaker (advanced or amateur) a DSLR might be a better choice. For stabilization, DJI Ronin S or Ronin M or glidecam paired with lens or IBIS works amazingly well. Just because one requires more effort to look good doesn't mean it isn't doable. A majority is going to hire the one that does each step well, not the one that hopes to get it right all in the camera with no post-processing required.

Would you recommend the XA50 for someone trying to start a wedding videography business? I have always been a camcorder person but everyone shoots weddings with DSLR and mirrorless. I have never used those kinds of cameras and the learning curve seems very steep and would infuriate someone like me. I am not trying to create the most cinematic wedding films ever, just great looking highlights that I can make a living from.

Probably the biggest achilles' heel video camera is it sensor size. If the sensor size is small, when filming any room with very low lights you'll have a lot of noise. On the other hand if you have a crop sensor with a 1.4 lens, you'll have a better shot.
@martinXY

You're right, of course. Everything is a tradeoff. The biggest plus for a camcorder is its versatility, meaning a good one will do many things well enough. If you have a particular use-case scenario, then a more appropriate set-up for that case should be used. Camcorders are great for events, corporate shoots, presentations, and quick one-person setups especially where you may not have as much control over the shoot as you'd like.

I had lots of issues with Canon XA20 Image Stabilization. When I held it very still the stabilizer would turn off, like it goes into tripod mode, which I turn of and run full manual setting. Do you know if this issue was fixed with the XA50? I tested it on the CF400, XA15 and XA35 and the problem was on all these models? I'm about to buy a new camera, and decided on the Panasonic hc-x2000.

Sounds pretty good. The DP-AF is awesome. But I still think - when it comes to camcorders - the Canon XC10/XC15 is superior. It lacks DP AF, okay, but AF ist just working perfect on these cams. But it has C-log, higher bitrates and a different form factor which is also very good if you want to use it on a gimbal. But I must confess: Picture quality on the XA50 looks pretty good! Did you try to grade it to give it more of a cinematic look? Thanks for sharing!

@@TheEverydayDad -- I did not mention it in my main comment, but the "low-light" B-cam shots of you inside looked perfectly fine -- I didn't see any noise issues compared with any of your mirrorless cameras, and the footage to me did not look like "video" from a camcorder (typified by the older, analog, tape-based camcorders) -- if you had not said that you swapped in the XA50 for your B-cam, I would not have guessed at all.
