As the owner of a Production Company I have several pro video cameras, camcorders, DSLRs and even Hybrids like the Sonny RX10 series along with the obligatory specialty cameras and B shot Go Pros. In my experience a DSLR is not a real replacement for a pro camera for outdoor filming. I do a lot of events outdoors, like Surf contests, and watching people swapping lenses or having to quickly switch to a secondary camera with another lens while I'm just getting the shot is always fun. Also the second a little wind kicks up and blows sand into your lens or camera body while swapping in the field you are done for the day until you can clean it. Well, unless you want to grind sand and dirt into your moving parts and sensors. The only real advantage a DSLR has over a dedicated camcorder is the dept of field with a primary lenses but that can usually be fixed by just opening up the F-stop and backing up a little so you can zoom in for a blurry background. I also don't get the ease of use with the DSLR menu comment. They essentially have the same info in there. Just spend the 10 minutes to learn the menu layout.

I've been in the video production field for about 25 years and I never understood why all these younger videographers starting using DLSR cameras about 10 years ago. I just assumed it was because the more pro video cameras were too expensive. I've tried many times over the last few years to get into using a DSLR but it's so cumbersome and doesn't have xlr inputs. I'm glad the pro video camera is making some kind of a comeback. Look, most cameras these days look incredible down to your iphone so you can pretty much use whatever you want, unless you're shooting a film. I'm in the market for a new camera that shoots 4k and at this point It looks like i"m going to get the XA50. From what I've seen on youtube, it has everything I need. Thanks for the review.

Well it depends on what and how you want to shoot. Normally people who shoot cinematic shots don't use cameras with XLRs and instead use external devices to capture audio. I have a Zoom and capture my audio there while I capture my Cinematic shots with a digital cinema camera. I think one of the main reasons people liked the dslrs more is because of the handheld aspects. If feels nice to hold and if you want to get good shots use both hands to balance It out to get stable focused shots (at least that's how it was for me). I'd say cameras like these Camcorders are amazing and perfect for event shoots and Documentaries (my personal experience) I shot my 1st documentary on my XA30. Not my best film but still great that I had the perfect camera to work with that had everything. Another reason why I don't shoot audio together is if the SD card you shoot with is corrupted or if something isn't working in the camera (cuz anything can happen in a shoot) which makes you get footage without audio and that's never a good thing especially for a shoot that requires sound to be captured. All it's great to hear about how you've worked and stuff. Do you have any links to your works?

@@infinitesession5439 There are a lot of cinematic cameras that have XLR inputs, Canon C100, C300 Sony FX 6 and many more. I've been doing this for a long time and I've never had an SD card get corrupt. I always record audio straight to the camera but I'm usually a one man band. It's just easier that way. For me it's more natural to hand hold a video camera than it is a dslr. Everybody has their thing though. Everything on my channel was shot by me but most of it was shot with my iphone. Music videos were shot with video cameras. I've never used a dslr for video.

Thank you to the author for this review. The eternal problem for beginners is to find a universal camera that is perfect for all shooting. Alas, such a camera has not yet been created and is unlikely to be created in the near future )) This is my opinion of a film Director who has worked for 20 years on Central Russian TV channels, and as a photographer with 30 years of experience, published in well-known Newspapers and magazines in Russia and the United States. For low-budget video production, I recommend having a video camera and a hybrid camera in your Arsenal. Within the amount of $ 2,000, the best choice for shooting news reports and shows is the Sony HXR-NX80 or Canon XA 50. For producing music videos, documentaries, and low-budget ads, I would recommend GH5S. If you also do photography, my advice - the Fujifilm X-T4 or Lumix DC-S5. Why don't I mention the Sony Alpha a7S III? Because this camera is not so much better as more expensive )))

Thanks for the video. An important point to mention is that the camcorder can shoot indefinitely until either the memory card or battery runs out. There is no 29 minute and 59 second time limit on the camcorder whereas all DSLR cameras have that time limit for videos. So for long content videos, a camcorder is better suited for that.

Not all stills/video cameras have a 30 min limit, but many do. Camcorders typically don't have issues with heat while some hybrid cameras will overheat in some modes.

Those XA series cameras are really good. I used to use 2 x XA20's and they did the job great. I would recommend them to anyone who doesn't want to spend time learning how cameras work and never have to worry about focusing. Nice video T.E.D. 😎

I've been a Canon XA user for some time. XA20 and currently a XA11. So a BIG fan for all the reasons you mention. I shoot a lot of interviews and often the shooting location isn't optimal, so a head and shoulders shot with blurry background is the preference. Do you think the XA50 will give me a fairly blurred background (not DSLR or Mirrorless standard) but still not a background that's pretty much in focus. Cheers

Is there a way to turn down the in-camera sharpening in the XA50? Because I think the edges have a light aliasing to them. I think that's why the R looks a little more natural and less like phone footage.

The larger sensor is sexy, can't deny that. But the quality of life a camcorder brings to the table is invaluable. Superior audio is underrated among beginners and rightly sought after by pros, and built-in ND filters save you a lot of headaches. True, you can't switch lenses, but the one that comes with the XA50 is a really solid and versatile one. Factor in no recording limit and no overheating and you've got quite a deal on your hands, not mentioning the broadcast codecs.

I've spent two years in a TV Station working as an ENG Camera operator, on JVCs and Sony PXW cameras and let me tell you, I love my GH5 much more than I did these two. Sure, having a great form factor with essentially everything already in-camera, having internal NDs or SDIs is cool, but the image just doesn't compare.

D.C., you're in my neck of the woods... I love the look of Canon, but since I got the A6400 & even Lumix G7, I only use mine for intro & outro, color is great, but 4k, to me is so much more important & even if I spend $2000 with Canon, I can't even get good 4k... Great video, love the content...

After lugging my Fuji XH1 over hill and dale with monitor and all the assorted crap to make it really good (and I love it!), the XA50 makes a lot of sense. I could use a much cheaper and lighter tripod to make it fantastic outdoors. Most of my stuff is outdoors anyway.

It depends on what you aim to do with said video camera. That's an expensive ass camcorder to be recording your kid's soccer games/family bingo nights with. XA50 would maybe be more suited towards interviews or broadcast type material. Now when it comes to cinematic b-roll sequences, event montages, *insert anything artistic* the R will blow the XA50 out of the water due to the amount of artistic options it provides you.

You're right about the camcorder being in a different language. I'm not sure why canon and sony have made their prosumer camcorders so user unfriendly. Cameras like the xa50 and nx80 make AF so difficult compared to the mirrorless Cameras. I prefer a cinema camera or camcorder, but find myself using mirrorless for most things

I tested the XA50 at NAB 2019 and it still focuses slowly in low light. I was planning to upgrade from my XA30, but client don’t really care for 4K. So, I gonna hold off on the XA upgrade for a long while. The only other issue that you didn’t mention is weather seal. I wish there are pro level camcorders that are weather sealed, but sadly, only the consumer versions are. 😔

if i buy the xa 50 what would you use as a b cam? ease of use and similar color science being main factors. I also need to be able to livestream with it. The majority of my work is done outside filming rc airplanes, pretty sporty and a bit tricky. If YOU had to film RC Airplanes flying outside what would you choose. Keep in mind we generally have to fly these in a circle or racetrack pattern where on one side of the field we are blown out and the other side just right. Or the blown out side is now ok and the other side is way to dark? Cross dissolve anyone? lol thanks

Have a xa40 custom cage 5" 4k monitor wireless rode x2 + shotgun, encoder on back of 5" monitor. Fully portable live streaming through cell. Works perfect looks like a network broadcast picture with awesome pro sound. 1080 live from any cell tower. Weighs 11lbs without tripod, 3 handles.

How do you fault the EOS-R for a crop when the effective sensor size is still larger than the XA50? Just think of it as the X-A50 having a much larger crop across all recording modes...

The only problem I have with my XA25 is the not so easy availability of batteries, especially the 3rd party kind in my country and in my region of the Philippines. That is my only gripe. It is quite funny that the XA50 shares the same battery as with my XA25.

I was looking into buying the xa50 and was wanting to know If the zoom range increases when using 1080p since you are cropping into the cencor??? I have been doing a lot of research on both the xa50 and the Sony rx10 because I'm looking for an all around good camera that can zoom far. Its not an additional crop on the sensor for 1080p. I do think there is an extra electronic zoom function but I never use electronic zoom, its makes the footage look pretty bad. But this has a pretty serious optical zoom range already built into it.

I was told the XA45 is ok for Filming fast moving Aircraft, what they don't tell you is they say you should use a Tripod or Gimbal to get steady footage, too late as i already bought one, When filming Fast Aircraft the Camera image starts to shake using handheld, this ids really not good enough Canon.

The XA50 looks nice on the outside, but the footage has the hard shiny digital look to it, and the EOS-R looks extremely cinematic in comparison. There is a huge difference in quality, from the default footage. Have you been able to make cinematic videos from the XA50, because it looks impossible to make the footage look "cinematic" based on the little bit of test footage I've seen.

Here's to the dad's of the world celebrating at camcorders becoming cool again :D Seriously though, Canon's X & C Range are immense for video shooters and are the primary reason why the hybrid dslr/mirrorless cameras they bring out have some limited functionality when it comes to video. Canon feel like they need to protect their video camera range and as a user of both the C100 & XC15 I'm glad, because their video cameras are awesome!

Unsolicited Advice 100% !!! I went this way, first of mirrorless cameras in line with the actual Canon RF strategy is the right move, second the image quality and autofocus are stellar, as well as the ease and f use and touch screen. My favorite camera (I also have a Sony a6400 that I use for 120fps mostly, everything else is better on the Canon).

I still think that a camcorder looks more like a "cinema" camera than a mirrorless/DSLR does. Call me old-school -- or just plain old (I'm 56). Yes -- the proof is in the pudding, and mirrorless/DSLRs have been producing cinematic results for years now, but they just don't *look* right when in use for that! :-) Whereas a camcorder does -- at least it looks more like a real "movie" camera! But when using one, more people are going to think, "OK -- video-Dad on vacation with the wife and kids, shooting shaky, blown-out videos that no one will ever watch!!!"

@@TheEverydayDad -- well, with that almost-log profile and some serious post-production color-grading, I bet that you could get really cinematic footage out of it, regardless of the sensor size. The sharpness is there, and many professional cinema cameras (even back in the days of film) had built-in ND filters -- so, the AX50 is really not a "camcorder" in the pure, "home movie" sense of the term -- it is much more of a hybrid camcorder/compact cinema camera. Most people aren't getting "home movie" videos with stereo XLR microphones! So yet another feature much more in line with professional cinema cameras. That's no mistake by Canon -- they are creating an interesting hybrid that there are a few other examples of (other almost pro-level camcorders) -- but at a pretty OK price point (not a steal by any means). And frankly run-and-gun shooting works much better with the form-factor of a camcorder than a mirrorless/DSLR in a rig, with mics, and stuff -- the camcorder design is much more natural for that. Cool! I'll take two! Oh right, can't afford even one! :-)

@@aengusmacnaughton1375 I wouldn't say the Ax50 is anywhere near pro, just because it doesn't have a good sensor, or quality glass, while sure it does have XLR, as some people mentioned, it's a broadcast camera, and not in any sense a pro camera, it's mostly just suited for news recording, a pro camera in this range suited for video, would be c100i, c200i, c300i, and maybe c100ii, oh and if course the Sony a7sii (that camera was specifically made for video) gh5 (that one too) and the almighty BMPCC4K, those are pro level cameras with full fat features, raw recording, or close to raw and interchangable lenses suited for high end production, and not just a small news network camera. And to me, not the camcorder does not look more like a pro cam, but more of a dad cam, and a fully decked out hybrid would personally attract me much more, even as a client, I would rather have whoever I'm hiring film with a hybrid, over a camcoder....

Lastly I can take photos using the photo word in my touch screen, or using the joystick or using the included remote control. I was able to photograph the moon and far away islands. If my XA25 can take 3 megapixel photos that XA50 can take 8 megapixel photos. These XA line of cameras are made especially for run and gun situations like news reporting, documentary like with the cinema features and document events for hours and hours without record limit. Remember that the camcorder has included AC adaptor?

Hey Gary, Wow, this review took me completely off guard with you liking the XA50. Yes, the XA50 does need a large sensor and better resolution, and if it did you maybe adding it to your studio collection. The size of the XA50 is the one other thing that would make me hesitate in buying just a camcorder. As you know, I'm a big Canon fan, way back to the good ole 35mm film days, and I do mean ole, LOL! Surprisingly this was a perfect matchup of two cameras to review as one person studio/YT rigs. As always, thank you for your fair and balanced reviews, take care!

kwakthisway go for it ! The eos R is a fantastic camera you won’t regret it; it’s a huge step up from the SL2. You can get it from US sellers on eBay for $1500 it’s a great deal. Image quality and autofocus are stellar and the ease of use with the touch screen is just like an iPhone.

Quick tip I learned years ago. If you want better DOF with the video camera, back way off of the subject and zoom in. Presto, shallow depth of field.

It's funny because I asked myself the same thing. My Sony zv-1 has a shallower depth of field because of its 1" sensor and if the Canon XA50 does too, why in video it appears to be non? Weird.

I own and use a Nikon D5000 and Canon XA25 and I don't have a problem. Do you see the tiny fly by wire ring near the hinge. There is a customizable button there that you can toggle to 3 functions. I think Canon modify little of the functions and layout of their pro cameras so that the people who use them will not get lost with sudden changes.

This camera is much better than the R at shooting, it is better in most cases than any photo camera.

XA50 is not a pro camera, it's a camera for filming kids soccer games. Tiny 1' sensor etc.

The footage from the xa 50 looks so bad in comparison to the eos R IMO

I really wish the footage looked good from the XA50. Back in 2008, digital cameras did not record good quality video. But now, the video quality from video cameras is far worse than still cameras! This is a weird time we are in. The manufacturers need to stop producing garbage, and give us better video cameras. Video cameras should actually produce good video. But they don't. When filming sharp edges with the XA50, you can see a type of weird interlacing distortion. The camera also looks to have extremely low dynamic range, as everything is way over exposed, and washed out, and it has that really shiny "digital" look to the footage. The dedicated video cameras are far better for low file size home videos, fast action sports (no rolling shutter due to less megapixels), and fast motion, as well as interviews and audio. But for stationary controlled studio environments without fast motion, they just don't have any image quality.

in 2008, many camcorders shot excellently and much better than DSLRs of that time and newer ones. Now video cameras also give a much better result in 90% of cases and this camera is not a mistake, it shoots perfectly, and the test is not entirely successful, you need to be able to set it up

Plenty of pro ENG cameras have built in lenses. Speed of operation and focus are priority

Yes but this is not photography. This is video streaming. Image and most of all sound make the presentation. DSLR is for still photos. DSLR gave you video but that will overheat in just a few hours of taking video. Dslr is not designed for videos.
