The mistletoe could rather be a symbol for the spontaneous eruption of chaos, then new order. Instead of slowly growing from the ground it exploits a weakness in the established canopy and grows new greenery. Excessive order brings about its own ruination, and chaos brings about new order. Loki is a jester, an archetype of transformation. Also, isn't there an appreciable similarity between Frøya and her son Balder, and the greek goddess Thetis and her son Achilles?

Loki is a sugar coated morality tale. "If you misbehave, children, these are the natural consequences". Notice that Loki never breaks an oath. His stories are predicated on this fact. Loki is not Evil. None of the Gods and Goddesses are evil in the monotheistic sense. They are our family. There is usually a Loki in every Manaheim family.
@scouttyra
@scouttyra 6 жыл бұрын
It was christians who needed to divide the legends into black and white, and possibly turning Ragnarok from a possible tale of circular rebirth into a tale about an apocalypse and the possible rise of a single God (baldur resurrecting during/after Ragnarok and being a god of light).

@RavnDream Not all of it, but the idea of Ragnarok as a final end is more Christian propaganda iirc
@wiseferret4745

If anything, Christian monotheism was derived from the events of Ragnarok. After everyone's dead, Baldr, God of love, happiness, sunshine, and rainbows, is resurrected to become the one God of a new world, inhabited by 2 people.
@jacobhatcher5409
@jacobhatcher5409 4 жыл бұрын
@@wiseferret4745 bold claim but not an historical one. Christianity had been around for centuries before the norse myths were written down. More likely, Baldurs resurrection at Ragnarok was the result of Christian monks trying to rewrite Norse myth.
@wiseferret4745
@wiseferret4745 4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobhatcher5409 No my friend. Norse mythology had been around for centuries before Christians recorded their myths. The stories of the Aesir and Vanir, the Jotunns, and the Voluspa are pre-christian, but do not outdate Vedic or Abrahamic religion. After all, Hinduism is over 4000 years old, and Judaism is over 3000 years old, and they are the 2 oldest beliefs in the world. There are several historical documents as old as 551AD that prove that the Norse recorded their mythology in runes around 400AD, before Christianity came to Norway or Iceland. But not necessarily before Judaism. I've also read that Norse beliefs come from Germanic beliefs, as recorded by Tacitus around 90AD, who was also the first non-Christian historian to confirm that the execution of Jesus Christ did happen and is historically significant to Rome. Since we found the shroud of Turin we know he was right. I love the depth and interconnectedness of religious mythologies. I would love to hear more about what you think on the matter. 🇮🇸

No, I think you are mixed up with another legend. This comes directly from "The Marriage of Njord and Skadi". While I was incorrect about specifically amusing the gods, it was in fact the gods who were all tasked with making the giantess Skadi laugh. They all failed, and then Loki tied his nuts to a goat with a rope, and played tug-of-war with it, which finally succeeded.
@Zeph_Moon

Mcchuggernaut in the version I read (there are several after all) that happened because Skadi demanded him to be punished for his involvement in her fathers death and Odin thought that that particular punishment would be funny.

And she did nothing to deserve such misery... except marry Loki. @@rosalinacv1996 how is that funny? they are misunderstood and unfairly an poorly treated. They bound him to a fucking rock with the body of his own son while snake drips venom onto them causing them to be in complete agony which agony is a complete understatement however at the moment I cannot think of a word to describe such anguish, plus mental anguish. Think of poor sigyn too. Odin was the fucking asshole who locked Fenrir up bcuz he knew Fenrir was going to fucking be his undoing and was so scared of his massive size that they decide to chain the poor babe up. Loki is the reason the gods have all their stuff. The reason they got out of a lot of issues. The reason they have a wall around Asgard. Odin goes out of his way to hurt lokis children because they are involved in ragnarok and the end of the gods or whatever and locks them away, yet calls Loki his fucking “ blood brother” yet fucking betrays them. So yes Loki is fucking misunderstood.I’m sick of seei this bullshit satanic type filter on Loki who is actually a very loving, inclusive caring and fiercely protective deity,god, parent and friend to those who seek to truly know Loki. Fuck all of you who hate on this deity. Who choose to view him as only truly evil. If y view them like that then that’s what they’ll be to you, but they are misunderstood and hurt and tortured yet loving chaotic loyal,caring,charming,perfect even with “ flaws” , protective, fun, truthful, supportive . A bringer of change.

Just going by what I remember here, too lazy to look it up:) but i believe Balders death was not what made the other Gods turn on Loki, it was the feast where he killed a servant and the following insults he made against the other Gods, including Odin. I recall mention that this whole thing with Baldur took place "at the dawn of time" , and is already ancient history when Loki gets his punishment. Correct me if I'm wrong:)
