This one is certainly not regarded as one of Lovecraft's best, even by Lovecraft himself, partly due to being written as a serial, which is why there's a bit of a recap at the start of each chapter. Still, it's a bit of a classic that I think people will get a kick out of.
@michaelandreipalon3595 ай бұрын
But it sure ain't one of his surprising worst, all things considered. Plus, it did spawn a real good 1985 movie featuring Jeffrey Combs, well known as the Question in Justice League Unlimited.

I love the story, especially the character of Herbert West and the intellectual friendship between him and the narrator. I also like how West isn't a stereotypical mad scientist outwardly and it seems realistic to me that he'd begin by justifying his obsession as the desire to cure death, but lost interest and sight of that as his pursuit was selfish all along. That he can't stop himself from doing what he's obsessed with just for the sake of doing it seems like how some real brilliant scientists behave, and behaved when creating regrettably horrible inventions. Use or misuse being an afterthought.

That so? I always took as the expose on Euro racism of the time. The explicit us of "retarded" exposes the writting as a product of its time. It would have felt weird otherwise Even Verne has some racism here and there, mostly against african, yet sometimes its from european to european. The tale of 3 russies and 3 englishman show much so.
@gameboysp1005 ай бұрын
@@ericquiabazza2608 I am no expert on Euro-racism but I have never read any book from that time period that described an African American man quite so much like a gorilla. Followed by the black man eating a baby after being reanimated. The only time I had read similar things was in old pulp stories where explorers would meet Neolithic throwbacks in “blackest Africa.”
