37 Ongoing Book Series - Who makes the cut? (DNF, Maybe Later, or Priority)
#books #booktube #fantasybooks
I have around 37 ongoing series on my TBR right now and that is far too many. I will be deciding which of these 37 ongoing book series get DNF, Maybe latered, or continued in 2023. I will not be including universe type series like Dying Earth, Discworld or Culture series. I also am not including series that are waiting on their next entry that I've read all published works for like Brandon Sanderson Stormlight Archive. Let's see who makes the cut shall we?

Yup, everyone kind of goes through that arc in their reading history. Start out reading and never DNFing, to reading the first in a series and DNFing from there....to reading half the first book in a series and DNFing from there....some people take that even further, only giving books 50-100 pages and DNFing, but to me that's crazy....soooooooo many great books/series are slow starts and end up being amazing.

And that is hands down the best first published trilogy I've ever read, other than maybe mistborn Era one, but seeing as brandon wrote it all at once, and I don't believe brian did, it's close. Shadows of Self is much better than Alloy of Law (Mistborn Era 2). But they're all very different from the original Mistborn trilogy. Definitely nothing that's super pressing to read, unless you're trying to connect all of the Cosmere dots (in which case the last book in Era 2 is massively important). I'm hyped to see how Sanderson's transition to science fantasy goes with the next era of Mistborn.

Ooh... tough Jimmy is in the house 😂 I did get to the end of WOT via audiobook but thb it never gets any better. So I think you're right to abandon it if you're already bored. I just completed the 4 Hyperion novels and really enjoyed them all, so I think you should at least try Fall of Hyperion. I'm not in the middle of many series as several years ago I decided to only read completed series and I've largely stuck to that. I am in middle of The Expanse but that's a 1 book a month or so read and series is completed. I also have the 2nd Children of Time book queued up and there's a couple of duologies I need to finish. Still enough to keep me entertained for a few months even if I don't get distracted by the bright shiny and new. Don't ask me about the list of series I want to start though - that's huge 😱

I would have DNFed WoT but for the fact that Brandon Sanderson wrote the last three books. I pushed through because I wanted to see how the writing style changed. I found that his prose is not quite as lush as Jordan's, but there was an immediate, 100% improvement in the pacing. Was it worth it? Eh... it's a longer and more thorough version of Tolkein, but bigger doesn't always equal better.

Wheel of Time: sad to hear about the DNF, but I can't be mad at it. My opinion is that the further and further away we get from original publishing DNF will be more prevalent. I love these books, but I understand. Red Rising: YES!! Expanse: YES!! Senlin/Books of Babel: I get the sense that Allen will use the "It's a me problem" bordering on ad ad nauseam. going to be in the minority but will agree with Raf Blutaxt that book 6 imho might be the worst one. the thing at the end everyone talks about is very cool and some of Jordan's best writing but it's 10 pages after about a literal 1,000. Honestly his pacing felt like an issue as early as Dragon Rising (which I actually like a lot) but starting with book 5 it feels like a lot of parts just exist to reintroduce or placehold characters who have nothing to do until the next book or even two.

Hi. The Wheel of Time, I read the first three books in the early 90’s and the Eye of the World was the best of them. The Shadow Rising was next but after 100 pages I put it down; not really my thing. Fast forward to January last year and after reading how much of an influence WoT was on contemporary writers I decided to have another shot at the series from book 1, nine months later I finished it. Worth reading but from book 5 to book 11 is a real slog, there are highlights but they are few and far between. The last three books are much better in terms of pacing and the conclusion is reasonable if not entirely satisfying. I’m glad I read it but in my opinion it’s not the greatest series I have read. I had a similar reaction to The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Staveley but I have decided to attempt to complete the series this year. There are other series I’ve yet to complete, Justin Cronin’s The Passage series with just City Of Mirrors left to read. I do have to agree with you on the more general point in that if a series is not satisfying for whatever reason it’s better to shelve it and move on. Great video!

I just have a hard time imagining myself picking up WoT. Like there's so much baggage to it for some reason. I'm in the middle of The Spider and am enjoying it. Each chapter has an interesting scene, things are happening. My biggest complaint with the series is that there's not a whole lot of meat to it. Stuff is happening, but I've seen battles and scheming so many times before. Fall of Hyperion is worth reading, and I didn't LOVE Hyperion. The end does some really interesting things tying in some cool worldbuilding. There's just some slow chapters here and there.

YES!!! Thank you. WoT Book 4 was awful, awful, awful. It was where the Jaws theme started playing for me back in 2000. I (stupidly) persisted until part way through Book 6, and it just got worse. I was so deeply impacted by the horror that is WoT, I couldn't read fantasy for about 4 or 5 years afterwards - keep in mind I started reading fantasy back in 1979, so that's how deeply WoT screwed me over.

The immediate sequel to Ender's Game is Speaker For the Dead, which is a very different sort of story and quite good (caveat: I'm going by decades-old memory here; but it did win the Hugo and Nebula awards). I would recommend giving it a try, but you can feel free to DNF the series after that if you want.

I had a year of DNF 50+ books back in 2019. Maybe just bad picks on my end but who knows. Now I do the 100 rule. I take 100 minus my current age and give the book that many pages to sink me. I only really feel comfortable giving my opinions about this video on series I’ve actually read so the only two are Dresden Files and MBE2. For Dresden if you are going into Proven Guilty and Dead Beat (book 7 the one before PG) didn’t really fire you up to really sink your teeth into this series I’m not sure anything else will. Dead Beat is consistently considered one of the top 3ish books in the series with Changes (book 12) and any of the books divisible by 5 which feature the Denarians. 5-Death Masks, 10-Small Favor, and 15-Skin Game. Honestly for the best Dresden experience it would probably be best to set Dresden to the side for awhile and focus on your Priority List for a bit until you can do a reset from book 3 of Dresden titled Grave Peril and then really focus on them one after another. Doing them on Audio is absolutely the way to go though James Marsters does them and he’s phenomenal. Really immerse yourself in Harry and his world for the best experience. Just remember when you are reading you are in 1st person 100% of the time. Sometimes people forget that and judge him unfairly based on personal thoughts that they would never know about if they were a character in this world instead of having a Doyalist perspective. For Mistborn Era 2… man you just read Alloy? I really enjoyed MBE2 and I have to admit Alloy is the weakest of the 4. Depending on how big of a Cosmere fan you are Lost Metal (which just came out) will either be the best of the series or just right around where Alloy is. The other two though, book 2 Shadows of Self and book 3 The Bands of Mourning are both up there with MBE1 and Stormlight for me. Epic Action, Epic Stakes, great Characters and Arcs for each of them (except Wayne he gets his major focus in Lost Metal). Those two books have it all. I would recommend Shadows of Self through Lost Metal very very much. Also small tidbit here so happy about your WoT DNF. It is one of 2 series in this world I refuse to touch on principle since if the genders were swapped and men “quieted” women because their Magic made them crazy WoT would have never made it to print but since it was affecting Men it’s absolutely ok. No… Just no…

@@thefantasynuttwork Jimmy you did read Dead Beat and gave it 4 stars. It's the one that ends with the zombie T-Rex, the necromancy on Halloween, etc. Though yeah if that one didn't grab you I don't know. Proven Guilty I had some issues with (feels a little long maybe) but also did do some things with the over-arching plot that I loved. Also if you're a horror fan it will be a blast as it's set at sort of Comic Con fan convention in Chicago.

Hyperion - Book 1 is great, it's downhill from there. Raf Blutaxt takedown of the series on his channel is way more entertaining than the rest of these books. Ender - I wasn't blown away by book 1. BUT the second book, Speaker for the Dead, is WAY better imho and has a completely different tone. It's not on my top five of all time sci-fi list, but top 20 for sure. Haven't read anything beyond that though. Dresden - I laughed out loud at the sunken cost thing. I've been there! Finally DNFd it after the snoozefest that was peace talks / battle ground.

Hi there. How are you doing? I can understand how you feel about the Tower of Babel series. That was a hard DNF for me too. After I listened to the first chapter I never thought of the characters again and by the time I got back to it, I had forgotten about everything. The same thing happened with Guy Gavriel Kay, he was yuck. Also, I tried twice to listen to the last Wish of the Witcher and I found the author to be really disgusting towards women. I also fell asleep during 2 of the stories. I have read so many translated works like a light novel series and lots of manga that were so much better than him. My favorite light novel series right now is called A Certain Magical Index which has unforgettable characters and mixes science and magic really well.

@@thefantasynuttwork Cool. You should. It takes place in Academy City where 80 percent of the population is made up of students who are developing their psychic abilities. That Railgun series takes place in the same city, but with a science focus, whereas the Index light novel is in the same city but with a concentration of magical abilities. In the middle of that walks a boy named Touma Kamijou who has no psychic ability, but has a power of his own. It's called the Imagine Breaker. When he touches any magic or psychic ability with his right hand he can cancel it out. So, it basically takes you through his adventures with a large cast of characters.

I've always liked Wheel of Time (the books, definitely not the show) for what it is, but I completely understand not finishing it. That's a huge time commitment for something you don't enjoy. I would DNF it as well. When I re-read that series I skip huge sections and one entire book. I'm happy to hear you're probably going to finish the Hyperion Cantos. I thought book 2 was awesome and I'm one of the rare people that loves book 3 and thinks book 4 was okay, if not great. It's good to hear that you might finish Dune. I love all six books, especially 4-6. Definitely not a popular opinion though. It will be interesting to one day hear your thoughts on them, as they were obviously huge source of inspiration for Bakker, and I know we both share a love for The Second Apocalypse.
