A new series of videos for those that are new to fly tying, to accompany my new book, 'fly tying for beginners' out later this year. Here I am showing techniques that may look challenging, but are totally achievable with a little patience and practice. I have slowed down the tying and explain every step in detail. If you are struggling, and have a question, post it in the comments box below, and I will try and help. Good luck!

Even these "beginner flies" are great.....even after all my years of trying what I needed to fish the holy waters of Michigan......watching Barry tie so many different flies that I just never used or needed is as relaxing as sipping hot coffee watching the morning mist rise from the Au Sable or any of the many trout waters in the northern mitten. Best Wishes Barry! 🤠

I think this was the first pattern I ever tied that caught fish for me. Now it's a staple in my fly box. Isn't it cool how well it wraps itself around your hook shank, looking so natural! The ingredients are so simple yet my lizard brain had to continually remind me to just keep it simple. Otherwise it wanted me to make it far more complicated. This pattern and the Hare's ears nymph adds pretty much all you need for nymphs!

I love this method for the extra bacon on the wing casing. Trying to do this with on a #14 beadhead but am having trouble finding good proportions between body and thorax. My casing always ends up too small or too big. Practice practice.

If it always ends up too large or too small, use the two flies as a guide and make your wing case larger than the small one but not as large as the big one... Good luck.

I do love the classics. I like to attempt some of the fancier patterns for fun but if I had to choose one fly only it would probably be a pheasant tail. Thank you for another one dude. ps...... with my being behind because of the hospital scenario I seriously doubt that I’ll ever catch up. The list is VERY long! lol

Great instructional video and I have the book as well. However I would say that as a beginner fly tyer I found this pattern quite complex and difficult and has taken me many attempts to get anywhere near what it should look like. I have found other patterns a little easier but rest assured I won’t be giving up on this one just yet
@Thefeatherbender

Hi, please concentrate on proportions and technique, once you have mastered these for this pattern others will prove easier also. Good luck.

Nice looking nymph, personally on the PTN, I tie the tail a bit shorter,With fine enough wire, it is easy to tie as per Swayer and twist the copper with the Pheasant tail. I think he never tied in legs - Baetis holds the legs against the body when swimming? I guess the peacock for the thorax is popular but I've found it can make the thorax look a bit chunky.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, Thanks. Thats correct, the original never had legs or tying thread. Here I am not trying to copy Sawyers nymph, but teach those that are new to fly tying the basic skills and how to master them with hope that they will master the craft and stick with it.

Hi Barry, I'm Alex from Italy, I recently started nymph fishing and tying nymphs; I wanted to ask why this beautiful nymph you built doesn't have a tungsten bead and turns of lead to weigh it down? I suppose that to fish with this nymph you need to put another one under that with the tungsten head, right? Thanks, Alex.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 10 ай бұрын
Ciao Alex, Nymphs can be found in all water depths from the river bed right up to the surface. Although I have used no additional weight on this pattern, it will still sink, but slowly. This is very useful for imitating nymphs that are about to emerge and are taken by feeding fish just under the surface. If you would like it to be heavier and fish deeper quicker, add more weight! Good luck.

Can I ask why you spin the tying thread?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 2 ай бұрын
Spinning your thread anti-clockwise gives it a flat profile and spinning it clockwise gives it a round profile. Watch the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnnQlYZ6rb12a6s

Hi Jeremy, take a deep breath ...and relax... It all has to do with proportions, get these marked out on the hook shank from the get-go and your problems will be over! When you start attaching your thread to the hook shank, do so at the exact point where the abdomen meets the thorax. Normally approximately 1/3 hook shank length from the hook eye. Start your thread here and and never go past this when tying in the tail, abdomen, and rib. If using pheasant tail for the wing case, split the material into three bunches. By the butt ends (NOT THE TIPS) tie one in at a central position that goes back over the abdomen then the remaining two at 45 degrees on each side of the first. finish tying the thorax taking care to leave enough space between the hook eye and the thorax to finish the fly and head!!! Wax your tying thread with fly tyers wax, this will stop the pheasant tail from slipping at the head of the fly. Take the last 45 degree section of wing case and pull this over the thorax, take care that ALL the fibres are parallel and not crossing over each other!! Once you have the fibres straight tie down the bunch making sure that it's as small as possible where you tie it in about 3 mm behind the hook eye, with only 2 or 3 wraps of thread, the wax will hold everything in position. Follow this with the second 45 degree bunch and then the remaining central bunch, taking care that ALL the fibers are straight each time. If you follow these instructions correctly there will be enough room left to form a nice neat little head with a perfect wing case! Let me know how you get on. Good luck!
