Very nice tie. I will have to practice getting the tail and wing to slope so nicely to allow for a thread body. You make tying yearling elk, and deer hair look so easy. I struggle with it, possibly because I tie all my deer hair patterns at once so I won't be cleaning hair up forever. So by the time I have tied all the deer and such type hair flies I want, I get good. Then I don't tie them again until I need them again. I suppose if I want to improve I need to tie more hair flies throughout the season. Then I might get consistent with hair flies. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

Hi Sean, thanks. Yeah it's only practice and paying attention to detail and proportions. I have a publisher for my ' Ultimate guide to tying with deer hair' book, so I hope I can finish it next year for publishing in 2020.

Tied some of these last winter but I don't fly fish. Used them in a normal rod/reel with a bobber last week in Central Idaho and caught boat loads of trout. They truly work indeed.

If you were dubbing a larger fly, what do you use? As usual, an excellent presentation. I really enjoy your instructions. You take the time to do it so perfect, you’re a great inspiration.
@Thefeatherbender3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly, You can use just more of the same! There are so many different dubbing available, that you have loads of choices. But just make sure that you get the correct dubbing for the right job. There is a lot of dubbing for nymphs and wet flies that absorbs water, you want to avoid this for dry flies.

Im off to buy some hackle and give this a go!! Do you ever use a white moth? Its my fav for dusk dry fly fishing and is rarely unsuccessful. Would love to see how you would tie one 👍

Yes I have, but its been some time. I'll see if I can dig out that old patterns. If I remember correctly I have used two, one with white foam.

Very Well done!! I've got to tie some of those, maybe in a few different colors. Do you think a Bluegill will hit that Fly?? Thanks for Sharing.

Thanks Mike, I am sure that Bluegill will love grey Wulff's.

Beautiful Job Barry! I was curious did you strip half the hackle off the feather? It applied so smoothly. Best.
@Thefeatherbender4 жыл бұрын
Thanks John, yes I do on some patterns, depending on what I am tying and how I want the finished hackle to look.

Hi - quick question on the hackle colour. I need to order something in, and given this is mid C-19 lockdown, can't pop into a shop to see it in person. Are there any specific brands / colours that you could recommend that offer a close representation? I always find photos tricky to judge from.
@Thefeatherbender4 жыл бұрын
Hi Edward, I always discourage ordering hackle online, but in these strange times we have little choice. I can however recommend a good friend in the US who has one of the largest stocks of hackle to be found. If when you place your order let him know exactly what you are after, cape or saddle, colour and what you are using it for and hook size range. Jim will do his utmost to sort you out what you need. jimsflyco.co good luck.

Great job as usual Barry. One question, for those like me that might get lost in the shades of your language: what's the difference between "Elk" and "Deer" (an possibly "Moose", "Roe Deer" etc. ?). I thought that Elk is British for Moose (American) and that Deer is British for Elk but I'm afraid I eventually lost my way :D .
@Thefeatherbender4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andreas, it's easy to loose your way. What is know and sold as elk (US) is really (Wapiti) the worlds second largest deer next to the moose. Although in Europe they call moose incorrectly elk. The hair from the elk is coarser and muck longer than regular deer hair. If you go to my web site you will find much more detailed info on all deer hair types and uses. thefeatherbender.com/2020/08/23/the-ultimate-guide-to-deer-hair-part-1/

benbender thanks Barry, i skipped your article, it looks very detailed and clarifying. I eventually realized there's much more than "deer hair" in the world that needs to be understood and learned. An hunter's standpoint will definitely help. So long, ciao
