This is a great little technique for making very realistic cranefly / Daddy long legs bodies. For just a few Euro you can get one of these simple extended body tools (link below) and with the material from just one vinyl glove make hundreds of bodies. It takes a little practice, but once mastered you will be churning them out. When made correctly, they are filled with air and float like a cork.

Thanks for sharing this pattern! I was excited to try tying one of these but didn't want to have to wait for a tool to arrive in the mail. I remembered I have a box of flat toothpicks, took one and cut a slit one end with an X-acto blade. My biggest concern was the finished body wouldn't slide off the toothpick but I had to problem. It fits in my vise after snipping off an eighth inch from the tapered end making it easy to work with. This also helps with heating the body up with the flame. My vise spins so it's like a rotisserie
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mickey, thanks. The tool has a special finish on the surface of the needle, this makes removing the finished body easy. You can try applying a tiny amount of Vaseline to the tip of your toothpick before you wrap the body strip, this also makes it easier on the tool.

@@Thefeatherbender Barry, it's the slightly peculiar-looking version tied by (and for) Alastair Robjent, that he sells in his Stockbridge shop. It's a noted killer, and he sells hundreds. I'll get a photograph of it to you via the SIG. Of course, it's either a noted killer because it's brilliant, or because he sells so many that it's the daddy so many anglers have in their boxes. It floats with the legs UNDER the body in the surface film.

Berry, I am always impressed with your care to making it look real with available materials. Fragility would be my only concern here similarly with the wally wings your so good at. Some flys don't look so realistic in detail but are very durable, and catch fish again and again. I fished all evening with a stimulator pattern catching dozens of fish (released), and the fly kept on ticking. But, I really am going to give these a shot and let you know if my fears are correct. Thanks for all you show.. Danny

Hi Danny, I know what you mean, but these bodies are almost indestructible if made correctly and will outlive the hook. Please do let me know how you get on with them.
