I have two kids in high school and I have tried my best to instill in them to do whatever it takes to put distance between them and any type of violent scenario playing out at school. They are taught to listen to the teachers but the teachers don’t know shit they think it’s goofy but I go over with them every couple weeks about the things you are saying as far as observe, make a decision and then act. I tell them to be concerned with only themselves (that may be selfish but I have my children that I want to come back home) if anything ever happens I’m hoping during the stress that they remember our conversations and scenario run-throughs . Thank you for your time on making the video and I will have my kids watch it today

@Apex Predator As a parent of a school age child, I understand your message and I agree with you for the most part. However the one line I have an issue with is “the teachers don’t know shit they think it’s goofy.” I have worked in two different school districts and I have never met a teacher who doesn’t take the shooter threat seriously. Kids are taught to fight back and/or get the hell out. We discuss it and train it. Like most teachers, I love my students and put their safety first. In every school mass shooting I can think of, a teacher was shot and/or killed confronting the shooter to give students a chance to get out. It’s tough for one teacher to have the responsibility to protect 25-30 kids from somebody with a gun when you are armed with books and pencils, but unfortunately that is just another part of the job description these days. Give the teachers some credit. Like I said though, I understand where your coming from as a parent. YOUR kids are YOUR priority. I have peace of mind in knowing that the teachers in my kid’s building put the kids first.

Apex Predator well I do agree with you and school teachers may care but you’re right THEY DONT KNOW SHIT, most can’t handle even a little stress much less an active shooter. I do NOT automatically put out teachers up on some bullshit pedestal because most of them are lazy, over weight and constantly bitch that they’re underpaid when they knew full well the pay scale before they assumed massive debt in collage loans. Now having said all that the thing I really wanted to tell ya is that teaching your kids to put themselves first in this one situation isn’t selfish in my book because it’s a huge task that most adults can’t even cope with. Teaching your kids to keep themselves safe is quite enough responsibility for them so don’t feel bad for teaching them that. In my opinion you sound like a great parent. Self reliance is a thousand times more valuable than teaching them to fallow the idiot school teacher and allowing them to do all the thinking. That is exactly what gets sheeple killed!

Great video Mike, My wife is a teacher and 12 years ago before locked schools an armed robbery suspect ran right through the school. Worried about my kids school I met with the Principal and asked why the front doors were open to the public. I reviewed what happened with my wifes school district and asked if they would update policy and lock the doors. I was told I was a paranoid individual and that would never happen because they were a welcoming community. There policy at the time was essentially go into lockdown after the threat was in the building. I was speechless and brought it to the Board. Same reply and I was openly laughed at by everyone. I live in CT and 2 months later Sandy Hook occurred and then everyone pretended they were on top of these issues. Fast forward a few years and key cards, intercoms, camera's and buzz in procedures were put in place and we were told everything was secure including roaming security inside the building. I had to drop off something one day for my son and the doors were all unlocked because the secretaries were tired of buzzing people in. I walked right into the school dropped my package and on the way out the retired LEO monitoring the camera came running down the hall trying not to spill his coffee. I said little late aren't you bud and walked out. Things have changed for the better but I was stunned at the sheer lack of awareness before an incident occurred and then even after. Even now people truly believe it can never occur in there building or School . I appreciate your experience and candor on these topics as it relates to awareness in a variety of situations and hopefully because of your experience people will take it seriously.

Things change a bit when your workplace is an elementary school in the state of California and it becomes an actual felony to carry at work or even have a gun in locked in your car. There are some things I don't play with. That is why you train in other ways and buy the door locks that the schools refuse to buy that will keep a bad buy out and buy you time. There ARE some situations where you will not have a gun. There are places where you will not be able to carry. It is important to never become so reliant on a firearm that you fail to plan and prepare for the chance that you will not have one. Just my humble opinion. Thank you for sharing. It definitely gave me a lot to think about.

FYI... most electronic lock systems by code have to be tied into the fire alarm system. Pull the fire alarm and many locks will disengage to allow free movement. Any common area doors should have this unless it’s a high security area. Won’t help for certain rooms but it will free up some access to hallways etc.. all depends on the life safety plans for the building and egress paths but it would help in this kind of situation.

Thanks for explaining about a suppressor, such a clear explanation. I learned a lot. Your explanation about the mass shooting made a lot of sense. When we have had active shooter drills, I have stressed to the kids, be calm and quiet. . . . . you need to be able to think and take a moment to look, learn and smell. . . ...don't "run with the herd". ... ..the kids would aske a lot of questions. . . . I stressed to them that if the situation occurs, that we can't have a one set set of directions, we need to change what we do depending on what is happening. . .then we talked about different scenerios and possible options. ... .but being aware of what is happening is most important. .. ..your explanations made me feel pretty good about the conversations that I have had with the kids. . . . have you considered doing a set of videos geared toward teens? when it comes to safety and preparedness?

Thanks for the new acronyms, SEAL and OFF. I didn't catch what all the letters mean for See, ???, And Listen. I like the acronym for Observe, Flee, or Fight. Based on my 26 years in the martial arts and firearms as a civilian, I was trained the opposite of the typical emergency response: Fight, Hide, Run: Engage the enemy upon present and imminent danger, Hide in Counter-Ambush if necessary (not cower), and Run (either to break contact if the opportunity presents itself, or if no choice, then to improve my position to engage). For somebody who is trained and has the skill sets, the operating principle is to make the "hunter" become the "hunted", especially if help is not going to be there in time. I honestly believe embracing the violence is a better way for me to survive than to get shot in the back fleeing or cornered cowering. From a legal perspective, there is nothing to worry about in an active shooter situation, other than accidentally missing and shooting somebody else, with all the chaos in the foreground or over penetration in the background. But sometimes, the only backstop is the bad guy... You make a lot of great points, especially the part about pausing to observe what's going on around you, collect data, and to make a deliberate decision. Combat breathing deeply also helps. I enjoy listening to and watching your lengthy videos, but I definitely need to set aside enough time for them. Thanks for sharing your insights. It's time well worth spent.

I was tasked with teaching staff at my place of work how to react to a mass shooting. I was required to teach the federal guidelines of "Run hide fight". Being a retired Marine grunt, when I was done teaching I would ask my students if they now felt safer having heard that class. I usually got the polite 50% that would answer in the affirmative. I then launched into my portion of the class. In a similar fashion to you I used the OODA loop as a guideline for decision making, taught about weapons of opportunity, stressed common sense reactions (TTPs), told them to "fight smartly", never hide without the opportunity to fight back, used scenario based training, and urged them that if fighting; to get mean. In the end I think it went well & hopefully they NEVER need it.

I teach the Texas State University's civilian response to active shooter (CRAS). It's called Avoid, Deny, Defend. The concept being that the "hide" portion of "run, hide, fight" has one relying on hope for survival, which isn't much of a strategy. You should check it out as there's a lot of great material that comes with the instructor cert. 👍👍👍

I have no training, no back round ,John Q Public! I was 16, no cell phones, 6 mi away from the car on a hike along the river with my dad. (that we did all the time)! we hear gun fire, not uncommon where we are at. But the bees flying over my shoulder! BB gun and bottle rockets! all i had ,im pissed. I saw where rounds were comming from. so i counted and waited for reload to get to safety. im 43 now and wish i could take your courses. thank you.

jrcbfun How did you know how many rounds was time for a reload? I would want to do that, but unless you can see them up close how can you know if it’s a revolver, which can be 6-8 rounds (unless it’s a .22) or a semi-auto which can be up to 20. If you can’t see them at all it could be a rifle with anything up to 30 typically or even one of those 100rd drums. Just curious.

tridoc99 I think it was a deer rifle, they would shoot seven or so then a five minute pause... then start again. The pause between each shot was like a bolt action. This went on for 45 min. They had optics cause when we moved the rounds followed. We were targets! It was a lucky guess on what they were using, but we had to move.

Man this is a daily concern with me at work. I’m an ex-LEO from the mid 90s (I was in my mid 20s) and I have remained trained on my own but I went into Telecommunications. Now I am the Telecom Engineer for my local Gov. The 4 story building I work in contains the Tax collections Office, County MGR’s Office among other Dept’s. Our new County MGR on the 3rd floor has spent a shit-ton of money on door strike/mag-locks and cameras but she has buttoned the building up so tight that I think it would be a huge struggle for a first responder to access. I also have a background in Security both electric and human and I have come up with a lot of personal policies for just me. Example my office is in the basement (no windows). If I take the elevator to the 1st floor (where the tax counter is) to exit the building the elevator doors would automatically open right where a potential threat could and likely be and there would be no way to shut the doors fast if something was going down. If you’ve ever hit the “door close” button on an elevator you know what I’m talking about. For this reason I ALWAYS take the stairs. I can peak thru the glass before entering this potential hot area. I’m not going to lie. I do worry about some crazy ass anti-Trump nut or liberal militant causing trouble but I mostly worry about co-workers going nuts. I think we should have at least one person (trusted employee) on each floor trained and carrying and ready to respond. What do you and anyone reading this think about that plan??? I’d like to give more detail but my phone is about to die. Thanks for any response I may get from anyone

This is very true! You will see this in teaching any skill. People will do as they are instructed to the point where you have to instruct them in things they should know to do. Because they give themselves over to the instructor to do the thinking for them. They become engrossed in the obedience of the thing vs the active learning process. I believe that’s why you have to take what you learn and train it on your own until you own the skill by teaching yourself after you’ve gotten instruction. Be it boat handling or driving or what ever

Circled back to this. My grandson was explaining to me what happens when his school goes into " lockdown". Teachers herd kids into classrooms in a fashion that puts the kids in least line of site to a shooter. I thought about that for a few days. I worked construction for most of my life. I had worked on dozens of middle schools, high schools and elementary schools as well.

This is cool man, and good content. Solid information. The "run hide" paradigm definitely sets people up to coral themselves into good spots to be slaughtered by an attacker who knows the terrain, has a force advantage, and has little or no inhibitions for erratic and aggressive violence. Constructive recommendation though... next time, take five minutes and script out some bullet points what you're going to say. Like in a morning stand-up brief with your E-8 or E-9. Multiple times you mixed up words (saying buildings instead of rooms, "the chamber exploding" vs the powder deflagrating ie burning, bullet creating a "muzzle flash" vs the uncorking overpressure, etc) and the point of the discussion gets lost when the audience is figuring that out in their head while you are moving on. Also, unless they've been in/around an SF units, nobody knows what Free Flow means, and oh by the way the details are (last I checked) still classified. Nor do State police (or even most SWAT units, if any) employ Flow, they simply don't have the resources or time to become proficient - perhaps you know otherwise from the training you've conducted. But from what I've seen/heard across the industry they use traditional stacks and movement TTPs. Considering this was at at municipal building, you can make an educated guess as to the level of training the security personnel had (and the likely mix of contractor and police). And for what it's worth... a single shot subsonic 22 with a wiped suppressor is so quiet you can hear the firing pin drop. Hush .45ACP and a Sig BigBore can reports like a hand clap in a semi auto (imagine adding a wet can and wipes to that, on a revolver in .45LC). So to make statements that "suppressors don't make the gun quiet, the media is wrong!" isn't totally true, because they certainly can be made very, very quiet. Hope it helps, solid channel.
